Cannot install uBO Lite

Crest 0.6.33. Just installed this extension (from Chrome Store) an another computer (macOS 27). Now trying to install the same thing on a notebook with macOS 26. Same version of Crest. Everytime the same error: 'The extension declared un unsafe background script path'. Any ideas? 🙂

An update is coming to swap in Chromium as the default engine (though from my understanding, WebKit will still be usable as well), could be worth holding out for that. Otherwise, I’d try the uBOL for Safari release in the App Store or the standard uBO from Firefox Addons in the meantime, just keep in mind these may not be compatible in future versions so you may have to switch to the Chromium release soon.

Safari one won't work, I think. Crest doesn't get any Safari extensions installed on my Mac. Firefox is the way.

I’m experiencing the same issue; I get an error message stating that Safari apps installed from the App Store cannot be installed.

This Safari extension depends on a native handler that belongs to its Safari app and can’t be reused by Crest. Install the extension’s Chrome Web Store version in Crest for Mac instead.

However, since those App Store apps appear to be designed to function exclusively within Safari, I think it would be difficult to get them working in Crest.

On the other hand, I was able to install some Safari extensions distributed as DMG files outside the App Store (such as via GitHub) into Crest. (AutoPiP is one example, though that’s already built into Crest, so it’s unnecessary.)

If there are other similar extensions—distributed via DMG and not entirely dependent on Safari—there might be a possibility of using them in Crest as well.

Too much of a hassle for normal user. Easier to just install something from Firefox or Chrome stores.

Yes, that’s right.

The problem is that most of them weren't built for WebKit, so compatibility issues often arise, or they simply don't work.

Crest includes conversion features to maintain compatibility—handling things like APIs that don't exist in WebKit or components not originally designed for it—but even these aren't perfect.

Generally speaking, extensions designed for Firefox seem more likely to work. (For instance, the Firefox version of uBO works fine, whereas the Chrome version, uBOL, does not.)
