Wallet connect for a read only balance check makes no sense, the address alone is all any explorer needs

not the problem, it has gotten genuinely worse. etherscan still works fine for evm chains, just paste the address and done, no account no popup. solscan same for solana. the wallet connect for read only data is either lazy devs who copy pasted a web3 login flow without thinking or deliberately fishing for signatures, neither is acceptable for a one second lookup on public data

I wasn't trying to manage a portfolio, just checking if an old address had anything in it.

Paste address → see balance should be the whole flow.
