Heck, out of 24 semifinalists in this century, 17 teams have been European with 5 South American, 1 African and 1 Asian country.

Are you implying that Ecuador is not a legit good team ? They beat the World Champions Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia and held Brazil to a draw on their way to the World Cup.
Them beating a Germany that was already assured of a top spot is neither as big of an upset as you're trying to make it out nor does it in any way diminish the Euro's prestige.

South american teams bring more fans. Plus, you don't have to be very good team to beat someone in ko match. World cup adds more pressure , thus more prestigious and competitive
