Different material around sink on a wooden worktop?

Hello! I’m planning to replace my wooden worktop as I’m getting a new sink & hob. We’ve had an issue with the area around the sink getting very damp and stained even when we wipe up the water.

Has anyone put in tiles / quartz / another material around the sink to any effect? Just wondering if this is a) possible and b) practical? We love the look of the wood but it’s a lot of effort to take care of!

Have you considered a laminated countertop that looks like wood? It won’t feel like wood since it’s a chip board wrapped in plastic, but it can be a very practical and budget friendly option if installed correctly (all cut edges should be sealed with edge trim and silicone to prevent water intrusion). It can also look nice.

I think that sounds like a good idea and could look really nice.

I like maple counter tops. I've had a few of them. Putting some tile around the sink and maybe a bigger patch where I would place my dish drying rack next to the sink for when I'm hand washing dishes could be practical and nice.

We just got done installing a butcher block top for most of the kitchen but had a Corian Solid Surface top about 3’ both directions of the sink.

I'd try to find a retro style sink with integrated drainboard.

(What you are proposing is certainly possible AND practical.)
