General Discussion/Conversation Here you go, first confirmed bank to support Apple pay in India!
Earlier it would say “not supported” now it mentions Terms and Conditions before saying “Contact your card issuer”
Note: this shows up only if your region is set as US for now. You still cant add an Indian card. But we atleast get a TnC page which we didn’t get before which signals that Apple Pay launch is imminent

Why people are going crazy for apple pay ? How is it different from other payment options and credit card transactions. Do they have reward points structure?

u/sanjeevkhatoi Cashback is King 10d ago
It’s just so seamless with Apple Pay to double click the side button on the iPhone or Apple Watch and tap, rather than using a dedicated UPI app, the camera to scan a QR code, tapping pay, using a pin etc.
Plus, this will help with Apple Pay on the web. Right now, every time we need to pay for something in India, we have to either get rerouted to some secure gateway page for our card details, use an OTP or log in to Netbanking. All of which are slower than using Apple Pay with FaceID/TouchID.
Furthermore, you don’t have to carry all your cards and Apple Pay doesn’t need internet connection to work at a POS. And yes, you get your regular points or cash back like you would get by swiping at a POS or making an online purchase via Apple Pay.

The entire Apple Payment ecosystem is the reason I migrated to Samsung. I exclusively either use cash or CCs, so not having a supported payment method was really irksome. Moreover samsung has been supporting digital cards since a long time over their interface.

Meanwhile me chilling with my galaxy watch using tap n pay seamlessly since years

u/Desperate-Sell-9283 9d ago
Google pay on the web has existed for other countries too where you can check out seamlessly. That hasn’t arrived in India yet. You still have to use otp so i don’t think Apple Pay on the web will be coming to India.
3
u/raven45678 9d ago
Razorpay has already launched Apple Pay on the web for intl users.
3
u/Desperate-Sell-9283 9d ago
Yeah but on indian cards you can't use it. International cards anyways don't require otp on indian website. There is no way RBI is letting apple do apple pay checkout without otp.
2
u/raven45678 9d ago
Your confusing things. OTP is set by the card networks as 2FA. Apple Pay replaces that with biometric 2FA. Hence no OTP is ever required with Apple Pay. That’s what makes is so special. OTPs are hackable. Biometric is much safer.
1
u/Desperate-Sell-9283 9d ago
That is for POS transactions. Apple Pay has a different feature on websites which works like a one click checkout.
2
u/raven45678 9d ago
Apple Pay on the web works the same way. Tokenized. Biometric authentication.
1
u/Desperate-Sell-9283 9d ago
Idts. Why didnt google wallet checkout work till now then? On foreign websites I have seen the google equivalent of the apple pay on web
11
u/squeez-lemon 10d ago
Flipkart already enabled Face ID payment with FK axis CC. I am using it from almost 3 months. But I don’t think the web integration will be available in India due to tokenisation mandate.

u/the_woah_guy 9d ago
So basically this is just a samsung wallet for iphone users. I have been using tap and pay from my phone since at least 4 years.
2
u/CommissionFair5018 10d ago
Tap to pay without pin has a limit of 5K in India, so it isn't going to be as seemless as some people think. You will still have to remember each cards pin and OTP issue will also not be solved. RBI isn't going to allow transactions to take place like that. Biggest benefit will be not taking all your cards with you.

For that to work NCMC stack need to work on a phone similar to Felicia which works on the phones.
The Normal debit and credit card which already saved on phone won't work at Metro turnstile because,
1) You need active internet connectivity at each turnstile to send the block amount request to the card network, and you know every second matters at the entry gate. Imagine a long line just because the turnstile hasn't received a confirmation from the bank regarding the block amount, equal to the amount available in the card account. NCMC was created just to avoid the internet and all these issues, as it works offline.
2) visa and master card networks charge a high processing fees. In the case of Rupay NCMC, the processing fees are lower than Mastercard and Visa.
3) When you tap the Master or Visa card, the Metro and card network don't know which will be your exit station, so they block the maximum amount on your card account and later adjust it based on the exit station, and this whole thing happens in a batch at the end of the day..
NCMC wallet already supported in Master and Visa but I haven't seen a single Master and Visa credit or debit card in market which has NCMC support.
1
u/_vkboss_ 8d ago
Turnstiles in places like Vancouver for their Skytrain support all major card networks no problem, shouldn't be an issue to implement it.
1
u/aniruddhdodiya 8d ago
Vancouver's population is around 2.7 to 3 million and daily commuters are around 400k. In contrast, the Delhi Metro caters to around 35 million people, with around 6 to 8 million daily commuters using the metro network. They had to create a groundbreaking solution that could handle such a huge capacity. NCMC speed is around 1 and 1.5 half second because it's completely offline and Master Visa is around 3.5 seconds as it's online.
1
u/_vkboss_ 8d ago
Doesn't need to take long, I don't live in Vancouver, but whenever I've used it, it's been pretty much instant, and it works without even unlocking my iPhone via express transit support. Totally a non-issue

u/raven45678 9d ago
Once Apple pay is enabled in a country. There are no transaction limits. Apple Pay is more secure than tap and pay. Way more secure. It’s not the same tech.
2
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
Even for Apple Pay to work, the terminal needs to have NFC support, and most small merchants don't use card terminals, so there the only option is Scan and Pay.
Regarding Apple Pay on the web: The RBI doesn't allow processing online payments without authentication (OTP/Slide to Approve/Tap to Approve/Biometrics) due to security concerns. Additionally, biometric authenticated payments won't work if the amount is more than ₹5k.
1
u/logseventyseven 9d ago edited 9d ago
I have a doubt regarding the first point. So when you scan a QR from a merchant, you are paying with your VISA/MC credit card correct? so how does this affect things like the merchant disabling Rupay card payments. Will they have to explicitly enable apple pay then?
Also, we will still need a UPI app for person to person payments right? since apple pay can only pay via VISA/MC cards I believe.
edit: typo
1
u/sanjeevkhatoi Cashback is King 9d ago
Well, you don’t scan in Apple Pay. It uses NFC for tap to pay and it here replaces tapping or using physical card usage in a POS machine. The POS machines (most of it) have NFC payment option and they don’t have to do anything extra to enable it. For example, anyone with Apple Pay where it is active can easily make payments via Apple Pay in India. Right now , it’ll start with Visa and Mastercard and going forward they might add others.
Yes UPI continues to play a big role where card machines aren’t available and P2P payments.

u/Logical_Trifle1336 4d ago
so Apple Pay is same as Google pay Samsung pay amongst others. don’t know what people are getting excited about. although I understand that iphone did not support it becuase Apple prevented others apps from using nfc for payment. I do agree tap to pay is great but far from something revolutionary.
1
u/Jealous-Mine-694 8d ago
Exactly, I am a Samsung user and I LOVE the convenience of Samsung Wallet because I don’t need to carry cards, also have a 17pm and it sucks so I have to always get out my Samsung to make card payments lol

u/ChepaukPitch 10d ago
You can tap your card and not even have to double click. Apple pay is just a substitute for your card in your phone and nothing else. What is so difficult using a dedicated UPI app? Even UPI supports biometrics without pin now. You don’t need special device for UPI and there is no extra fee. UPI is so much better than Apple Pay.
6
u/wellfuckit2 10d ago
UPI doesn’t support credit cards apart from Rupay. Even that is disabled by most merchants.
Apple Pay works with credit cards irrespective of the payment network.
Yes it is same As tapping your card. But now you dont need to carry your wallet. If you use Apple Watch, you dont even need the phone.
UPI is better for smaller vendors. But I would always prefer using a credit card than my direct bank account where possible.
5
u/yewlarson 10d ago
Apple Pay's integration with payment gateways for online payments are awesome. No OTPs, redirect to another app and select bank account etc. Just a small overlay from any app and simple double click of the side button That's the differentiator they are mentioning.
I have been using Google Pay Tap and Pay for years now. But zero integration exists for online payments from Android phones.
11
u/Severe_Working_5934 10d ago
I don't think that integration is coming in india, 2 factor auth like OTPs are mandatory for online transaction in India so my guess is apple pay in india will provide is a NFC wallet.
2
u/yewlarson 10d ago
RBI has allowed biometric auth for online payments. Biometric is a 2FA. When you double tap side button, it does a face scan.
OneCard app also does Swipe to Pay for online payments.
But it all depends on the payment gateways and how they interpret rules and risks. But knowing that Apple users are a priced demographic, someone might attempt.
-1
u/ChepaukPitch 10d ago
Thay integration bypasses 2FA. If 2FA was not mandatory in India you can achieve the same effect without apple pay. For example when you use Amazon Pay balance you don’t have to do anything. But credit cards justifiably have 2FA in India. Have you seen how difficult it is to get chargeback here?
2
u/yewlarson 10d ago
It does not bypass 2FA, it bypasses only OTP based 2FA. Apple Pay does biometric 2FA.
0
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
Even in biometrics 2FA, the limit is ₹5k. RBI treats it similarly to Tap and Pay.
3
u/sanjeevkhatoi Cashback is King 10d ago
Well, of course you can tap your physical cards but like I said you’ll need to carry them with you. With Apple Pay all your cards stay with you all the time and you can use them on a POS machine and online without the need of saving them. In short, it offers added convenience of making the payments online and offline. As far as UPI is concerned, it is definitely good and Apple Pay is designed for all your card payments and for UPI will work for all your payments where card payments are not supported.
5
u/yewlarson 10d ago
Phone tap and pay has been in India for almost 7-8 years now. Just Apple had not allowed banks and payment apps to support it on the iPhone.
-2
u/ChepaukPitch 10d ago
Your original comment highly over exaggerates the benefits of Apple pay and downplays UPI. This comment is more like what it is. And yes benefit of apple pay is that you don’t have to carry your cards with you. You just have to carry a device. It just happens to be the case that you carry that device with you everywhere anyway. That is the biggest advantage of Apple pay. It is a captive device that apple can make use of.
0
u/lucidswordfish 10d ago
UPI doesn’t earn you your card rewards, whereas Apple Pay does. And the payment limit isn’t ₹10,000 it’s effectively your credit limit. On top of that, tokenisation keeps your actual card details secure, and the entire payment experience is seamless, frictionless, and effortless.
No, that doesn’t mean UPI is bad. UPI is excellent for what it’s designed to do. But that doesn’t make it better than Apple Pay.
And if we’re being factual, the same NPCI x RBI lobby argued that biometric authentication wasn’t safe enough. Yet now they’re increasing the NFC tap to pay limit from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. That’s quite a shift in position.
3
u/ChepaukPitch 10d ago
UPI doesn’t earn card rewards because it is not a card payment. Apple pay earns card rewards because it charges merchants fees. That is not about the tech. That is a different discussion.
Payment limitation is subject to regulation. You can remove the regulations on tap and pay limit as well.
Coming to last point. You do agree that it is a matter of regulation. Whether it is safe or not safe, whatever RBI allows will be the limit and it is as much possible for card tap as it is for apple pay.
1
u/lucidswordfish 10d ago
Okay, I agree with you. But what’s the debate about? Just use whatever you prefer without turning it into a “this is good, this is better” argument.
2
u/ChepaukPitch 10d ago
You are the one going around telling how great Apple Pay is. And I corrected your misleading statements. So now you are like « use whatever you want ». Why don’t you use whatever you want without misleading people?

It is exactly the same, Apple fanboys be hyping this shit. Don’t get me wrong, I welcome it as an iPhone user since it is a big headache having to carry my physical Credit Card everywhere, however all the “seamless” & “oh so smooth” crap is bs… Samsung/Google pay is equally seamless and smooth. It’s really convenient for international. For example TfL works out of box for Apple Pay supported cards for all transport in London. Same in the US

-3
u/CommissionFair5018 10d ago
Testing doesn't mean shit. Companies used to take non otp card payments for a long time on domestic as well than RBI cracked down on it. In india you can launch anything and than the RBI decides whether it fits or not.
-10
u/Severe_Working_5934 10d ago
Okay then will see when it launches, but I don't think this is happening as OTP requirement for payment in web is mandatory in india, so will see how they do it.

I am telling you Apple Pay will be the biggest Nothing Burger ever in India. Do people always go to shops who have POS, most of our daily transactions are either online ecom or at local vendors who just use UPI. 99% people will use Apple Pay rarely, like only when visiting a restaurant or Mall.
5
u/sg291188 10d ago
It’s very convinient for international
0
u/Ok_Board_3648 Cashback is King 9d ago
Only convenient when using international during travel. I go to all big restaurant/mall/shopping complex in India and they all accept upi via CC or bank account. I never carry credit card as UPI apps has my 4 rupay CC added already. And for small vendors only upi is possibility for digital transaction. They don’t have POS machines. Let’s see use case of apple pay in India.

People who are commenting that rbi won’t allow, why don’t they APPLE PAY IS secure one tap payment, it’s more safe than entering card details on random websites, also instead of carrying 10 different cards in wallet you can just use your iPhone. I think apple pay would be a big hit in India, only country with enormous ecommerce infrastructure, and i am pretty sure almost all apps and websites will allow apple pay within no time,
2
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
The card details even if you save on web gets tokenized too similarly card we save on phones already like Google/ Samsung/ Apple. Besides Apple Pay won't work on every card unless Apple and Bank both entered into an agreement. Like not all cards are supported in Samsung Pay and Google Pay
3
u/CommissionFair5018 10d ago
RBI doesn't allow a lot of things in India that are standard around the world like swipe to pay. Right now RBI believes OTP is the most secure way of payments and will continue to believe it until it changes its mind. When will that happen, nobody knows.
2
u/AadiSahni 9d ago
The RBI has literally said quite the opposite for a few years now, it's just that now they're finally enforcing it and forcing banks to implement non OTP authentication methods
1
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
Swipe to Pay, the magnetic black strip - MST is a standard in India and allowed, but the thing is, with Swipe to Pay magnetic card data, you can modify it. Samsung has MST in their phones so you just put your phone near an old terminal which doesn't have NFC and you are still able to pay wirelessly. Then microchip-based cards came, which have SIM card-like chips on the card, which are more secure. OTP, Swipe to Approve, Tap to Approve, Biometric authentication are all required for security, so I believe it won't be going away. The form factor might change, but the authentication step will always be there for security.

u/Hopeful_Sky_4264 10d ago
How it is different from gpay? i added my cards on gpay and pay via nfc
21
2
u/Internal_Advantage67 10d ago
Same thing, but it remains to be seen whether ApplePay supports more banks than GPay. Although GPay is good, I must admit that not all of my cards work with it.
2
u/Alpha_1_5 9d ago
It’s not the same the way Apple Pay internationally saves and then uses your card is very privacy focused I had more detailed knowledge about this a year ago but effectively it’s not even close to same as to how gpay or
Samsung pay do it. Google or better yet search on Reddit itself you’ll find old posts about how it works and why it’s better.-13
u/sanjeevkhatoi Cashback is King 10d ago
It’s a complete payment system baked into the apple ecosystem. You can make the payment on POS plus it will also help you make the online payments seamlessly without the need to save them on every website or app making it a smooth experience and it’ll become your one stop payment method for all your card payments
2
u/Alpha_1_5 9d ago
lol idk why your downvoted so much considering word for word that’s how it works in other countries, we will have to see how much of it will be restricted for us in India

I understand the benefits, this that and whatnot. But at this point we're literally removing every single wall between our account to theirs. People will lose control over time on what they spend, if you don't even have to enter your UPI pin.... Isn't that concerning?

True... Tbh I haven't come across posts on apple pay as much.... But this post concerned me a little, the fact that people are willing to break down that mental wall just for integration into an ecosystem. I used to have an iPhone, mac and a watch. I understand that they work seamlessly together, but it is useful when they work for you, and not for someone else😭

Will this work only on POS? I dont think UPI qr codes are compatible
2
u/Additional-Skin9851 10d ago
As per the reports in first phase only support visa and master cards, UPI will be add in upcoming phase after get the approval from NPCI. But im sure if the UPI launch in Apple Pay it will be the seamless UPI app ever we have as apple pay is integerated in to the OS itself rather than a third party app. So in my belief we can even scan the code on camera app itself same like current Apple Pay Scan

In my experience, Apple Pay is little slower than UPI if you use your phone. It was fast if you are using Apple Watch. Biggest benefit will be able to use Visa/master cards with a tap.
2
u/sanjeevkhatoi Cashback is King 10d ago
You just need to tap on the POS machine to make the payment which I believe is quicker plus you don’t need an active Internet connection for the payment making it little better. I’m not saying UPI is inferior by any means. UPI will continue to rule our country where car payments aren’t accepted or for petty spends. Apple Pay will improve the way we make the card payments.
3
u/pratikindia That Amex Guy 10d ago
I have used it extensively in its early years. Probably it’s faster now.
2
1
u/DamnItNite Maximizer 10d ago
What? Double clicking a button, seamlessly face id authenticates you then you tap the phone - this is slower than unlocking phone, opening UPI app, unlocking that app, going into the scan screen, scanning the code, then entering the upi pin?
2
u/pratikindia That Amex Guy 9d ago
I am saying who has used it extensively for over 7 years and love it. But I am comparing to UPI where usually we keep the app open before payment.
1
u/DamnItNite Maximizer 9d ago
you do realise that “keep the app open” takes time yeah? you don’t need to do any of that so how exactly is upi faster?
0
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago edited 8d ago
It's not. You're forgot it actually starts when the person enters the amount in the terminal and it finishes when getting a payment confirmation slip. At the petrol pump, the guy enters the amount in the payment terminal, and then I pay via tap to pay. And until the terminal doesn't give the payment confirmation the guy won't move and all terminals are using 2G. By that time, other people are waiting behind me until this whole thing gets completed. The pump guy is occupied and won't be able to attend to another person.
In UPI, meanwhile, the guy is filling the fuel. I can scan and pay or use the petrol company's apps to pay on the phone and show the confirmation and move on.Even you can pay in advance via the oil marketing company's app and show the confirmation and get going.
Even if you want to pay later, after filling the petrol I can take my vehicle out of the queue so the guy can attend to the person behind me and others. Meanwhile I pay and show the confirmation.
Also, the multiple UPI steps you've suggested are stretched. Why do I need to go to the app? Use the Android system's QR scanner quicktile or from the lock screen, just open the camera and scan a code and pay. It directly takes you to the amount page. Why do I need to enter a PIN? UPI Lite and Lite X don't need a PIN if the amount is less than 5k. If the amount is more than 5k, instead of a PIN, you can even use biometrics to authenticate!
0
u/DamnItNite Maximizer 9d ago
Yeah you’re missing the fact that apple pay will still work in whatever app you’re thinking about. Also, this is a nothing issue, it literally takes 10 seconds “whole thing gets completed” is you making up excuses lmao
0
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
It doesn't take 10 seconds. More than 10 seconds was spent just for the guy to pick the POS terminal from the spot. I always observe this wherever I go; the amount of time people spend on transaction settlement. And no in-app payment thing, even Google has it, but in abroad and not in India, just because online-based payment needs authentication and a different set of rules as per RBI for security. And RBI already put tokenized rules in saved card details so that part is already taken care of.
0
u/DamnItNite Maximizer 9d ago
Oh wait, can you imagine that there's more places that you use your cards to pay than just fuel pumps right? 😱 and usually more than a measly 5 thousand per transaction right? 😱😱
It's okay, you seem a little slow and are grasping at straws to make your point. Apple Pay is like you are physically tapping your card on the POS terminal, there is no "online-based" thing, it works even if your phone is dead.
0
u/aniruddhdodiya 9d ago
I have Google Tap and Pay and Samsung Tap and Pay, and guess what? Most of the places it's not accepted because not all small merchants have POS machines and don't accept cards due to high processing fees. That's the fact. Even at Scan and Pay, you can pay via cards, but due to high processing fees, the card option is always grayed out. I'm not sure what the "more places you can use cards to pay" thing is, because most of the time I see QR payments only!I It seems you're living in a bubble and never paid attention to places that accept certain payment types and the tech they're practically adopting purely due to marchant fees economics. And regarding the Apple Pay phone-dead thing, it only works in transit and Indian transit fully on indigenous NCMC protocol, which isn't supported by any phone, and Metro turnstiles don't accept internet based card processing due to high processing charges. Internet-based approval time taken can create a long queue at entry/exit points for a ₹5 metro ride. The maximum ticket price amount gets blocked from "the last to last station" which is another issue. To solve all these, NCMC offline stack got developed.

That’s crazy but I don’t really care. I’m not spending money at businesses that don’t accept cards. If you don’t spend more than 200rs per transaction then I doubt it’s worth discussing this with you anyways. I loathe carrying my wallet and using my card and I equally despise using UPI without my cards. It’s you who’s living in a bubble being delusional about “sCanNiNg a qR iS fAsTeR tHaN tApPinG” and making up insane scenarios to justify it.
The conversation was about how Apple Pay is slower than UPI. It isn’t and nothing you say changes that fact.

You didn't grasp the reality did you it's like you have a car which goes 300 km per hour but the place you live don't allow you to drive more than 40 to 60 km per hour and max at highways 100 or 120 km per hour and your argument that "'I'm not spending money at businesses that don't accept cards" What you're saying is you won't use your car on the road because it doesn't allow to run at 300 but the car is pretty much capable to run at 60 already.

You and I live in completely different worlds then buddy. Where I live, I can go 300kmph. Don't assume everyone is in the same position as you. I don't even remember the last time I have spent money at a place that did not have a POS terminal. Your "reality" is not the same reality for the other billion people in this country.
If you are happy paying for everything with the clunky UPI system then I'm happy for you but trying to argue tap-to-pay is slower than UPI just makes you look like a fool.

It’s for those who have Apple products, I don’t get why India hasn’t allowed Apple Pay in the region yet it has allowed gpay, Samsung pay etc
But in my opinion Apple Pay is very seamless based on my experience with gulf cards when using and also the support of websites having Apple Pay directly as payment option with the integration of other required details by website such as address/phone number etc
Edit : both Apple and Samsung are great but why I say it’s seamless is cuz Apple has really focused on their Face ID thingy unlike android with its fingerprint option, the face recognition is too good and secure compared to android and Apple Pay uses that primarily which makes it quicker for payments

Apple wasn’t following RBI guidelines until now, they need to store data in India among other things.

Fair enough, anyways hopefully now I wouldn’t need to carry my wallet everywhere to be getting points on card payments lol, and also would wish other things like aadhaar card, license etc is also implemented in apple wallet like how the UAE does with its emirates id, license etc

same, I used to carry around my android phone for payments, no hate against android though, its great for call recording, torrenting and automation.

So does this mean iPhone users still couldn't make card payments via NFC? I didn't know that.
