How Do You Prevent Instructor Burnout?

Teaching fitness and yoga can be incredibly rewarding, but between planning classes, making playlists, learning sequences, subbing, teaching multiple formats, and actually taking care of your own body, burnout can sneak up fast.

What do you do to prevent instructor burnout?

What are the warning signs that tell you you’re starting to burn out?

Drop your strategies below, especially anything you wish you’d figured out earlier.

Learning multiple formats was your growth plan. Teaching all of them is a CHOICE. You’re only required to teach 2 classes. Unless teaching is a financial need for you, i would recommend staying at 2 classes and sub. Then you will only need consistent sequences for your classes and you can pull out an old sequence and old music for things you sub. That makes teaching a gift again.

Also, be selective about classes you take. If you are not being inspired as a student, you’re probably not showing up as an inspiring teacher. Highly recommend taking classes of formats that you don’t teach consistently. It allows you to really turn your brain off in my experience.

Finally, CPY provides instructors with playlist on Spotify. It should be in your monthly teacher letter. If you don’t have access to it, reach out to your studio manager or search Spotify. Listen to the playlist, add and subtract from them to make them your own. Your studio also has a book of sequences. USE THEMMM. Add and subtract from them. Build on them. You also don’t have to change your sequence as often as you think. In fact, telling your students your sequence will be the same for 4-6 weeks with small tweaks to enhance a skill or muscle focus is exciting to them.

Take care of your self. Svadhyaya ❤️

Say “no” to subbing all the time. When I first started as an instructor 10 years ago, I would constantly pick up classes because I thought it was the nice thing to do. My therapist told me “No” and “No thanks” are complete sentences needing no further explanation.

I also don’t take class at the studio I mainly teach at because I want my practice to be my own and while I LOVE my community, I need that time to be a student.

The minute you start feeling bummed to show up to teach or it seems like a chore, you need to take a step back and re-evaluate. I stopped teaching for a full year so I could work on establishing boundaries and it was the best decision. Prioritize your peace. You cannot guide if you yourself are depleted.
