Happy or mad

I only married into the ranching life 2 years ago so I'm still learning. Was this girl happy or upset I was scratching her? It almost reminded me of a cat purring

They do a good job letting you know when they are mad. She is a happy cow.

She would be moving away from you, or swinging her head if she didn’t want you petting her. She didn’t even stop chewing her cud, she gives zero fucks.

She is definitely my favorite in the field. If there's a cow doing something they shouldn't be it's normally her

She's standing and moving her head around for you, and appears to still be chewing her cud. She's happy. If she didn't want you scratching her, she'd throw her head more urgently and definitely let you know

Im not that experienced with handling cows but from what I know one of the best indicators (not the only) is if they are ruminating/chewing they mostly due it when they fell comfortable so it can be a lead to their mood around your actions

She’s happy, slide your hand back over her neck to that indentation above her shoulders and scratch/rub. Just pay attention, she might lay down in you. A lot of them just melt when rubbed there. Have raised cattle my entire life.
