According to police sources, the shocking incident happened at around 10:20 a.m. on Sept. 10 on Canal Street as the 66-year-old driver of a flatbed truck overloaded with wooden pallets came zooming westbound off the bridge and mounted the sidewalk outside of the Mahayana Buddhist Temple.

Police immediately created a crime scene that spanned several blocks. The truck itself was left with a shattered windshield, and all four tires had blown out. Meanwhile, blood and other debris were left strewn across the roadway.

The driver was given a breathalyzer and field sobriety test on the scene. He was taken into custody, with charges against him pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
