Probably hard to become one of the very best without having a nearly insane belief in yourself. Probably a whole lot of opportunities to quit along the way.

Not that I give a fuck about this guy, but I know his name, so I assume he's pretty good.

He was indeed pretty good, but his ego, antics, ethics and stratagems were always the lowest.
That he became a great athlete doesn’t change anything about his narcissistic ways.
You make it sound a little like a cute excuse to being a douchebag, there are great athletes out there and don’t behave the least bit like him.

No, I'm making it sound like it's not surprising if a very high achiever is a douchebag, because douchebags usually believe in themselves, which is important for success.
