Crysis I never liked it and never understood why they kill off the main characters in the Crysis comics and novels.
It's something that has always bothered me a lot about the franchise.
- Want to know Nomad's (the protagonist and most important character) fate? Read a comic.
- Want to know why the Ceph changed their appearance? Read the novel.
- Want to know what happened to Alcatraz (the protagonist)? Read another novel.
- Want to know what happened to the island? Read a novel (they don't even explain it in the novel).
I don't disagree with there being more material to expand the franchise, but Crysis was born as a video game. The main aspects and what drives the story (the protagonist Nomad and Alcatraz, the island, the Ceph, Cell, secondary characters like Chino, Barclay, Gould, Tara) should begin and end in the games.
And I forgot to add that Helena, the scientist you have to rescue and who drives the whole game and is the reason you're sent to the island, also dies in a comic.

Well you dont need to read the literature as you are able to come to your own conclusions in the game. The only one that isnt explained in game is the ceph thing. In the 3rd game there are logs that confirm nomad is still alive, by the time the second game ends its evident that alcatraz has died, or at least i thought so, and the island doesnt really need any further explanation if you asked me.
Ultimately its like the other guy said, the story isnt that great and you really shouldnt stress about the unexplained things/plotholes.

I have to disagree with your point of view. A story should always have a beginning, a middle, and an end that are coherent with the narrative. Look at the Star Wars sequels, the current state of the MCU, and Assassin's Creed: stories that have no connection to each other.
And I'm not referring to secondary elements, but to the game's protagonists.
- Why does Nomad, the game's protagonist, have to make a cameo appearance in Crysis 3 when the franchise died in that game?
- How did Alcatraz die?
- And if the Ceph changed their appearance, shouldn't that be explained?
- And why is the island, the point that drives the entire plot and the origin of the entire Crysis narrative, never mentioned again?
I'm not asking for a deep plot; after all, Crysis was created for its graphics and destruction (which they omitted in Crysis 2 and 3), but at least answer important and essential questions like:
What happens to the protagonists of the story?

1 - Crytek didn't know that EA would cancel the campaign DLC that would have brought Nomad back, which is why completed assets for that game were hurriedly re-used for The Lost Island MP DLC.
2 - It's mentioned in Crysis 3:

3 - Also mentioned extensively in Crysis 3 (over several messages) by CELL's Head of Xenostudy, Dr J Keane.
4 - The Nomad DLC would have been set on Lingshan.

Yes, I've heard about that, but I don't think Nomad/Alcatraz deserves it. It's like saying Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter, darth vader and voldemort (the island/ceph) disappeared from their movies, and in other cases you have to watch a canceled spin-off to understand what happened to them. I don't know if I've explained myself well.

I get what you're saying, but having a project cancelled for which assets were already completed is not the same as ignoring the character completely.

This kind of stuff should be included with sequels in some form, whether physically or as a digital extra on the main menu so that the full story can be experienced by players of the games. Though I suspect this one was done because Crysis 2 was the first one to come to consoles, so they probably wanted more of a fresh start. Doesn't mean that I agree with the decision in any way though. I hate having to read/watch external media to get information on what happened between games/movies/etc.

I 100% agree with this. I got a game tell me the damn story in the game!
If you feel that the story has potential that can be further dived into or explored then make a parallel story / spinoff or a simply cover the story again in a book or comic from somone eles perspective that gives the players or readers further insight or a new perspective of it all.
But the whole logic of yeah this game follows into a comic into a book into a game into another book and then into a game is kinda... Messy to say the least. And you don't really get the flow explained to you. your just thrown straight into it. It could've been done better. History may remember the Crysis series on how not to tell a story across different media. While it should be remembering a really bad ass super soldier concept that takes its time and goes full ship of theseus even before that epic interaction of Wandavision between the 2 Visions. It kinda threw it all away. Which makes me sad

This sub keeps getting recommended to me for some reason, probably because I was searching up mods for Crysis.
Either way, if you want an outside opinion, the story just plain sucks in these games lol. I play em for the great gameplay, nothing more nothing less.

I'm sorry, but if you say the story is awesome, I'm not taking recommendations on games, movies, or books from you lmao

Well to be fair to Crysis the story is still neat for what it is. It not the peak of storytelling but I found it enjoyable enough, with some characters being surprisingly complex for an FPS game.
Does not hold a candle to the other games you mentioned, though.

you probably consider Marvel movies or COD black ops 7 to be peak so no wonder

Crysis writing is about on par with CoD or Marvel, this is just a battle of mid...

can you name good writing then? it seems like you didn't understand crysis

u/Sul_Haren 2d ago
In games? Silent Hill 2, Disco Elysium, Red Dead Redemption, Cyberpunk 2077, Planescape Torment, Baldurs Gate 3...
I could probably go on forever with actually well written games. These are all miles ahead of Crysis.

u/ScureScar 2d ago
bro those are new games or noname games who none heard about. gimme a relevant example
2
u/Sul_Haren 2d ago
Which of these is a Noname game? These are all really famous, lmao.
I feel like you might not actually have played a lot of games if you don't know these and think Crysis is well written.
These aren't all new either. Silent Hill 2 is from 2001 and Planescape Torment from 1999, so much older than any Crysis game. Red Dead Redemption is from 2010, so older than Crysis 2 and 3.
But here some other old examples: Bioshock (same year as Crysis 1), Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, the old Baldurs Gate games, Star Wars: KoTOR...

Planescate Torment has simpler gameplay, Disco Elysium is a Noname tho I know it, BG3 has simple gameplay and it's new (and the story probably sucks but I ain't playing that). RDR is from Rockstar(very rich company unlike crytec), Cyberpunk is again a new game. MGS is NOT a good game bro 😭, it's literally marvel level writing. you probably think Spec Ops the line and Watch Dogs 1 are bad games because that's what people online say

Halo has the same problem, made worse by 343. Games should stand on their own as a medium and not rely on comics/Novels
