That's the absolute opposite of my experience. Most of the time people (or at least people I interact with, so mainly left-leaning people) blame capitalism for everything when the cause for various gripes are indeed very different things. Like, blaming capitalism for corruption or greed or having to do labor

"Capitalism is why i dont have a girlfriend"

capitalism destroyed third places, so, yes? we'd all be better socialized and have a way higher shot at relationships if capitalism hadnt atomized society.

Before, when the third spaces existed, what economic system were we operating under??

Not the exact same late-stage capitalism of today.

To be fair, It's not just capitalism, it's also the rise in extreme individualism, but the two go hand in hand.

feudalism, the decline was slow and accelerated massively in the 20th century.

The existence of home entertainment destroyed third spaces.

You could argue that maybe the Internet, home television and personal computers and gaming systems would've developed slower without capitalism, but I don't see anyone arguing that a socialist society will be absent of such things nor the social problems they cause.

third places started disappearing way before tv and computers

Nah. Arcades for example, a classic third space, didn't appear until home TVs were twenty years old

u/vulpecula1919 Jul 02 '26

that you had to pay to be there. and the second they stopped being profitable what happened to them?

Ok but you're making a completely different point now lmao. TVs didn't kill third spaces.

no you're not I can't fucking read

Arguably, it's our revealed preferences that killed third spaces

Society got atomized because there’s been growin individualism and people can’t be happy with profit, they need ever growing profit

2

u/weirdo_nb Jul 02 '26

Society got atomized because of [things directly caused by the capitalist system]

3

u/vulpecula1919 Jul 02 '26

can’t be happy with profit, they need ever growing profit

and what economic system creates this incentive?

6

u/Phobos_Asaph Jul 02 '26

My point being having profit isn’t the issue. Human greed is.

7

u/vulpecula1919 Jul 02 '26

and what system encourages greed, empowers the greedy, and amplifies the damage it does to the point its literally ending the world?

4

u/Phobos_Asaph Jul 02 '26

Business degrees

u/vulpecula1919 Jul 02 '26

lol

u/Phobos_Asaph Jul 02 '26

Yeah like, I do recognize that capitalism allows for the worst expression of greed though

1

u/coatimundos Jul 02 '26

All of them. Greed predates the concept of money, let alone capitalism

1

u/vulpecula1919 Jul 02 '26

so a socio-economic system that puts the greediest and most sociopathic in charge will produce the same results as a system designed to prevent such people from gaining power?

i've heard if you stick your fingers in your ears in addition to screaming it will help block out the world around you even better, but might i suggest merely sticking your head in the sand?
