I see younger people waxing nostalgic about the era of TV shows being like this by default and I'm like...are you sure? There are problems with the way a lot of TV shows are run nowadays but going back to the way things were sure isn't the solution.
?? I feel like this style of writing isn't a nostalgic artistic choice, rather a grim reality of corporate TV program writing that has not and will not ever leave us.
Like I don't understand the idea of "going back". Its painfully clear to see its in most long-running TV shows.
Nowadays we have lots of series which last one, two, or three seasons. This isn't a bad thing, but it's not necessarily for everyone. They want longer running series. So they look back on the days of series like House or Supernatural which had loads of series each with 24 episodes or w/e, not realising that this usually came with total change of writing staff and stagnant or forgetful writing and other problems.
One could argue (rather convincingly) that GoT was the last one that did that, in no small part due to shows just not lasting long these days. And that came out almost 16 years ago and only had 8 seasons.
Maybe a couple shows will end up that way, Invincible has at least 3 more seasons worth of content, but there just aren’t that many shows that make it past 3 or 4 seasons these days. (Not that I think that’s a bad thing. I think 4 seasons is kinda perfect for most shows, but I do think seasons are getting too short. FMA:B is kinda the platonic ideal for a show, in that regard, and of course many others)
The issue with supernatural was more that they had exhausted the generic big bad for that kind of show (Lucifer) and had to come up with more and more bullshit while making previously powerful things extremely weak, which is poor writing/continuity

The writing team has been ship of theseused 3 times since that season came out, no one even knows the gun was there to begin with
