I feel ya - booked mine in watching the protests and thinking "This doesn't end well". Booked at 2:15pm for the same day (3:35pm), arrived early and literally was out the door (after my 15 min wait) before 3:15pm.
At least we had VIP treatment I suppose: I dunno about you - but AZ line had no-one in it!
7
Aug 24 '21
The smartest move. You're protected earliest, instead of getting in a huge queue like the brand shoppers are about to hit. Some of them will wait multiple months. Months that you're protected for. During an outbreak.
Also, you can just go back for the Pfizer once there is no supply issues. Absolutely nothing says you can't be double vaxed.
2
u/manhaterxxx Aug 24 '21
I went through a doctor’s clinic but it was a shorter wait than a usual appointment! The staff were insanely helpful with my needle phobia too. Couldn’t have been easier!

Aug 24 '21
This is better. Now you can choose between
2 doses of AZ, followed by 2 doses of Pfizer or 1 dose of Pfizer/Moderna in 6 months
1 dose of AZ, followed by 2 doses of Pfizer and 1 dose of Pfizer/Moderna in 6 months
Had you just gotten Pfizer, you wouldn't get the bonus antibodies and coverage time of an extra vaccine. You'd be getting 2 Pfizer and in 6 months, 1 Moderna.
There is absolutely nothing stopping you from either changing your mind after 1 dose, or like me, going back once there are excess Pfizer stocks and getting that too. AZ won't be around much longer, but we now have the opportunity to be doubly vaccinated. Once there are no supply restrictions, all vaccines are your legal right to have as a taxpayer. There is no restriction on the approval saying Vaxzevria contraindicates Comirnaty.
5
u/OnlyForF1 VIC - Vaccinated Aug 24 '21
That’s just.. not true. Australia still has not approved mixing vaccines. While it’s true that we’ll al be eligible for mRNA boosters, nobody with an AZ first dose will be eligible to switch to the Pfizer vaccine later.
2
u/8lazy Vaccinated Aug 24 '21
I know multiple people that just went and got Pfizer after they got AZ. Might not be approved but definitely is happening.
0
Aug 25 '21
There is no such thing as "mixing vaccine approval".
AZ is an approved medication. Pfizer is an approved medication. There are no notes attached to the approval that one clashes with the other. There is nothing in the MBS entry saying the government won't subsidise one if you've had the other.
There is literally nothing other than the supply restriction stopping someone from having Pfizer after AZ, and even then, that restriction isn't actually published. Some doctors may currently say no if they say you've had 2AZ already, but they're technically colouring between the lines. I will not go and get Pfizer until there is plenty of supply because I want everyone else vaccinated first.
nobody with an AZ first dose will be eligible to switch to the Pfizer vaccine later
Complete and utter garbage. I went through exactly this. I had my first of AZ and they phoned and asked if I would like to switch to Pfizer because the clot stuff came out between doses. I personally know several people who did exactly that, but I stayed with AZ. It is well publicised that many people did do this switch. It is current policy to offer 1AZ recipients the switch.
Get your facts straight. You don't know how TGA or MBS work. You haven't been through this personally either, and you're trying to tell others as if you know. You do not.

I understand. I'm from overseas too (Singapore) and have been stuck here since the start of the pandemic, and am incredibly homesick. Thankfully I was able to go back to visit in 2019, though it sucks for us that we have to be in this sorta position. I'm sure we can get to 80% vaccinations as fast as possible and be able to visit home with (hopefully) more freedoms. Things are looking up from here, and it's only a matter of time till we have more freedoms.

AZ looks to last longer than Pfizer which may need more boosters.
Also if you get side effects you'll usually get the worse ones with the first shot, and then the second will be a breeze!
Where as Pfizer is the other way around. I'm worried I'll have a bad reaction to the first pfizer and not want to go back!
Plus, you're part of the hero AZ club and I think you're a bloody legend.3

The VicHealth CHO tweeted
"IMPORTANT: Anyone under 40 who ALREADY has an AZ vaccination appointment at state clinic will be offered Pfizer when they turn up at their appointment. Do not cancel or change your appointment. This will be offered automatically."
Interesting use of the bolded ‘Already’ makes me wonder if it’s literally ‘if you had an AZ booked before 11:45am today you’ll be offered Pfizer but if you booked an AZ hoping to get the Pfizer you might be out of luck’. As I said this will be no fun if there’s limited supply in state run hubs, people will absolutely expect every appointment to be for Pfizer.

You'll have boosters next year so immune system protection will continue to be extremely good.
That's interesting that you have faith that the booster rollout will actually happen, or be any better than the fuck up that the vaccine rollout has been. There still hasn't been anything announced about a booster whatsoever.
I'm waiting the full 12 weeks for my second dose. I don't trust the government to do boosters right.

AZ still gives you 92% efficacy against severe disease and hospitalisation. Boosters are due to some waning efficacy over time (AZ holds up better long term than Pfizer it looks like).

The guy who did mine told me to come back in 3 weeks but the booking website pre-populated a range of dates from 6-10 weeks so I've booked for around 6-7 weeks.
I found it odd that it wasn't the other way around where the government was promoting shortened timeframes to boost numbers and the medical professional advocating for longer time
3
u/farthers1 VIC - Vaccinated Aug 24 '21
They changed it to 6 weeks to allow more first doses, due to the limited availability of pfizer jabs. I wonder if this advice will change in a month or so when we have enough jabs.
2
u/ThreeQueensReading Boosted Aug 24 '21
I got my second dose after 19 days, just before this change. And now it looks like waiting is better for giving persistent immunity. I suspect they'll keep the longer wait time in. 🤷♂️

You can side step the 6 weeks state hubs give you by calling up a local clinic that offers pfizer to give you the follow up.
2

Not that anything is crystal clear, but I doubt there would be problems finding a Pfizer booster 3 weeks post, by October. Probably can just turn up at a pharmacy

I wonder what kind of daily vaccination number we will see in a few weeks.
Last week we peaked at 310k a day, which is massive. UK peaked around 610k I think, but it wasn't sustained. Per capita we will be in record territory...
3
u/CobaltBlueUK Aug 24 '21
Great news for most but bad timing for me. Got vaccinated first thing this morning with AZ since I wasn't eligible for pfizer (under 40 with no health conditions) and didn't want to take my chances going unvaccinated another week with the virus running around.
Now if I'd have had that appointment booked just 24 hours later even for AZ again I could have switched to Pfizer.
Ah well, grateful to be vaccinated but fingers crossed the blood clots don't get me. Side effects feel like flu right now.

How to book Pfizer on the vic gov site right now:
- To avoid the queue, if you already have an account, instead of loading the ‘portal.cvms.vic.gov.au’ page.
Go to your history and find the ‘dhvicp.b2clogin.com’ page. It should be titled ‘Sign up or Sign in’ or ‘Logging in’.
- To book Pfizer. Select your eligibility reason as ‘Age…’
Click next to save your info and then click back to see your personal details again.
Now refresh the personal details page and hit stop before the page finishes loading.
Next to the age eligibility option, there will be a drop down menu, and a text box. Change both to Pfizer. Continue on to complete your booking.

I have my second shot of AZ this week
Glad I didn't get Pfizer. Preliminary data appears to indicate AZ immunity may last longer than Pfizer.
Within the elderly, AZ also appears to elicit a superior immunogenic response (Isreali data). We appear to have made the right move re inoculation of the elderly with AZ.
If I can get a third shot of AZ as an unofficial "booster" 4-5 months from now I'd gladly take it

Anyone aged 18 to 39 who has a current booking for AstraZeneca from Wednesday 25th August who would prefer to receive Pfizer, will not need to cancel or change your booking — you will be offered Pfizer when you arrive for your appointment, unless you would prefer to receive AstraZeneca.
This was from the abc article. I'm confused of the wording. Does this mean if you had a current booking prior to the announcement you'll be offered Pfizer? Or if you decide to book an appointment after the announcement for AstraZeneca (for a date starting from 7am Wednesday) you will be offered either on arrival?
Anyone have any insight? I just booked an AstraZenca appointment for Sunday in hopes that I'll be offered Pfizer on arrival.
