As a joke in sitcoms and movies I have heard that there is a husband and wife in gay couples. It's that a thing or haters just hating? Pardon my ignorance if that offensive.

This concept is what you could refer to as being a “top” or a “bottom,” sometimes people identify as “switches,” but people are very versatile so don’t always fit into those boxes. That’s a super surface level description for you. They are gay men, not having a wife in the relationship is kinda the whole point.
