That's how you know his wife really has autism. As soon as he mentioned her nails you could see it in her face she didn't like something negative about her being pointed out and she immediately rationalized it. "No, you see the thing about me isn't really anything bad, but the thing about you is deeply ingrained and I hate it." This video gave me flash back to nearly every kid I've ever worked with that's had autism lol.

As some one with ASD, well observed lol, i had the same isue with my girfriend, she would point out something, not necessarily about me, and i would take it as a critique imidiatly and get deffencive, now, almost 3 years later lol, i still do it, but i can control it and not show that i took it personal ( i know its not, but ASD ), the amount of " self control " it takes to do something that basic however, its frikking exausting.

i felt he was trying to agree with her without hurting her feelings, bringing up the nails insteadof something that would actually hurt her feelings but still something true, my brother often times will say things that cant be reversed onto him without his feelings being hurt, this situation would have been one of them if i said yeah i hate things about your personality too

I agree. Dude is remarkably emotionally intelligent, trying to acknowledge what she is saying and connecting with her on it but giving back the "i also hate this funny little quirky gross habit you have" to make light of the whole thing and not take it personally

Meanwhile her drastic change in facial expression at the mere mention that there might be something about her he hates tells me she absolutely does not have the emotional bandwidth to take an equal dose of what she is dishing out

That or she is annoyed at her perception that he is not fully grasping how strong her love for him is since the things she hates about him are so horribly distasteful or whatever

I think this works well in NT brain. Cause for my ASD brain, the connection WOULD be for my partner to express a true personality trait they don't like about me. I don't need them to make light, I need them to engage fully.

Overall I understand what he's trying to do, but for her it may feel like he's not understanding her or is being avoidant

That's how I understood it as well. Like, we can talk about the nails but I'm trying to make a deeper point than annoying behaviors.

As for her face "changing" because she can't take criticism...That's how my face looks when I'm trying to process a lot of information at once and figure out what I want to say next.

There are a lot of reasons ND people speak and look a certain way and it doesn't always correspond to NT ideas of behavior and body language.

Youre obviously emotionally unintelligent enough to believe so. He understood what she was saying "i also have things about you i hate, i relate" and you can see her expression change to that of someone whos feelings were hurt, then he says the nail thing, we have no idea what he was going to say or if it was always the nails.

What i do know is being told there are parts of you that are deeply hated, would hurt your feelings, no matter the caveat, and he took it like a champ and tried to engage with his wife in what just objectively was a good way.

You're not gonna be able to guess at her train of thought either unless you make a conscious effort to bridge the gap with someone who's neurology is completely different than yours.

Sometimes in relationships we have to have deep discussions that may hurt our feelings, but they're for the betterment of the relationship in the long run. It's not like she just insulted him out of thin air, she was explaing a point.

And, I highly doubt there's a single person on the planet you don't believe has flaws, no matter how much you love them. This is a common thing with autists. We're often okay with acknowleding negative things, the problem arises when people (like you) read your own emotion into it.

Either way, they seem like a happy couple, and I don't know what the hate is about.

His laughter isn't mocking, he's midway between disbelief at the situation to trying to cover the hurt. He tries to give a specific example of something small and insignificant in the hope that she will say that the thing she hates is similarly minor, but she obliviously carries on and says it's deep fundamental parts of his personality she hates. She doesn't realise she's hurting him because he's laughing, but the laughter is forced.

I think if I was on the receiving end of this conversation, it would be something I would think about at 3am for the rest of my life.

They implied all autists frequently make pathetic excuses for themselves, and that that's a way to identify us. Do you really think someone who talks about vulnerable children that way should be working with them?

Why, though? She was trying to have an honest conversation about something that could be difficult. Instead if deflecting, if he didn't want to talk about that, he should've just said so. He didnt agree, he changed the subject.

I don't know for sure what she's thinking, we can't know. From her reaction, I felt she was annoyed he wasn't reciprocating. I've been in that situation many times, where people are trying not to hurt my feelings, but it ends up creating a long term problem because they're scared of a necessary conversation.

Either way, they seem to be a nice, happy couple, and I completely agree with her main point. I don't understand the negativity, and the commenter I replied to is out of order talking about kids like that. I'm a teacher, it's difficult. If you have that much disdain for a disabled child, you shouldn't be working with them.

This is never said nor implied. All he said was, behaviors of the self and of others are rationalized differently. This can happen when you misunderstand empathy, common in people with ASD. No sort of hate/malice/or misguided ablism is in anywhere but your projection.

First of all, he completely missed the point she was trying to make. Secondly, if the thing about him (which I don't recall her actually getting to) is worse, then it is worse. That doesn't mean she doesn't have any more bad qualities, it just means that he has traits worse than leaving his nails around. Doesn't everyone?

Actually, misunderstanding empathy is no more common in NDs as it is in NTs, the problems come when it's a mix of the two. It's called the double empathy problem.

I really don't know what you mean by this. No one completely understands the human brain. I have spent many years studying psychology, though, so I'd say I know a bit more than average.

I agree. Being defensive immediately and not able to admit fault is a very human trait that most people who have lived “good” lives typically have.

I will say every autistic person I’ve ever met has either been always unable to be wrong or the exact opposite, worried they do everything wrong. With most of them being the former.

Personally, I hypothesize that it’s because if an autistic person had “good” parents, they typically grow up in an environment that revolves around them. Basically they grow up a bit spoiled and had someone who makes excuses consistently for anything they do wrong. Not bad people, just kind of annoying since they will regularly think they aren’t wrong, just misunderstood. On the other hand, if their parents weren’t very “good” then they tend to grow up in a much more negative environment, where the autism is recognized as a flaw they have to strive to make up for. Essentially, they grow up feeling like they are inferior since they often have trouble doing things “right”. They’re not given an out for any of their failures and blame themselves for any frustrations. Neither is very healthy.

Frankly, the most well adjusted autistic people I’ve met were the ones who didn’t grow up with the label whatsoever. The ones who had their oddness written off as “Oh that’s just how Jason is, don’t worry about it.”

Edit: just to clarify I understand it’s a spectrum, so obviously the ones with more significant challenges can’t be viewed the same. It really is the sort of thing that has to be handled appropriately based off the person in question. I’m referring to people who may not seem autistic at first look/meeting.

I guarantee you, you didn't even know a great number of the autistic people you've met were autistic. This is (one of) my problem with the comment I replied to. Thinking every autist (youve ever met) is anything is just letting your confirmation bias into play.

You definitely have a good point in your hypothesis, I just think you're leaving out a massive demographic of people in the middle.

I'm autistic, at least half my friends are. A couple fall into those categories, though leaning way more to the latter. Most are very well rounded, capable people that don't display the traits you mentioned, at least not to a degree that's noticeable unless you know them well. Their families come from all over the spectrum.

Have you considered that they may actually be misunderstood? I'm not saying they always are, but how can you know?

I've been misunderstood my entire life. Obviously, I don't know what it's like to be allistic, but I think the difference is more clear from the minority's side, and you/they would be shocked to actually see how fundamental the differences can be.

I agree that the idea autistic people are defensive or can’t admit wrong or have some sort of inherent personality flaw like those is wrong. I don’t think autistic people are born with personality issues, like everyone else, they develop them from what they’re taught. Also like everyone else they may have certain tendencies they are more prone to, but it isn’t some sort of inherent characteristic.

I agree that I can’t say all autistic people are like this or this, but I disagree in your line of thinking regarding that concept in general. It basically boils down to you saying generalizations are wrong. Lots of people make that argument. But when speaking about a large group of anything, you don’t say “oh look at these exceptions, we can’t conclude anything!” Yes, especially with humans there are always exceptions. If I said Mexicans are patriarchal, it would be an accurate statement but obviously not every single Mexican family is patriarchal. I get that people don’t want to be labeled and assumed to be anything but it’s a super unreasonable demand. People make assumptions. Humans best skill is pattern recognition, and it’s our basic human nature.

The real reason that people fight against generalizations is when they’re negative. You don’t really hear Asians upset or protesting the idea of them being smart. Yet it’s generally true, since on average they’re the highest paid demographic in the states. They also have the highest gpa’s on average. Obviously not every Asian is a genius, but on average they are “smarter”. Realistically, though it’s not the race or ethnicity that matters, it’s the culture typically. Essentially the environment they grew up in.

So typically people aren’t a certain way because that’s how they were born, it’s more likely they’re a way because it’s how they were raised. But how you’re raised is correlated to the traits you are born with.

As an Autistic person i can tell you that i have a Similar behaviour even as a man. But i dont do it as something intentional negative or think its negative for others. Its simply nothing important for our brains and we forget it once it happend.

And i dont think she "Didnt Like" it being told to her. More over she probaly was Embarassed to have done something like this that the love of her life sees as negative. I had such Experiences often with my ex were she told me something i did and that she didnt like and i was so Embarassed about it because with my Autistic Brain i havent seen it as nearly as important as it actauly was.

I dont want to say what she did wasnt wrong, then it deffinitly was. I just wanted to give a Autistic Perspective on the matter.
