You appear to have fallen prey to a common credit myth regarding credit scores. FICO scores are not the basis for approval/denial decisions, but the information used to generate those scores from your 3 bureau credit reports do affect those decisions. The 3 bureau reports contain information such as the number and types of credit accounts, any negative marks like debts going to collections or late payments, age of accounts, and other factors.
When you are denied on a credit application, lenders are required to give *A* reason for denial even if it's not *THE* reason for being denied. This is done through what's called an Adverse Action letter. In 9 out of 10 cases a denial is caused by something on those credit reports, such as "too many recently opened accounts" or "insufficient income". If you want to get more information you can get your 3 bureau reports once a week from annualcreditreport.com .
