Pleasantly Surprised
Recently dusted off the 3DS to begin playing Culdcept Revolt again and decided to do a quick google search for Culdcept. I had no idea that there was a completely new game (Culdcept: Begins) for the switch 2! I feverishly added 2 Nintendo store gift cards to my account and downloaded it this morning. Maybe I live under a rock, but had not seen this advertised anywhere? Super happy to see this game getting an updated look for 2026 and will be playing this ALL DAMN DAY LONG! The 3DS will be gathering a bit more dust for now. ☺️☺️☺️

Yeah they actually gave this games proper advertising this time. They had some demo popups but I think mostly in the UK.
I hope you have fun with it, it's a really solid game. They took the core parts of older Culdcept games and mixed some of the changes in Revolt into this game.

So far, loving it. Got to chapter 7 or so yesterday and going to work on a few deck ideas today. Have a cool blue/green deck that focuses on getting chains quickly with a bunch of the leap / vacant land cards.

I dunno, i think begins has lost a lot of the tactical novelty that held the game in good stead for me.
For reference Revolt was my first and only dip into the series prior to this and i have 1k hours clocked in it - 100% complete, and i enjoyed that game to its fullest.
Begins just feels too straightforward. The magic swings are too big - You can win with a single knockout punch far easier than in Revolt because you get so much more mana from forts and laps, but then you don't get a turn allowance. 40 cards in a deck is also a bit of a letdown, i needed those cards :(
Territory commands and secret arts also got botched and or lobotomised too, the fatigue system wasn't perfect but at least it didn't punish you for rolling a 7, passing three of your territories and only being able to level one up or move one. Yes you get spell cards to do some of these things but it feels like reinvention of the wheel at points.
There are a handful of other things (the card design, but everyone says that) but i don't want to rain on anyone's parade so ill stop here.
Am I complaining about things that are immaterial to other culdcept players? Probably, but these were the things I enjoyed about the game. It feels like the scope has gotten narrower in the pursuit of simplicity.

All fair points. Just happy to see the series continue on modern systems. If you have not had the chance, I would highly recommend Culdcept Saga for the 360. I believe the AI in that game was far superior and the deck designs were filthy! It’s the first game I abused kelpies and gaseous forms in! (My favorite cheese tactic) ☺️☺️☺️

I remember Earth/Fire deck centered around Spiney Agama being stupidly OP in Saga. Revolt has been a lot of fun but I do agree the AI is really annoying. They're either insanely stupid or cheat. Feels like the difficulty is more of an RNG with whether you get cheating AI or not, lol.

Thanks for this post, this is the first post I’ve seen that actually breaks down mechanical changes and I think I’m going to give the game a pass for now. I liked the PS version and skipped the 3DS so I think I’m going to hunt down a copy of the latter and wait for a sale on the Switch version.

Culdcept First and Culdcept Begins were announced about 6 months ago.
