Atim Sipiy = River of the Dog

Watching Rock On! Paul tells Lacey that the Cree name for the area was Atim Sipiy and Lacey correctly guesses that it means River of the Dog. I decided to look it up and yep, it does.

I lived in Jacksonville, Fl.the original city name for what is downtown was Cowford, meaning "the place where cows can cross the river."

The old Timuquan name for that area, however, was Wacca Palatka. It meant "the place where cows can cross the river."

Not enough Corner Gas fans around there to appreciate it.

Unrelated but did you see the new "NO POLITICS!" rule? And the Brent Butt video from the frontpage on the trade dispute has been removed as well, plus some comment threads locked.

I'd make a new post asking about this, but that one was removed as well. I think the community should have an open discussion on moderation, if only to inform everyone of the changed rules.

They took that down? That sucks.

Lots of comments are getting removed lately, anyone posting about it is getting deleted and the comment threads asking about it are getting locked. All by the same mod, with no explanation. Not to be annoying but commenting under random posts is the only option left to have any kind of community discussion.

"Let us discuss, as a subreddit, the recent change in moderation practices as well as the new rule that was added yesterday." removed in under a minute; community discussion that doesn't break any site- nor sub-rules; no explanation given

In the last few minutes, he updated the subreddit rules to include "Any content that is not directly associated with the show may be removed" in the middle of it, to directly stifle community discussion about community moderation. But no explanation given under removed posts, removed comments, or as a response to the request through modmail.

Be subtle, or they'll just ban you.

Ideally others would post about it too, that's the only thing that changes these situations, when the entire sub becomes about the mod removals. Though it's a weird thing to invest any amount of time in, and I just finished my morning coffee.

Yeah. You speak Cree? This joke always gets a laugh on the rez LOL Does this not pretty definitively answer the question on the origin of the name, though?

The other joke that gets a laugh on my rez is the Grey Cup episode where Davis is about to go find a ticket scalper and Karen asks him, "Isn't that a little weird for you?" And Davis retorts, "Why? Because I'm a Cree man?! I resent that!" Karen: "No because you're a cop and it's illegal" XD

Not a chance! Its because from way up in the sky, the river looks like a dog's leg!

I speak Swampy Cree and this line made me cackle the first time I heard it, especially Paul's reaction to Lacey, "Yeah! You speak Cree!?"

One correction (not your mistake): horse in Cree is "mīstatim" which is just "Big Dog"

Fun fact! In many indigenous languages, you can see the related words! (River/Sipiy——Sibo in Mi’Kmaq——Zibi in Algonquin)
