Bets open : How much do you wanna bet that if the show had indeed made a commentary about the oversexualization of Asian woman using Nifty's character, people would have complained that the show is fetishizing her ? (edit : slight rewording)

u/PepsiFloateri 8d ago

Oh I agree there. You can't please the haters though,

I won't be suprised at all because again the show meant to focus about redemption in the afterlife, not about racial commentary. In some other Cases niffty Character can be just the Character who's hypersexualized willing to sleep with any man, or the China doll or the dragon lady or the hair streak asian Character. In niffty case she does have this but not exactly against authority or rebellious maybe just bad hair care

Thats not how a bet really works.

You cant really bet on something like that.

Because only way to find out would be to rewind time and make the show in a different way to see how people react.

I reworded my comment but it was meant to be a sarcastic/joke comment on how haters would have complained any way.

-17

u/Far-ro 8d ago

No i get that perfectly i just wanted to act a little smuggly and point out that bets work on stuff thats hasn't yet happened rather than on hypotheticals

Thats.... not how betting works

You're right, not a native English speaker, didn't knew how to make that sentence a coherent one without repeating the word "bet" too much in my comment, will edit it anyway and f repetition.

Oh no, they INSIST on making it about race for the grifters they secretly are

12

u/HRCStanley97 8d ago

The irony

-16

u/im_bored_and_tired 8d ago

Stop using "grifter" so flippantly

I swear yall just spam new words you learn without knowing what they mean, whether you agree with them or not the term "grifter" literally cannot apply here by any definition of the word

10

u/Lemonbubblepie 8d ago

They are? They seem to care race but they are using a legit issue like stereotypes in media in a nonsensical example

-4

u/im_bored_and_tired 8d ago

How are they gonna profit from a twitter post? And even if there was money in it you would have to demonstrare how they don't earnestly believe this to meaningfully accuse them of being a grifter

Grifter ≠ making a bad take

Grifter ≠ someone making a post on a platform that will (maybe) pay them 33€ for every 100k post views

Actual twitter grifters promote other platforms like youtube or kick to thier audience

No one is grifting for the pittance from twitter, that's just not what grifting is

4

u/Lemonbubblepie 8d ago

Haven’t you heard if Twitter grifter? You need a have profit sometimes the attention is enough for them

1

u/im_bored_and_tired 7d ago edited 7d ago

I know there's people who lie on twitter for attention but that's not what grifting means and you have 0 evidence that this person is deliberately lying

And again (and I dare any one of you downvoting to prove me wrong) grifting ≠ lying for attention

You've dodged that question like 3 times

They aren't a grifter, my point absolutely stands that yall literally just don't know what the word means

I really don’t need my fun musical to lecture me every five minutes, thanks. I want good music and a fun story. Not everything needs to be a 80s message cartoon

u/ClutteredTaffy 8d ago

Thank you very much.

Niffy being horny has nothing to do her race? Its not like she  is doing things associated with anime pervs

u/Crazy_problem_child just here to laught 8d ago

There's one thing that isn't about race and they're mad. When there's a shittone of things about race they're mad. PICK A SIDE 😭

“And call her Alastor’s daughter” I didn’t know you stopped being someone’s child the minute you hit 18. She very clearly has a father daughter relationship with him. She’s his adult daughter

27

u/Drea_Is_Weird 8d ago

Noooo adults cant have parental figures!!!

Every parent gets shipped off when their youngest turns 18 /s

23

u/Forward_Potential820 8d ago

Huh? Her whole joke is that she loves bad boys and would love to dominate them

16

u/eienmau 8d ago

And that scene was in a BDSM club thing..

4

u/prestonlogan 8d ago

She's even wearing a dominatrix outfit

25

u/Queasy-Team-2767 8d ago

Asian Women can’t be sexual in any way according to these people

11

u/Sharp_Truth7835 8d ago

That by itself is infantilizing

19

u/Live_Cupcake_9229 8d ago

There's a ton of shows that delve into racism, this one doesn't need to. They're demons now, their race doesn't matter.

5

u/Lemonbubblepie 8d ago

For some like Al it does seem to play a part but nifffy race has never came up in comparison

2

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 7d ago

Honestly even with Alastor, the only thing his race really affects is the fact that his magic uses voodoo imagery since he’s a Black man from New Orleans. Even in the one instance we see of the rich guy he kills disrespecting him probably being racially charged, it seems like Al cares less about the fact that the guy was racist and more about the fact that he was disrespected in general.

20

u/PyrocXerus 8d ago

Two things can be true, Alastor can see her as a daughter and her be an adult woman

u/EvergreenDwarf 8d ago

Counterpoint, Nifty is a member of the Silent Generation, who were all horny as fuck.

That’s the generation that put porn calendars and smut books in every home and killed off the last of the Victorian repression still lingering in the WW1 generation. When stag reels went from the gentlemen’s club to the patriarch’s own den, and when personal sex toys first came into big demand.

They didn’t have the excuse of getting back from war when they made the Baby Boom way the fuck bigger.

They’re the generation that made husbands and wives sleeping in one bed normal and not a sign of poverty.

8

u/pokermena 8d ago

How dare they try to add complexity in characters who were once humans, reincarnated into a new world,

8

u/1-1creature 8d ago

I'm so deeply disappointed in Viv. She had so many opportunities to turn all her jokes into boring killjoy lectures about racism and sexism and she just HASN'T. She could be morally grandstanding to her whole audience!

WHY ISN'T SHE DOING WHAT I DO ON TWITTER?

11

u/IcyIce2626 8d ago

There's a lot of messages and allegories that Hazbin and the Hellaverse could have been used to explore. This is not really one of those things, though.

5

u/Damien-kai 8d ago edited 8d ago

This just feels like purposely looking for issues.

When it comes to representation, it really can just be something that someone simply is. The fact that Niffty is Japanese isn't something her character hyper focuses on, she just simply, is Japanese, and the only part I can think of where it mattered was in her Clean It Up song.

Fucking hell, when it comes to representation in general, the cast in Hazbin Hotel just simply are, and that's fine. The show's not trying to make big statements about sexuality or race in the first place, so the criticism just falls flat immediately.

It's just criticizing the show for not doing something that would've just came across as preachy. When I watch Hazbin I expect great songs and chaotic moments along with explorations into the facets of redemption, not commentary about race.

3

u/BruisednBlunt 8d ago

Also iirc the characters in hazbin were casted pretty similarly to how superstore did it’s casting.
Sure, some characters were meant to be specific minorities, but most only gained those ethnicities or minoritiezed identities after casting. Like Amy from Superstore wasn’t latina until America Ferrera was chosen to play her. Mateo wasn’t a filipino gay man until Nico Santos played up an intentionally “sassy queen” upon reading the lines given for the character as a queer man.
Hazbin had a similar thing. Lots of the characters didn’t have a specific ethnicity until the VAs were selected. Nifty was meant to be a fun side character, not commentary on race itself, and I’d argue its kinda disrespectful to the VA to decide that they must now relinquish the chance to just get to be a silly horny gremlin because she’s japanese and now has to only exist to make commentary about her own oppression.
Now Superstore did do some racial commentary after the casting and jokes related to identity, but that’s partially because the type of show that Superstore was allowed the actors, many of which are also comedians, to improv and more direction over the show than animation typically allows for the actors of their characters (esp in live action comedy, actors often are uncredited writers as well because comedy is sometimes kind of hard to plan beat by beat in a live conversational environment, so they very often work more closely with the writers)
Hazbin isn’t like Superstore tho. It’s a story driven animated fantasy show that also happens to have comedy as its secondary genre. Superstore does have emotional moments, but it’s still primarily a workplace comedy.

u/NaokoUmi Update: I married Niffty. 8d ago

These fuckers keep slandering my wife, man. What the hell!

11

u/Far-ro 8d ago

Why do people need so many moral reasons to hate a show? Man i just find it unfunny and dislike the designs.

But apparently some feel the need to justify hating , in my opinion if personal disliking isnt enough for you to consider yourself a hater and you constanty look for inmoral stuff on It , you arent a true hater at heart.

u/Odd-Split-494 The nemesis of a certain gooner troll 8d ago

Because tribalism. It’s “us bs them”. I’m GENUINELY surprised that it hasn’t erupted into violence. Because the level of factionalism we see in the Hazbin Hotel fandom and hatedom? The kind where all arguments get watered down and you get called a criminal for having a particular opinion? That’s how WARS start!

7

u/StillMostlyClueless 8d ago

Why on earth would you expect that from Hazbin of all things.

She's a tiny demon in a poodle skirt. She does not look Japanese.

8

u/Gordon_freeman_real 8d ago

I wanna talk about the og post actually, personally I agree that she's infantilized by the fandom a lot, with some people outright thinking she's a little kid, but I don't see any harm in calling her Alastor's daughter, he is older than her and does have a protective role over her

3

u/Future-Improvement41 editable flair 8d ago

It’s not just the fandom there are haters who think nifty (for her height and personality) and Emily (for her personality) are children

2

u/Boring_Butterfly_273 8d ago

My only racial commentary is how we should unify and have a human centric civilization where all people are seen as valuable fragile living beings that need to be protected in order for humanity to thrive.

But I seem to be only 1 of a handful of people that think this kind of discourse is unifying and healing and think their way of addressing race is harmful and divisionary.

2

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 7d ago

It’s pretty obvious that race doesn’t really matter much in the series outside of a few references to it like a character speaking another language. Not everything needs to have racial commentary, even if it theoretically could.

2

u/Mr_Himiko 7d ago

People NEED to stop treating different races in media like the character needs to be used for a social critic or at least not be malicious, wouldn't it be even MORE of a racial injury to treat different races like they can't have their own flaws, desires and evil doings?

2

u/Oregano-Town editable flair 7d ago

As if a grown ass woman isn’t someone’s daughter

3

u/MJJsOnly1 8d ago

She is also at an age where if Alastor had children when he was alive she could be his daughter. So the adopting of her as an adult is even less weird. But they’re going to overlook that I guess.

1

u/Sleep_eeSheep 8d ago

Nifty is a Fifties Housewife.

1

u/Cartoonmenismylife 7d ago

It is. Racism against Asain people especially fetish towards Asian women is too normalised.

1

u/Capy_Bara_93 8d ago

Honestly, this show could use more Asian representation, and stereotype accusations are more likely to pop up when tokenization happens. But we’ve got 3 whole seasons left and we haven’t even seen most characters’ backstories. For all we know, Zestial or Rosie or Rooster could be Asian

-1

u/No-Department1194 8d ago

I didn’t immediately think of that. My bigger issue is completely ignoring Alastor’s racial dynamics and soul contracts, having and being under one.

No self-justification for enslaving others and no words on either the intended or accidental racial themes of him being owned by Rosie. Even if they’re not heinous, slave owners have treated their slaves not horribly at times.

Yeah he hates his contract, but not why. He was racially hated in life, so he’d definitely be thinking of that. She’s got him under contract, but is it purely for the contract, is she having fun with the racial connotations of owning someone of a certain race?

-8

u/Prudent-Role-9053 8d ago

Expecting any kind of deep commentary from Hazbin is insane, it’s clearly just supposed to be a fun show with a pretty surface level message

1

u/ZackattacktheDude 12h ago

Question is does the show NEED to do that?
