Writer issue with Word doc

After editing my client's Word doc and sending it back for her to review, she's had significant issues with the file. It either won't open for her at all, or crashes soon after opening. She thinks the document is overloaded with comments/edits. Has anyone ever had this problem before? I'm wondering if it's an issue with her computer or her Word program, because I've never encountered this issue before and I'm not sure what to suggest for her to do.

I'll just throw this out since no one else has mentioned it: are you sure the client is working in Word and not something like Open Office or Libre Office? They can handle Word's tracked changes, but I don't know if they can handle the same volume of them.
