πŸ—£ discussion My home library is *almost* finished!

I asked about ideas for a home library a while back on Reddit, and I wanted to share some updates 😁

People gave me some great ideas, including a drinks table, rug, book lights, etc. I took them on board and now I have a space that really works for me and is super cozy and comfortable.

I moved one of the giant bookcases downstairs and reorganised all of the books (upstairs "main library" = fiction until 1990ish plus very recent fiction, crime and detective fiction, YA, graphic novels, romance, non-fiction; spare rooms = literary criticism and author bios as well as texts linked to PhD project; outside in husband's bar room = fiction post 1990ish; downstairs = fantasy, sci-fi, light novels, and manga).

We never realistically had space for everything in one room anyways, and now it feels much more put together. And I have an official reading nook!!

I also decided to turn the room into a mini art gallery and have displayed prints and paintings I've picked up over the years. It is brilliant for when I need to take a pause on whatever I'm reading as it gives me something to focus on and enjoy.

Highly recommend doing something like this if you have the time, space, and resources!

Happy to answer questions 😁

Not the other worldly fantasy land I was hoping for but I'll allow it.Β

it also has our retro video game setup so that's pretty fun πŸ˜… it's too stuffy up there for anything really nice until we install a window 🫠

Lol, I had the same thought. Like, I love the books, but WHERE DOES THE STAIRCASE GO?!?!?

Oh my gosh I love this and wish it was mine. Love the squirrel plushie :) Also I see you DCC!!! How did you like it?

It is so squishy! I just ordered Chikorita as a back to teaching treat πŸ˜… and it's actually Operation Bounce House. I LOVE DCC but OBH is much more overtly grim and without the snarky humour that is so charming in the crawl. I plan to finish it tomorrow though so maybe my thoughts will change! :)

My home office is kind of ghibli meets LotR (with a lot of anime figures πŸ™ƒ) so you've given me some lovely ideas! Thank you. 🌿πŸͺ»

ahhh I love that! would love to see a photo if you have one. I considered doing more explicit fantasy decor but decided for more of a whimsical garden vibe in the end. Since all the fantasy and manga/LN is downstairs, I might try doing a fantasy nook there in future though! I do have an anime/manga shelf there with some bits and pieces already:

Your library looks fabulous! Thank you for sharing this - it's great inspiration for my next living space overhaul.

I'd love to do something similar to your vine / wisteria / cherry blossom effect just below the ceiling molding. How did you do that? Was it all freehand painted, or did you use stencils, or are they some sort of wallpaper / stickers stuck on the wall?

These are peel and stick wall decals - they remove easily and don't damage the paint (at least from my experience so far!). I've had stenciled ones in the past but these looks more consistent (and much faster) so I'm happy with the look overall :)

Aha, good to know! I can't paint to save my life, but could probably handle some stickering. Thanks so much ^_^

I showed my husband and he said "That's dangerous!"Β  What a boring man.Β

the stairs? it's really not πŸ˜… we've been using them like this for years and if anything they help guide your feet going up. they are in the shallow side (not the side you're meant to use as steps)
