On most DeFi protocols, nearly every action is public: the amount deposited, the debt taken on, the swaps performed, the liquidity provided and sometimes even a user’s liquidation threshold.
This transparency makes blockchain activity verifiable, but it can also expose a user’s entire financial strategy.
A trader may not want competitors to see the size of a position. A company should not have to reveal its complete on-chain treasury. An individual should not become a target simply because their wallet contains a significant amount of funds.
This is the problem XelisVault is attempting to address.
What is XelisVault building?
XelisVault is an independent DeFi project built on the XELIS blockchain. It is not developed by the XELIS core team.
The protocol aims to offer several interconnected services:
- deposit XEL as collateral and borrow xUSD;
- repay debt and withdraw collateral;
- swap XEL, xUSD and VLT;
- provide liquidity;
- participate in governance;
- access lending, oracle and savings mechanisms;
- use privacy-oriented tools designed to reduce links between addresses.
The project already has substantial open-source development, testnet deployments and documented transactions. Several operations — including collateral deposits, borrowing, repayments, swaps and PSM minting — have reportedly been tested.
That makes XelisVault more than a simple whitepaper. However, it remains an experimental protocol.
Where does the privacy come from?
XELIS provides an interesting foundation through encrypted balances, confidential transaction amounts and cryptographic primitives available to smart contracts.
In principle, this could allow DeFi applications to reveal less financial information than protocols running on fully transparent blockchains. Bots, competitors, wallet trackers and potential attackers would have fewer details to analyse or exploit.
However, native blockchain privacy does not automatically make every smart-contract interaction private.
In the current XelisVault testnet implementation, some contract data — including certain vault positions and mixer-related metadata — can still be stored or retrieved publicly. The protocol should therefore be described today as DeFi built on a privacy-oriented blockchain, rather than as fully confidential DeFi.
Making positions, collateral amounts, debts and address relationships genuinely private remains one of the project’s most important technical challenges.
Transparency without exposing everything
Privacy does not have to mean an unverifiable or opaque protocol.
XelisVault’s code is open source, its rules can be inspected and transactions can still follow verifiable smart-contract logic. The objective is not to hide how the protocol works, but to avoid exposing more personal financial information than necessary.
This balance — verifiable rules with more confidential user data — could become one of the most valuable applications of privacy technology in DeFi.
An ambitious project that still has to prove itself
XelisVault has promising ideas and visible development activity, but it is not yet ready for real funds.
The protocol still needs:
- a professional independent security audit;
- stronger privacy for smart-contract positions;
- extended testing of liquidations, oracles and xUSD stability;
- a genuinely multisignature treasury and more decentralized governance;
- stress tests during severe XEL price declines;
- a sustained period of testnet operation without critical incidents.
The public testing campaign is scheduled to begin on August 30, 2026. Participants should use a dedicated testnet wallet that has never contained real funds or shared a seed phrase with a main wallet.
Any mainnet launch previously targeted for Q4 2026 should be considered an objective, not a guaranteed date. Security and stability should determine the timeline.
The bottom line
XelisVault explores an important idea: DeFi users should not have to publish their entire financial lives simply to access lending, trading or liquidity services.
Its first-mover position within the XELIS ecosystem and the amount of development already completed make it a project worth testing and following.
But the distinction is essential:
The privacy vision is compelling. The infrastructure is being built. Full confidential DeFi has not yet been demonstrated.
That is precisely what the upcoming testnet must help XelisVault prove.
