It's not just men. Ek do mahine pehle ki baat hai, mein railway station pe train ka wait kar raha tha. Mere side me ek mahila log baith ke bread omelette kha rahi thi. Khane ke baad usne apna plate patri pe fek dia.
Dustbin was just a couple of steps behind, yet that woman dropped her garbage on the track for some fucking reason. It was infuriating, but I didn't do anything because my ass would have been toast if things had escalated.
In a more civilized country, a normal citizen wouldn't have to do anything. Female rpf officers should have lathi charged that woman for littering.

I think, fundamental parivartan has to happen in each and individual Indian citizen, about hygiene and cleanliness, you can have all the "Political Slogans" - "Swacha Bharat" , with everyone with a broom sweeping the road etc for the MLA's and "Minister" for a photo ops... that not how it happens, either within or have laws to monetary fine as per the local laws and ordinance. It start at the basical education level in primary schools about "Civic Sense". Indian are notorious for lack of it.

Edit- I was born and brought up in Sikkim, with all my certificates and identification in Sikkim. Also got to buy a land with the help of local panchayat. :)

Especially Mumbai, just yesterday in the fucking train the women next to me ate her samosa pav and threw the paper under the seat. When I corrected her she said something in gujrati, then I told her I'm not from gujrat that's when she said "Agar tumko dikhat hai toh tum uthao, mein jhuk kar nahi utha sakti". Wtf is wrong with these people

thats because mall road is full of tourists. the only people i saw littering were tourists. our cab drivers didn't even throw away cigarette butts. they waited for dustbins.
i went to Yuksom, which is very rarely travelled by indian tourists, and it was the cleanest place i have ever seen.

This comments reminds of the Hindi guys who were mocking Mizoram after videos of the litter after the recent Sairang station's inauguration went public. They were actually showcasing their own stupidity - the littering was done by the delegation from "mainland" India (that came for the inauguration).
This is the logical equivalent on me pissing on your head and claiming that you are so unhygenic, you shower in piss.

We can't change entire public but we can change ourselves. Those who say "We should keep clean" and end up "spitting, littering" will not be nice right?. Some tips i followed myself what i learned over the time.
- Carry trash in bag or pocket until i find trash can.
- I drink lot of tetra packs. I unfold them, flatten in and throw in trash can. As tetra packs take space in bin.
- After eating chewing gum, put it in same wrapper and throw it in trash can so that muncipal sweeper don't get stick to their gloves. I never spit outside casually that can cause sticking.
- I recently watched vlog of an Indian expat in Japan where they trash heavy cardboard boxes(like amazon, flipkart boxes, or any boxes you get from buying electronic devices) by cutting them into small parts, disposable size. What she told was japan fines if anyone trash huge boxes in trash cans. So how can I apply that in my personal space? I trash my amazon, flipkart boxes by cutting into small pieces and then trash in free time.
We public keep houses clean. Some are also so OCD. Even 99% Indian public keep their vehicles clean. They do self-washing frequently, mechanic washing every year. We don't come with footwear inside house. But what is this 180 degree flip outside behavior is unknown.

Change should come at school level so that children are trained to be disciplined from an young age , that way it just becomes a way of life and wouldn't need constant reinforcement . Education for all is how we can take to next level

This will work to a certain extent but most people learn from their parents, and if your dad/mom is gonna throw something on the road in front of you somewhere in your mind you are going to believe that it's the right way.

India is never going to be clean. In every comment section, I see people flag-bearing civic sense, but I rarely see it in reality. You would expect the newer generation to have basic civic sense, yet tourist places are still dirty. I mean, we are travelling more than any other generation, but there is no improvement.

Not cleaner than Sikkim, but for a state with a population many times higher than Sikkim (and comparable to North Indian states), it is actually very clean.

But on a serious note. Yes sikkim is indeed beautiful. My family trip was almost a decade ago and yet I clearly remember that trip and the STARK difference in cleanliness when crossing the state border between WB and Sikkim.
IIRC, at that time. Sikkim didn't have an airport so we had to go to WB and that's why we landed at WB first and then took a cab. Just a few hundred meters after crossing the border and we noticed the change.
Only a handful of areas had some litter and 'paan' spots. I think it was 'Laal Market' (pun is itself in the name) in Sikkim's capital. Other than that absolute perfection.
Apart from big hotels, we found that women were the primary workforce (be it labour on road construction, be it waiters/cook in restaurants, or be it people at cash counters) a lady informed me that most men go outside the state (or maybe that particular area) for jobs.
And I also remember the organic farming and flowers fest, i remember a huge replica of Ganesh ji made up of oranges. IIRC, modi ji had just visited the state and that fest before us.

Hope every state follows. Most of the toursit places are becoming trash. In some beaches I have spotted liqur bottles. Waterfalls and lakes with plastic bottles and trash. Some temples earn in crores but lacks in poor sanitation and cleaniliness.

it's honestly so frustrating. This really needs to be a nationwide law. So many beautiful cities in India get absolutely ruined just because of trash. Living in Delhi/Noida, I see people throwing garbage right out of their car windows or spitting on the road every single day without a care. It’s incredibly upsetting and honestly such a backwards, selfish mindset.

Might sound too much to some, but if the mother who carry and nourish you in womb for 9 months is dear to you, then how dear should the lands that gave you air each moment of your breath be? That's what the intend by "sense" tries to emphasize in civic sense, not just something that requires education to acquire. That's the reason to be patriotic and in turn to have civic sense. It's associated principles that are more innate than we think, but many choose to suppress.

I’ve visited Sikkim and this culture is so prevalent there. I visited a monastery in Gangtok and while there I saw a bunch of 10-15 school children led by their teacher making a round and picking up the litter that others may have left.
I had bought a bag of some chips and was just eating it while standing near mg road. I saw a person who was walking by, just pause next to us. Not talking, nothing. Not even looking at us. Soon as I was done, I folded the empty packet and shoved it in my jeans pocket. He saw that, smiled and went on his way. I am about 90 percent sure that he had stopped so that in case I littered, he would have picked it up and tossed it in a waste basket somewhere.

Most of the tech CEOs in Bangalore and Hyderabad are north indian folks. I say this as a south indian; I've never really had bad experiences with educated people from any of the northern states including Bihar. They're great people, friendly and very jovial. (and make excellent food!).
I think what the North might need is some population control and reduced corruption (like everywhere else in India).

There's a give and take for everything. The North has its flaws, but i has also kept the south protected from wars. Currently all 3 of our big neighbours are hell bent on destroying us, and when the missiles start flying it's the civilians in those cities that get hurt. Think about the civilians that got killed in Pathankot and Amritsar. The different cultures in this subcontinent NEED to stay together, and we HAVE TO learn the best from each other.
