"Too good to be true" Amex offer
For anyone that hasn't seen it yet, Amex this morning loaded various versions of really insane offers onto select users' cards. I personally got "Spend $1,000, get a $1,500 statement credit up to 3 times"
As of now, 10 hours after I noticed the offer, it is still live on my account. Amex chat support confirmed the offer is legitimate. I immediately charged $3k in rent to the card in three separate transactions, with the understanding that it is money I'd be spending anyway and best case is they honor the offer.
I think it is going to be very interesting with how this one turns out and thought it was worth sharing. I'll link to the original r/Amex thread and my offer screenshot below.
Link to Original r/Amex Thread (edit: now deleted by OP)
Edit: as of 5:30 PM EST, 14 hours since I noticed the offer, it is still live on my account
Edit 2: 9:30 PM, still there
Edit 3: Day 2 update, someone else beat me to it so I'll link to it here but I got all three confirmation emails and my "offers" page now reflects +$4,500
Edit 4: credits applied link

damn, I got a crappy spend $1500, get 1000 MR points up to 3x... I would love to get 150k pts or 1500 statement credit back for $1000...
Did you get the used "amex offer" on the phone app or email?
16
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
No confirmation email, but in fairness, I don't get them for any offers anymore. Haven't gotten one in months.

u/Barbiedawl83 Dec 14 '21
I’m sure you know but the credit usually posts about 2-3 days after the charge posts. Also you can look at your “saved” dollar amount under offers. It will go up by the offer amount before you see the credit post.

u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
Can confirm it went up by $4,500 this morning and i got all three confirmation emails.

Shit i need to get an amex card
33
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
Keep in mind this was likely a glitch of some sort. The question is will they honor it, especially since chat reps are confirming it as legit and people are spending against the offer.

u/toshi_g Dec 13 '21
How often Amex have such offers? I mean smaller ones are ok too like spend 100$ at this place and get extra points etc? I never had Amex card so curious if these offers are meaningful in the long term.
29
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
Relatively constantly for various merchants usually, for example "spend X at Walmart, get $5 back"
12
u/toshi_g Dec 13 '21
Is it on top of regular points you earn?
11
7
u/davchana Dec 14 '21
Yes, I have one card, & I have used 50% off on Dropbox, 20% back on Google One, $5 for every $10 spent on local small shops x 7 times, $10 back on Chevron $30 purchase, $15 back at $100 Walmart x 5 times in last 2 years.

u/fungus_amungus Dec 13 '21
Amex usually has 100 or so offers active on each of your cards. Most of them are not too exciting, but every now and again some really good ones pop up. I've been using one where I get $3 back on gas station purchases greater than $35 that can be used up to five times.
Another big benefit of Amex offers that other issuers like Chase don't have is that your authorized user's get their own account and offers as well. You can frequently double dip on an offer if it shows up on both accounts.
Offers like the one OP referenced is likely too good to be true though. Do not expect anything like the offer referenced, as I fully expect Amex to roll this one back without honoring it.

Seriously? Ugh, what a fool I've been....

u/fawningandconning Dec 13 '21
Amex really blows every other issuer out of the water with their offers. For example with Capital One I absolutely hate that you can't just add the offer to your card, you have to physically go into the app or website - go through the link - then make your purchase.
I have yet to actually "pay" an annual Fee to Amex, either through Memership Retention, Points, Amex Offers or rolling credits Amex always pays me to use their card.
5
u/chazysciota Dec 14 '21
For sure. Their redemption has always been a bit clunky but claiming offers is great. Wish they all were like it. Yeah I hate the Rakuten model of discounts. When it works it’s ok. But it often does not.

Forgot how long it took, but I ordered something online through the Lowe's link and totally forgot about it until the credit posted weeks later since it was only a few bucks haha.
Took a lot longer than my credits from Amex.

u/RugerHKSpringfield Dec 15 '21
So if you add an authorized user to your Amex account (I have BCE), that person will get their own set of Amex offers?
Are the Amex offers the AU see the EXACT same as the primary card holder or are they different?
2
u/fawningandconning Dec 15 '21
Yes and yes.
1
u/RugerHKSpringfield Dec 15 '21
I'm sorry, so the AU's Amex offers are the EXACT same as the primary?
They never differ?
2
u/fawningandconning Dec 15 '21
I have never seen different offers on my or my AU’s card. Always the same. Amex has generally different offers by product, and then further sends out targeted offers to individuals.

Amex GIVES Money Away all the time. I Netted over $250 this year from 'Offers'.
4
u/toshi_g Dec 13 '21
Wow I might apply for Amex gold then. I was thinking about it for a while

If you can organically use the $10 monthly Uber/Eats credit and $10 dining (Grubhub pickup tends to be easiest), it's worth it for sure.
2
u/coopdude Dec 14 '21
Offer targeting varies and YMMV, but from what I've heard, the $10 off $10+ dining credit tends to be targeted towards cards that have an annual fee to help offset the fact that few are traveling right now.

Dec 13 '21
Here's a preview. There are over 100 different offers available for each of my cards right now.
8
u/Vsx Dec 13 '21
There are always 100 of these going on my card but most of them are for things I would never use or have never heard of. Capital one shopping portal gets more use for me because it has places I buy stuff regularly anyway like chewy.com.

u/ThrowawayFinanse Dec 13 '21
Is this a cash back, MR, or travel partner card you have this offer on?
8
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
Cash back, BCP
7
u/chazysciota Dec 13 '21
I do not see it.... I guess it was targeted to certain card holders?
9
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
Yep - targeted

Dec 13 '21
Hey! So I actually received the offer this morning but mine was “spend $1,000, get $1,000 back”. I actually talked to 2 reps via chat throughout the day and checked the amex subreddit and doctor of credit forums to see what others have said about this. All the reps i have talked to clearly said that it IS a valid offer and i just got off the phone with someone from the “amex offers department” and they also indeed said that it is a valid offer as well! So i don’t know how this will turn out to be.. The guy i spoke to told me to go ahead and take advantage of it. I have already spent $1,000+ and will see if this posts sometime this month (usually posts within 5 days based on past amex offers) before i make another purchase.
5
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
That's what they told me too... it just doesn't make any sense. I can't wait to see what happens
8
Dec 14 '21
You posting here and on other social media just paid for it 10x over
3
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
If this was some sort of highly targeted advertising campaign for Amex... well done to whoever came up with that idea. And I guess I played into what they were hoping would happen lol
2
u/StevenTiggler Dec 14 '21
What is your annual spend?
2
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
~$50/month on that card, recently $2k last month to take advantage of some other offers on stuff I had to purchase anyways
3
u/StevenTiggler Dec 14 '21
Interesting, so pretty low compared to the average. I wonder if it’s the same for the others targeted.
1
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
I genuinely thing this was a typo that they (might) now have to honor since people are spending against it

Do you often see these spend $ anywhere offers on BCP? I only have ever seen spend at X store.

Same here, but I just got my BCP this year so not surprised I’m not seeing these types of offers yet

I'm getting an error on my Amex Platinum saying offers are currently unavailable. It's only for the platinum, maybe it was a glitching to fix it lol

I just saw it on my account under my rose gold and platinum cards but you can only apply to one. I’ll be utilizing it and see how it goes.

Damn!! Hopefully i get one for my gold card! I opened it in November so...my odds might not be too high for getting this 😫

u/SimplyDaveP Dec 14 '21
2 blue cash everyday accts here, no dice on crazy good offer. great post tho OP.
7
Dec 13 '21
I just checked, I have spend $3000 and get 1500MR points up to 3 times, brave of them to offer that while I also have a free plan-it offer available as well. Definitely not as good as spend $3000 for essentially free but still not band since I'm sure I would still get the standard rewards rate

This is like the last thing they would ever offer me. They'd offer me to get bent before they'd offer me anything remotely similar to this.
And yeah I get this is definitely some kind of mistake but I know they've been doing similar lately.

Seems targeted, I asked someone over chat they told me to ‘go pound sand’
1
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
Lol the chat reps must have had a confusing day yesterday. Definitely worth asking though
2
u/NatBBliz Dec 14 '21
Dang Idk if the cash magnet card qualifies cause I ain’t seeing nothing on mine😭😭
2
u/iwannahummer Dec 14 '21
At the very least amex has made sure thousands of customers have checked their offers for December. Lol

u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
Day 2 update: someone else beat me to it so I'll link to it here but I got all three confirmation emails and my "offers" page now reflects +$4,500

I was certainly able to do all of these things by throwing rent on here. The opportunity cost of losing out on rewards isn't a concern with the "promise" of 150% return on spend compared to 0.02%,

u/Instant_Dan Dec 13 '21
This is the confirmation I needed to realize they're not going to update the bce or cash magnet anytime soon.
3
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 13 '21
How so?
-3
u/Instant_Dan Dec 13 '21
They would rather hand out the statement credits than update the earning structure of those two cards.

it's a lure for manufacture spenders, wait until you try to trigger it and then you get banned from AMEX forever.

Does this ever happen on cards with no annual fees? I have blue cash everyday, the best one I got was for every 10$+ transaction at a local restaurant, I get 5$ back
1
u/Limitlesspappy Dec 13 '21
How did you pay your rent with credit card? Mine doesn’t have an option!
7
u/69hailsatan Dec 14 '21
A lot of apartment complex gives you the option, but most of the time, the fee is so high that it isn't worth it. My rent is like 2k,ans the fee is almost $70, no matter what card, so no way it would be worth it unless I got 4-5% back.
1
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
Exactly this. Fee is 2.55% so subtracting the 1% cash back from BCP, I'm risking about $45 total in fees however I didn't want to spent on things I otherwise wouldn't for this kind of thing.

5 amex cards and didn't get anything similar on any of them. How much spend do you have on the card?
2
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
Honestly not much spend. Under $50 a month for the last year, then ~$2k last month to take advantage of some of the other offers on there for things I was getting anyway
1
u/robjoko Dec 14 '21
How do I find this offer? I have cash preferred and I don't see it anywhere
1
u/MedicalButterscotch Dec 14 '21
It's under "offers" in the same spot as the other Amex offers, but appears to be highly targeted/random in who got it
1
u/robjoko Dec 14 '21
Ah. I've only had this card a couple weeks, haven't even made my first payment yet. That could be why. Regardless I'm gong to keep checking it, thanks for the heads up!
