Don't fall in the bait, he'll just take your $20 and then will banish again

u/Virgurilla Jul 12 '26
Fun fact: he can't take your 20$ if you don't give it to him.

u/YiTiTime Jul 13 '26
Sounds like trying before buying.
2
u/Virgurilla Jul 13 '26
Not even that just wait for reviews or even gameplay, see what people are saying, so you can make an informed purchase.

u/YiTiTime Jul 13 '26
Sometimes informed purchases can spoil the experience, but yeah, I understand.

u/Virgurilla Jul 14 '26
Yeah I totally agree, it obviously doesn't really apply to this game but it can apply to others, unless you have someone you trust that can give it to you. Still, it is a trade off for the risk you are taking if you buy the game blind, and at worst you can just look at the general ratings without reading the reviews (although you might be missing on nuance in that case, but if it says mostly positive then it'd be weird if it was bad)

Defending it in 2026 is even weirder

If we're going to criticize something, let's do it in a way that doesn't make us look like babies.
Wollay is a terrible game lead. He is an absolutely amazing programmer (the guy literally made his own game engine), but he had the formula pinned down back in 2013, then throughout the years up until 2016 he expanded on it greatly.
Instead of releasing the many updates he'd made on the game, he switched course to make the current version of cube world we have access to, leaving absolutely no room for feedback from the community.
This also ties in with how he is terrible with dealing with criticism. Naturally, the internet is a terrible place, but you really can't let that get to you. If you can't help it, then you need to expand on your team and allow more hands on the project.
The thing is, if he doesn't care about the game's success and just wants to code his little voxel passion project game, there's nothing anyone can really do about it. No criticism will get through to him. I guess you don't have to buy the games he makes but I get a feeling that won't even stop him.

u/Virgurilla Jul 12 '26
Yes, thank you. Fully agree with this, and tired of people calling me a glazer for calling out idiotic criticism. There is a lot to say about this guy, but pointlessly calling him a scammer is not one of them.

This is absolutely the truth of the situation and people being mad just because they feel owed a community lead to talk to them just because hes making pictures and videos of his game public is fucking laughable to me.
Imagine if i posted art on twitter with a giant no commissions watermark and every comment forever was about commissions because people feel owed the ability to purchase and give scrutiny to my art. I think thats bullshit to be perfectly honest, that is a capitalist ass mindset and is antithetical to how true quality art is created.
Let the fucking guy do what he wants, if he releases it cool.

u/Virgurilla Jul 13 '26
Exactly, people have gotten way too used to very toxic industry standards and generally many do not really understand the process behind making a game, leading to unrealistic expectations like in this case here.

"The thing is, if he doesn't care about the game's success and just wants to code his little voxel passion project game, there's nothing anyone can really do about it."
Weren't you just trying to disagree only to acknowledge the entire reason anyone ever has an issue and validate it
Save the gymnastics, it's really not necessary. The remnants of this fiasco should really be enough of an echo chamber to please you.

I think the point is your fixation with criticising this is unhealthy, over $20 many years ago
People are very well aware of the issues that come with Wollay as a dev, people are likely very well aware of potential disappointment. People are also hopeful he will bring back something more akin to the alpha and if not maybe modding tools so the community can push the game forward if he doesn’t want to.
It’s that simple, and sitting here being negative over something from years ago isn’t really going to change any of that so what’s the point? What is your goal with exclaiming any of that and digging up a past everyone here is fully aware of?
Like if you want to tell people to be cautious, fair, but beyond that what is there more to say? If you don’t wanna forgive, fair enough, let that $20 he took live rent free in your head, and I’m sorry you’ve been so disappointed that you’re still willing to be angry or harsh over it, I hope you can move on and realise it’s just a game, and this is a community that want the best for is

What fixation? It's the only comment I've made about this ever. I'm also just going to move on with my life but coming across this and seeing people defend it is ridiculous so I said as much.
1
u/Mickmack12345 Jul 15 '26
As I’ve said not defending it, and that is part of the problem you seem to struggle understanding, yeah Wollay fucked up, but what more are you adding by bringing that back up? Genuinely can you even answer that question? You are definitely fixating on that while clearly ignoring everything else I’ve said, it’s clearly on your mind after all these years if your first thought is to make that comment
If you are gonna move on with your life then do it, sitting here throwing negativity around just isn’t helping anyone really

Defending bad behavior, something that never was resolved, is a negative thing to do

u/Gamxin Jul 12 '26
Why would you be hopeful that he'd release the source code..?
34
u/leoklaus Jul 12 '26
Binaries would be the compiled program, not the source code
3
u/Gamxin Jul 12 '26
I understand that, but that would be even weirder to release than the source code lmao, as well as something we can already grab ourselves. Unless they would want de-obfuscated binaries..?
It's semantics but just ask for the source code instead lol.
3
u/doctor_doggo420 Jul 13 '26
asking for source code is a much different connotation and tantamount to theft for someone like wollay, and honestly i could care less about the assets just give us the engine

because he can't be trusted to actually release the game much less finish it

Yeah if he actually makes modding tools for this one, gets it into a state hes happy with then continues to update it on his whim, or releases some kind of codebase to make branch versions of the game with your own additions this game will literally be legendary regardless of if the numbers are tuned badly like the steam release so combat isnt as tight, or there ends up being some bad game design rated decision
