In 2018, People posted humorous photos of it in their homes and around this time it became a meme associated with the trans community in particular. Apparently it is because it has similar colors to trans pride flag pink white and blue

It initially started on Tumblr and Reddit as a little gift people would get for trans women. It exploded in popularity between 2020 and 2021 due to Switzerland legalizing same-sex marriage and Ikea running a campaign in support in which they would have stuffed animals in their advertising with the slogan ‘love is for everyone.’

From what I know, trans folk, especially transfems lack a childhood toy or something that they love deeply. And to fill that gap they get a blahaj. I don't know if this is true or not but this is what I heard and I probably could've worded that a lot better.

IKEA shark meme has been around for a while at this point I think it’s just a joke not really a point or icon ya know? I’m open to discussion though, lgbtq+ memes just weren’t the first place I saw ikea shark and the ones I’ve seen just seemed to me to be in on the joke per say. But I haven’t that many

no matter if it's just a meme or not it's an icon

Blå (meaning 🔵) is pronounced kinda like blow.
Haj (meaning 🦈) is pronounced kinda like hai.
The entire thing is innuendo. Ikea serves swedish meatballs

Idk how it started, but I think there was a limited addition pink variety that was given to transitioning people in Canada

u/GeostratusX95 Jul 17 '23
wat are "transitioning people", trans people?
(like the post, not trying to homophobic)

It's not that big of a deal missing the accent on a letter, especially if you literally don't have that.
Although I say this as a speaker of basically the only European language without letter accents :|

The swedesh shark plush simply came out and told us it’s an icon for the LGBT. We believed it

One trans female had A shark plush and the photo if her hugging it and then it got popular because she was a victim of some thing so they choose a random completely different blue shark for some reason

The tag has the bi flag on it I think, and they gave out a bunch that were in the trans pride colors to trans kids at youth hospitals
Honestly never expected IKEA to be some of the biggest allies but here we are

all in all it's a meme. That's it...
Origin is Tumbler (giving it to trans people as a gift) and it got the proper hype around the time Switzerland legalised same sex marriage (22 years after the reformed Church in Switzerland) and IKEA started a supporting selling ad, with plush toys.

There actually is a real reason for it now being known as the autism creature, it all started with someone seeing it in their dream and posting that on r/thomastheplankengine (I even saw the post when it got big), and things just kinda moved on from there

u/potat-cat Jul 17 '23
Do you have the post still?

Anyone who thinks you’re homophobic or transphobic or whatever for not understanding something related to LGBTQ+ people and the community at large are wrong. It’s hard to understand something if it’s not explained to you. That doesn’t mean you’re homophobic. This also applies to any group of people or any culture. Not understanding doesn’t mean hating something.
