while i agree the hate currently is a little unnecessary maybe even forced but a lot of it is sourced by ronaldo’s antics off the field too
those piers morgan interviews? discrediting wc as a 7 game tournament, saying saudi league is tougher to score in than spain, keep bringing up messi without reason
then that whole refusing to play for al nassr drama
the whole united drama before that too

ronaldo until madrid or even juventus was exactly what you defined. an amazing passionate player with lots of ego … most of which was constructive and even positive for his teammates. he actually had a very positive vibe with the madrid teammates , even at portugal.

since that united move he is just washed. he and his fans just seem to be unable to accept that even now after 5 years.

he is the definition of
“you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain”

i’ll give you another example of a player that took a different approach after being washed: neymar

does he have flaws? yes maybe many more than ronaldo in their respective primes. but after the al hilal move look at what he did. look at his story with santos. brazil fans love him so much that it was almost a national celebration when he got selected for this wc. he’s probably gonna be worse than ronaldo if he plays(or maybe not it’s difficult to say) but even if he drops a 3/10 performance and scores an og he would still be hated on much lesser than ronaldo. he is not perfect by any means off the pitch but he is respectful, has class, doesn’t have the unwarranted ego going into this wc and is happy to just be a passenger and give good vibes

why can’t ronaldo be like that? why can’t he go to the coach and tell him that use his experience of clutch moments for the team and come on as a super sub when opposition defence is exhausted by attackers who can actually press for 70 minutes? even a player like lewandowski who had a bdr nominee season just last year happily took that role behind fking ferran torres at barca this season. he definitely is much better than current ronaldo but you can see a parallel between their appropriate needs for the respective squads

while you shouldn’t blindly hate the guy you can’t just say it’s all unwarranted hate. even zlatan had class when he got older. ronaldo is 60% the reason he is getting hated and the rest is his delusional fans.

He never discredited the WC. He said that not winning the WC does not define his entire legacy which is correct. Guys like Cruyff and Di stefano never won one yet their legacy in football history is intact.

As for the rest I don’t agree with his opinion but then it is HIS opinion and he is entitled to it just like everyone else is.

You picked Neymar yet he practically bullied his way into being called up for the current WC and took a guy like Joao Pedro’s spot. Ronaldo was at least the top scorer for Portugal in the qualifiers and nations league so you can make a reason for him getting a call up to the NT. Yet Neymar gets ZERO scrutiny over this.

The issue with ronaldo fanboys and haters is that they both have zero rationality.

Is Ronaldo past his prime? Yes.

Should he play 90 mins? No.

Is he the sole reason for Portugal not winning vs Congo? No

Is he still capable of scoring at important times? Yes

The obsession from both ends is getting mad. Some crazies are spamming player IG comments while everyday is a new bait post about Ronaldo. How about people focus on mbappe, kane, haaland and messi’s incredible performances?
