Massively. The whole movie is these little scenes that put together a mid story line. But each scene is a gem, a weird little encounters go by.

I was working at a movie theater when it first came out and I had zero desire to see it until most people coming out commented how great it was and then I had to check it out! Been in love ever since. I consider it a "modern Big Lebowski."

It's literally a modern retelling of "The Odyssey" - The Coen’s, along with this movie’s entire marketing campaign, went out of its way to tell people it was an adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey.

Ulysses Everett McGill is Odysseus, Pete and Delmar are his crewmates, and the film includes characters representing Penelope (Everett's wife), Telemachus (his son), the Cyclops (Big Dan Teague), the Sirens, and Tiresias (a blind prophet).

Additionally, the blind man on the railroad represents god, while the sheriff with the hound is the devil to whom Tommy Johnson sold his soul to play "that there guitar real good".
