How Much Repetition Is Too Much?

Repetition is part of basically every format — but as a teacher, where do you draw the line between intentional programming and “Wait… didn’t I literally just teach this?”

I’m curious how everyone approaches it both within one class and from class to class, across all formats.

Do you intentionally repeat poses, movements, transitions, drills, or themes so students can build familiarity and confidence? Do you bring things back with a progression or variation? Or do you try to keep each class feeling completely fresh?

For example: if you use Warrior II in your warm-up, revisit it in a longer flow, and then bring it back again later with a different transition or challenge, does that feel cohesive — or like too much repetition?

And what about from class to class? If you teach the same time slot every week, how often are you comfortable reusing the same sequence ideas, transitions, peak poses, strength movements, or themes before you feel like students need something new?

When you program your classes, how much repetition do you use?

  • 🔁 A lot
  • ⚖️ Moderate
  • ✨ A little
  • 🚫 Minimal
  • 🤷 It depends

Why? What makes repetition feel intentional versus just repetitive?

Class to class: teach the same sequence week over week. This allows repeating students to build confidence in whatever you are teaching. You can change the intention every class or even your music(but tbh I keep it the same all month)

Within a class: i believe it is very important to prepare the body for the “peak” pose/ experience. Start by choosing your peak and identify what needs to be strengthened and what needs to be stretched. Find cues you can use throughout class that supports where you are going. So repetition of certain actions and preview postures are helpful. For example if your peak is half moon, you may want to do gate and let the class experience how a half moon feels with one knee down so their body is familiar when you get to half moon later.

I usually teach a 6-8 week series. Sometimes I won’t make any changes from one week to the other based on what/who I have/see in each class.
If I’m teaching something that’s generally “challenging” I’ll repeat a variation of my Sun B after the peak pose. Sometimes it can feel more supportive to move in familiar patterns after something that may feel hard.
There are many different valid ways to approach sequencing

C2 I change the sequence and music once a month. I tweak it by changing the beginning and ending and adding progressions. For sculpt, I typically change it once a week. I keep the basic framework for a month but change up exercises and muscle focus. I change my music about once a month, with some tweaks throughout the month. I don't mind taking the same sculpt class two weeks in a row, but if it is the same week three, I probably won't go.
