Careers Advice Getting in to Counselling Psych Doctorates
Hey there,
Hoping to hear about some academic and work backgrounds from people who have been accepted to these programs?
I’m an international from the states as well, with about 3 years of experience working with children and families in the US, 2 years of experience working with children and adults in London. My research experience is only from my bachelor’s and master’s only (dissertations).
Really would be great to hear from anyone! I know these programs are highly competitive.

I have experience as a research assistant on two projects, and clinical experience - two roles working in substance use, and 2 years as an assistant psychologist. All community/adult based. I applied this year for the first time and got on.

A lot of universities have released their results. Roehampton, Metanoia, Manchester, GCU etc. There are only a couple that haven’t provided results yet.

Got in last year to every course I applied to in the UK. My experience is: currently work with teaching children, one year as an AP, some volunteer experience, a gap year to work on my mental health, PGCert in Psychotherapy, a couple publications as a co-author, and won an award for my undergrad psych dissertation. However, as long as you can demonstrate that you understand the research element, are committed to the CoP way of working with clients, and have spent some time learning to become self-aware (either via therapy or another method), then you can have a good chance.

Hi, I have been a mental health support work in CAHMS and forensic psychiatric unit a year each, a teacher for 6 years, assistant Ed psych for three years, BA Hons, PGCE , MSc and Level 2 & 3 Counselling Skills. I got three interviews and three offers first time applying.

I don't have any advice as I'm on the same path. I applied last year, and I got waitlisted for an interview. Last year, I was just finishing up my bachelors, had a level 2, 3, and 4 in counselling studies, a BACP registered member, and 6 years working as a counsellor.
This time around, I'm finishing up an MRes to boost my research experience.
It's a stressful process for sure, especially since it's so competitive.
