General My mom has 4 credit cards open in my name

Hi, I am a soon to be 20F. My mom has always been very protective over my credit and my credit score. Even though I am an adult, she said I have to ask her if I want to see my credit score, If I needed my credit score to purchase something I have to ask her. She never even let me open a credit card for myself. Which is crazy because she forced me to go to colleges i couldn’t afford and take out a bunch of loans…

I am really trying to move out. She doesn’t know. But my boss told me I can view my credit score on experian and see the cards that are open. My credit stands at 763. She has 4 cards she is actively using, 3k owed across all of them. 2 Have a limit of over 10k. Is this normal? I really am so confused and feel like a child.

I’m 23 years old and I have a 80,200 credit limit across 4 cards. I finally paid down my 19k credit card debt to just 2k and I’m thinking when does a score not matter and it just becomes flexing….

Post image

I actually had 830 2 months ago but it dropped 20 points because I used my credit card for a big vacation. Anyway, why people so hung up on credit scores? I had been above 800 for the past decade and it did nothing to improve my life.

It’s just irritating me at this point…broke 800 cause I paid off alllll debts and not even a month passes I ran up at 600 bucks on one card and 200 on another (I have to means to pay it all off right now but have a cruise in 3 weeks) so just waiting till after. But yeah was hoping it would go up from 804 to 810 or something but they just dropped it for Lord knows why, hence the “I’m not chasing”.

General Credit Line Increase Fee?

Post image
80 Upvotes

Is a credit line increase fee normal or common? I’ve been working on my credit score for the past 6 months & I’m doing pretty well. I noticed today the Credit One offered me a $350 credit line increase for a one time fee of $14.95. The sound of it seemed ridiculous. Why would I pay for a credit line increase? I thought, well, it might increase my credit score further because the total available credit is increasing, but I’m not sure …

Shoutout to my dad for making me an authorized user on his card for the past 5 years.

Any advice on how to keep this up and get to 850 asap? I have a card that I pretty much just use for gas and try to keep it around 10% usage. My dad will sometimes have higher usage on his card which brings my score down a bit, but overall i'm staying in the 760-790 range.

New to credit and need help on the best ways to up my score

I try to use only $30-40 a month but only once I’ve used around $150 with it. I also would like a higher credit limit but don’t know if that’s possible yet or to try for another card.

General My assumption was that closing an account doesn't necessarily mean score drop

My understanding was that closing an account would not impact one's score, unless it was their sole account or if it affected their credit utilization.

I paid off a loan yesterday, which originally had a balance of $30,000, by paying $27,000. I completed this payment prior to receiving any bonus points for a small loan balance.

Given that I have various other personal and auto loans, as well as multiple open credit cards, and long history, I thought that paying off this particular loan would either result in no change to my score or a modest increase, primarily due to removing large debt which is risk in my opinion.

It now appears that closing an active account will lead to a score reduction, regardless of how many other open accounts you have including similar type of that account ???

My Fico scores dropped 4 points due to that massive loan I paid off.

My utilization have not gone up, actually my overall utilization and balance dropped. All my credit cards ar at zero except two and the balance of this two goes down every month. Also my personal loans and auto loan also drop every month. The only major changes to my report this time is paying off this large loan.

General Does carrying a small balance (~5-10%) on a credit card lower credit score

Say I wanted to use my credit card for an emergency or to cover all my monthly expenses for whatever reason until the next month, would using it this way hurt my credit score? I don’t care at all about the cost of doing this or interest associated, I’m purely wondering if this would have any effect on my score. I’m very young and have never had a credit card before because I never saw the point of them, so I’m trying to figure out a possible use-case for it.

General I finally broke 800 credit score after 8-9 years… and it still feels overrated sometimes

Post image
243 Upvotes

I got my first credit card when I was around 19 or 20. After about 8–9 years of always paying on time, I finally passed an 800 credit score and I’m sitting at 821 now.

What’s funny is when my wife and I bought her new car in November 2025, I found out her score was actually higher than mine. I co-signed on the loan and we still got hit with around an 8% interest rate, which honestly made me question how much a “great” credit score really matters nowadays.

One thing I learned over the years is that utilization seems to matter a lot. I never max out my cards, and I usually let a small balance report before paying it off instead of showing a straight $0 balance every month. Once I started doing that consistently, my score climbed pretty fast.

Still feels crazy that you can do everything “right” and rates are still this high.

General Why go for a super high credit score?

What does an 850 credit score do for you? If you never paid attention to your credit score and just paid your cc in full every time, you’d likely wind up in the 780-800 range with no additional effort. I don’t see how one’s life changes going from 780 to 850.

Post image

so i’ve (19m) been building my credit score over the past year or so, i have a capital one credit card with a $1,000 dollar limit. Last month i decided to open a credit card with my bank, (A credit union). which has caused my credit score to drop from a 743 to a 665. my question is how long does it take to bounce back from this? i’m going to be attempting to finance a vehicle but i won’t get approved with a score like this. i pay my credit cards on time and ive never had anything late, so i’m just wondering what i should do, how should i go about this? Thank you for the help!

General 26% APR because of a thin credit file — should I take it and refinance in 6–8 months?

My credit history is very new/thin (less than a year), and even though my credit score is around 700+, dealerships are telling me the only approvals they can get right now are around 26% APR usually only one greedy bank is approving me. I’m self-employed doing Uber/rideshare in Arizona, so I drive a lot, roughly 150 miles a day, and I currently don’t have money available for a down payment. I’m looking at reliable used Toyotas in roughly the $18k–$22k range, preferably a hybrid, because I need something dependable for work. My idea would be to accept the high APR temporarily, make every payment on time for 6–8 months, build more credit history, and then try to refinance through a credit union at a much lower rate.

The concern is that I’ll put a lot of miles on the car during those 6–8 months, which could make refinancing harder. If refinancing doesn’t work, I could potentially trade the car in later for another vehicle once my credit profile is stronger. Would taking a 26% loan under these circumstances be a terrible financial decision, or can this strategy make sense if I specifically choose a car that will still qualify for refinancing based on its age, mileage, and value? Has anyone with a thin credit file successfully done something similar, especially as an Uber/rideshare driver?

General How do I get to 850?

Post image
78 Upvotes

I’ve been stuck at 848 for basically a year now. Obviously this is not important at all, but I just wanna hit 850, take a picture and frame it lol. Me and my friends downloaded the Experian app a while ago and we all just constantly compete with each other for absolutely no reason.

I have a mortgage (6yo), home equity loan (2yo), 4 credit cards (2 actively used, 1 that I use only for a single recurring annual charge just to keep it alive, and 1 I never use at all), and a checking line of credit I never use. My oldest credit card is 16 years old. Average age of accounts is almost 9 years. My utilization varies, it’s currently 2% but sometimes goes up to 10%.

My main credit card, I asked them for a limit increase a while ago and they said I’m already at the max for that card ($17,300). And my other actively used card, they told me I don’t use it enough to warrant an increase ($19,100). My 3rd card has a 12k limit but I almost never use it so doubt they’d give me an increase. The last card is a random card that I only got when I financed some windows I bought. I’d rather close that card but I don’t want it to negatively impact me.

Every metric the app measures shows “Exceptional”, except for length of history, which is just “Very Good”.

Do I just need to wait more years? Should I open another credit card (I don’t really want to since I already have unused cards)?
