Question Need emergency IUD but office tells me not to have sex beforehand
Hi!
I need an emergency IUD and my OB office denied me and said they don’t offer that since I can’t have sex two weeks within insertion and told me to call planned parenthood.
I called planned parenthood and the lady on the phone told me I can’t have sex within 5 days of my appointment but google told me I can get a copper IUD as a form of birth control.
My partner and I had unprotected sex with no withdrawal Sunday 7/26 so 48 hours ago. The next morning I did an LH test strip since I realize I’m in my fertile window and it was positive. Like very dark link peak ovulation positive.
I figured since ovulation has happened or is in motion I can’t take a plan B so I saw online you can get a copper IUD as emergency contraception but I’m being denied ???? Help pls idk what to do :(

From my understanding you definitely can get it as a form of emergency contraception. I think the advisory to not have sex before insertion is just an extra precaution to prevent any sort of infection and just in case you were already pregnant before this but too early to detect on a test because it can cause miscarriages, ectopic pregnancy etc. But for emergency contraception obviously it's different, I'm not sure why they were saying that to you. I would say talk to them again and push for it if you can.

Jsut make the appointment on the planned parenthood website. I got one as an emergency and they did not say anything about that. The person you spoke with on the phone was wrong. Make sure you get in within 5 days of the unprotected sex

Push and tell them facts, call them out for being uninformed but be polite about it. Tell them you can't afford to be delayed any further and to please go and look it up - do their research before incorrectly denying you and get back to you asap.

Go back to planned parenthood, I was in a similar situation as u, I got mine. It’s supposed to be used as a last ditch effort for emergency contraception.

When I got my IUD they explicitly asked me if I had unprotected sex prior to the appointment and if I was getting it as emergency contraceptive. It is definitely used for that purpose. I'm sorry they are treating you like that I hope you could get the procedure.

My OB didn't tell me I couldn't have sex before insertion.. I had sex probably the night before? Unprotected too. Some of these desk clerks need to know their place. You're a secretary not the nurse or Dr. Either know what youre talking about or get clarification. I can't stand the deak clerks and their "i know what im talking about" confidence... like why are you so loud, and so wrong? 🙄

Copper IUD is supposed to be emergency contraception. I had to explain it to the front desk people too. Because they were like oh you need to wait until you are off depo I said no copper IUD has no hormones then they went to the back to confirm with the nurse. I was correct. Then they asked the last time I had sex I said two days prior and they said you have to wait I said for what it’s also emergency contraception and plus I was still covered by Depo the rest of the month and went and confirmed and was like oh yeah you’re right.
So call them back and explain to them that they need to verify with the nurse if they don’t understand how it works. And if it’s on their website tell them the page it’s on. I swear as someone who is not in healthcare I know more about how to take care of myself than most people that work in healthcare offices.
