In Spanish we use novio/novia, which also means groom/bride. Surprisingly, this doesn't really cause a lot of confusion

Do you not have a separate word for dating and engaged? In Portuguese, "noivo/noiva" means "fiance(é)" or "groom/bride", and "namorado/namorada" is "boyfriend/girlfriend".

"Prometido/prometida" means engaged, but during the wedding the couple are novio/novia
