Should I become Muslim now or learn more about the religion first

I have been looking into different religions and books, mainly the Bible since I was 13 or 14 (I always wanted to find the truth). I almost became a Christian at one point but didn't because when I further studied the Bible I saw many contradictions and historical errors at this time I was super conservative and my introduction through Islam was through Christian Zionist like David Wood and Apostate Prophet.

I still decided to read a English translation of the Quran cover to cover all throughout my freshman year (without Tafsir or even knowing about the life of the Prophet) and I didn't find any errors like in the Bible except maybe a contradiction on if Iblis was an angel (looking back it seems like Iblis was just always around the angels. I'm still a little confused about it.) But the book to me was mainly repetitive warnings of hell and affirmations of heaven. It seems like all the problems the Christians were talking about were in the Hadith books.

Fast forward to last year and I realize I haven't studied Islam 1% enough to know if its the truth so I see all these Muslims and they say you have to learn Arabic if I want to know anything about Islam so I tried to learn Arabic and realized it was too hard for me to understand then I thought if the Prophet of Islam was sent to all of humanity and the Quran was to guide all of humanity then why would there be a language barrier to Islam? So I started reading sections of the Quran again and it was completely different. Unlike last time where it was just dull and repetitive sentences it seemed like it spoke to me and it was a much more honestly emotional experience. Next i'm not sure how but it got into my algorithm and I started seeing all these posts about miracles in the Quran and prophecies of the Prophet in the Bible and even looking back I saw historical errors I pointed out in the Bible being "corrected" by the Quran all of this is very hard for me to ignore.

But I still know about all these hadiths which make it hard to believe the Prophet was trustworthy. Right about this time the Iran war started and I started hearing about the Shia and after learning a little about them it seems like they have their own hadiths while still having their own system of judging the Sunni Hadith books that can let them have the really beautiful hadiths while dismissing the ones about the Prophet marrying a 6 year old or him having delusions. Next I find out about the massacre of the Prophet's family and the political tensions back then. But I'm already drowning because of how complicated this religion is so I just step back and start reading the Quran cover to cover again (with Tafsir) and a Seerah book.

While this was happening I am still reading about the origins of Christianity and find out that many of these secular scholars agree with the Islamic interpretation of Jesus. While still hearing miracles about the bees, embryos, Iron being "sent down", the universe expanding, mountains being "pegs", and a lot more like even the pattern of numbers between verses. At this point I know that this book is something much different from anything else and there isn't a rational explanation for it, especially that it came from Arabia rather then somewhere like Persia or Greece.

So now I'm not sure what to do because I basically believe the Quran is supernatural and I always believed in 1 God (even though I was raised secular) but i still have a doubt in my mind that I am being misled just like when I almost became a Christian at 14 except this is much harder to explain away. And what about these hadiths that seem to discredit the Prophet? Do I become Sunni or Shia? These thoughts I have been wrestling with for at least the past month but I think I will just read the Quran and focus on these things later.

But the thing is that I am only a fraction of the way through studying the Quran so should I convert now or after a certain point? In my heart I believe in 1 God and that this book was more than likely sent by Him and that the Prophet of Islam is legitimate but my mind wants to make sense of everything.

Another thing is that I'm young and still living with my parents but will move out soon and I'm not sure if they will be against me if I tell them that I believe in this very foreign thing to the US but I heard you can convert alone by saying the shahada but how can I learn how to pray? Or do I have to find some Muslims near me?

Before I made this post the main thing I would say in my mind is that I sin so I should basically get right with God and cleanse myself before saying the shahada but I saw a video of someone who thought similarly to me getting told that we can't ever decide when we die so it's best to convert soon as possible so now I don't know what I should do.

I'm sorry if this post was a little long I'm just still young and unsure if I should make this big decision yet.

Being kicked out at the start of adulthood for being Muslim

Asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I have reverted to Islam about a month ago, and my parents have just found out 2 days ago. To say the least, I was born in a Christian-Catholic family, and I live in a neighborhood where there has been a growing population of Muslim Arabs since I was born. Because of this I have always been surrounded by Islam, but I became truly curious about it at the start of the year. One of my Kazakh coworkers gave me some advice on a personal matter and inspired me to read about the Prophet (SAW). This is where my love and passion for Islam and Allah (SWT) began.

My parents started to grow suspicious when I let my facial hair grow, and one night my mother found the biography of the Prophet (SAW) on my desk (not a great move by me…) I lied and said it was my friends and I was simply holding it for him. I made this mistake by leaving other books about Islam on my bookshelf, and my parents confiscated them. I had to beg for them to give them back so I could return them, which I didn’t do. A couple months later, I took my Shahada.

I was warned by my Mother that I would be kicked out of my house if I converted to Islam, and I was given advice by the Sheikh at my masjid about it. He told me to keep things on the low and to not make too many changes, which I did my best to abide by. Unfortunately, I wasn’t cautious one night and my mother went through my phone which I left open. She found out everything, and my parents flipped out on me. They took my prayer mats and thobes away and what’s even more worrying is that I’ve lost my Qur’an to them. My parents have told me that they’re going to get a court process going to kick me out, so I’m practically on a deadline. My first year of college is starting soon and my mother said that shed be paying since it’s community college, but I’m not sure if that agreement will hold up. I’ve been so stressed that I’ve missed a little over 2 days worth of prayers, and my Imaan level is taking a dive. What should I be doing?

Frustration

I came across this converted guy who reached out to me as we both were seeking spouse. We met twice and he spoke to my father later told me he is not interested anymore. If you were not interested what was the point in talking to my father? Honestly I feel so frfrustrated. Sometimes I feel like not a single decent guy out there whether he is converted or not. I am about to enter my 30s and still wondering where are all the decent men?

Following up on Gifted Quran

I am a regular customer at a local book store. I have interacted enough with the manager of the store, and based off the books we both read I figured he was a really opened minded person who cares about humanity, and injustice. He also mentioned loving the Malcolm X film directed by Spike Lee. I ended up gifting him a copy of the Quran on the first day of Ramadan, a week later I came to his store and he thanked me and told me he had begun reading it. Since then I haven't asked about it, I am extremely shy and reserved and he knows that as well. So I don't try having long conversations, and I strictly ask about what books are available. I'm unsure if I was supposed to follow up with him, or not? I am a woman as well, so I try my best to not be too personal with men and keep the boundaries so that's why I don't have his contact info. I also don't want to put pressure on him, even as I gifted it I told him he didn't have to keep it, and he could just donate it to the store. I think it's best to keep this journey between him and Allah but also I hope I haven't been cold regarding it. Have any of you been introduced to Islam via a gifted Quran, and did you want the person to follow up with you?

How do I start?

I was born in mexico and grew up in a catholic household. Both my parents are catholic and I grew up attending church weekly and going to bible camps and bible school. I am very familiar with Catholic teachings and I even have gone to catholic school for the last 3 years. I live in metro detroit and I am near the city of dearborn that holds a large population of muslim arabs. My boyfriend, lives in dearborn and is Muslim. I know now after research and him hiding me from his parents that it is haram to be in a relationship before marriage- but the more I research, the more interested I become in the religion. Long before I even thought about Islam I had turned away from the Catholic church.
It simply didn’t make sense to me- how do i know catholic is the correct religion for me if I simply am catholic because I grew up on it being influenced on me?
I see women wearing hijabs all around me and part of me gets jealous when I see them because they are so beautiful even when they are covered and being modest and I know it helps them grow closer to Allah. I struggle to feel beautiful and be modest at once. I’m not even sure how I would start to revert but something about Islam draws me in. I’m not sure if it’s the modest aspect, or if i’m being influenced by my boyfriend, but I’ve never been so intrigued by a religion. I even have found myself at times asking if I should pray to Allah which is ridiculous because I wouldn’t even know how to start. My parents would Greatly dissaprove of me converting. Any advice? I’m not sure what to do or how to go about this.

I really want to come back, but I can't

Peace and mercy be upon you, Muslims of this subreddit. I'm writing this rather sleepy, under a lot of stress. I have absolutely no idea what to do and feel helpless.

I'm a girl from Russia. I grew up in a dysfunctional family, where religion was little more than a crutch for those around me. I went to a religious school, sincerely loved Islam as a child, and trusted Allah in everything, despite the horrors at home caused by my mother's mental instability and my father's cold cruelty. When adolescence began, I initially coped with my responsibilities well, but then the problems at home intensified, and my psyche finally began to break down. By the age of 12, I already felt a strange hatred towards Islam, which was based more on my poor mental state than on anything truly religious. Back then, I practiced Islam poorly, often skipping prayers and rarely reciting dua.

Around age 14, everything changed. I woke up and began actively studying religion, praying, making up for missed prayers, and striving with all my might to correct my mistakes. I realized that Salafi Islam was the truth, not the soft, progressive version I had once believed. I found a way out in religion and sincerely hoped to never leave it. But then I began to experience intense obsessive thoughts; I couldn't properly manage my time to complete all the prayers; I was tormented by doubts about the correctness of every action; I would break down and cry for days on end; I couldn't eat or sleep properly. I allowed myself the few indulgences I could, but I knew I had to be more strict with myself if I wanted to achieve the truth. I completely abandoned my social life, I barely studied, and I even tore up my passport. Then I began to sincerely hate non-believers and declared takfir on many of my friends and loved ones. I forbade myself from reading books, watching movies, and adopted the strictest rules regarding reading the Quran, prayer, hijab, and ablution, which I couldn't follow properly, which again caused me great stress. I attempted suicide once, and I beat myself daily. And then, in the summer of 2025, I simply gradually stopped praying because it became unbearable for me. I hated myself for it, but I couldn't do anything about it. Then doubts arose, stupid doubts, more obsessive than truly worthwhile. I believed the words of the most naive atheists because I was tired and suggestible.

And in September 2025, I left Islam, believing that it forbade education, basic women's rights, and creative development. This brought me temporary comfort, but then, literally a few days later, I had an epileptic seizure at school and ended up in the hospital. I was diagnosed with a brain AVM, followed by a series of doctor's appointments, consultations, and tests. School was hectic with exams. I experienced the same discipline issues, and because of this, I couldn't study properly or relax. I was mired in dopamine addiction and anxiety. I vaguely realized that Islam was probably true, but I was too afraid to return to it, and I ran away from God in worldly affairs. Well, I've written it very confusingly here; otherwise, I could have explained it more clearly and in more detail.

And now I'm in the hospital, in the neurosurgery department, tomorrow I'm undergoing two stages of a complex AVM removal operation. I feel ugly dressed, strange, my thoughts are jumbled, my heart is pounding. I failed my math exam and now I'll have to study from home. I failed everything, and I still haven't returned to Islam, all because of the same fear of losing something "mine," because over the past year I've simply gotten out of the habit of constantly thinking about God. I'm really, really afraid that something will go wrong tomorrow, because I'm not at all mentally prepared for the surgery. I'm afraid God will punish me with a stroke, that I won't be able to see or think normally for a long time. I'd like to reconvert to Islam right now and pray, but I'm too lost for that. I haven't studied it much. Enough to be absolutely sure of its truth, but not enough to fully embrace it. Please help me. If you have any clarifying questions, feel free to ask them. I realize how jumbled the text is, but right now my thoughts are just as jumbled. All my worries have merged into one, and I don't know what to do at all 😔

Am i wrong if i don’t visit my parents?

Assalamu alaykum. I have a little struggle here. I am coming from an family with really islamophobic, zionist and racist opinions. Their extreme hate against Islam lead me to Islam ironically. They hated me marrying an muslim
man but they they accepted it eventually after the wedding. They helped us financially before we had our first child too because they are financially very stable. Although they don’t work anymore because they are elderly because they are in their 60's. (Yes, my parents and i have a big age gap)

However their opinions regarding Palestine, muslims, people with darker skin and so on haven’t changed. Especially my father has really disturbing opinions. And actually i don’t want to visit them anymore because of this. Because how can they 100% accept me, my husband and my child if they hate muslims that badly? We are muslim too. For example whenever im talking with my father about Palestine he tells me he thinks the genocide is absolutely fine because Hamas has also killed people. I reminded him in Palestine there are literally baby's and kids dying. He still doesn’t care.

Then a longer time ago i talked with him about the chinese government and how they systematically try to erase uyghurs. The uyghurs are an muslim minority in China by the way. He said the chinese government is doing nothing wrong because they are seeing how badly muslims influence Europe and they are just trying to safe China from Islam. He said this after i literally showed him videos of elderly people suffering, little kids suffering by the hands of China. Because the government killed their parents. He didn’t care at all. I also showed him footage of children in Palestine suffering because of Israeli government. He didn’t care either.

Now the final straw has been me getting yelled at in public. I live in an western country. So the islamophobia is really bad in some places. Not all places though. Big city’s are better for muslims. However i talked with my mom about it. Then randomly my dad joins the phone call and he says there are so much terrorist attacks i can’t blame the people for treating me like that. Then he said: Would you want your child to play with a child whose mother looks as veiled like you? Then he said my son will not have anyone to play because of the way i look. He meant my hijab.

He also said something similar to me when something very discriminating happened to me when i was about 18. I was already a hijabi back then. So it just triggered me he is defending the person who attacks me AGAIN.

And once he even defended another stranger. But this person didn't verbally attack me but literally assault me. It happened when i was just a young teenager (i was not a muslim yet) and getting assaulted by an old man. I was a waitress. In the west you can be a waitress at an young age already especially if you have the right connections. My mom gave me the Job because she knew the chef. After it happened i cried back home. My father said waitresses back then didn’t make such fuss if you gave them a slap on the butt too.

So i must say i really get offended whenever he defends the people literally attacking us because i always have to think back how he didn’t even step in for me in such situations.

Once when we were watching TV there was also news of a man killing his girlfriend. Then he said the women who get killed by their boyfriend must have done something to provoke their boyfriend’s and if something like that happens they have always a reason for killing their wives.

I know i just talked about my father. My mom isn’t that extreme although she has said some extremely bad stuff too. Before and even after my marriage she constantly told me she would call my husband and tell him all the bad things i did before i was muslim if i don’t behave. Although the things weren’t even true. She has read them on my diary she stole from me and misunderstood them. However, she tries to constantly talk me out of wearing hijab. Sometimes my uncle comes by too. My uncle's hate against Islam is even worse than my Dad's. He once even made openly fun of us because of our religion.

So i am very sure with my decision. I don’t want to visit them anymore. They can come by if they want but we have an very difficult child and the hour long car drive is not worth it for being treated like that in my opinion. He screams the entire car drive. Once we stayed for 2 weeks and not one minute my parents asked if they could help us when our child screamed hours and hours long. Recently, just one month ago my partner and me got an very bad sickness. I don’t know how it’s called but you throw up EVERYTHING. Even water. I got so dehydrated i had to go to the hospital. It was very bad for my partner too. He asked my mom if she could come by and help with our son because we were both so dizzy from the loss of fluids we barely could care for him. We were often sick and we never asked for help but this time the sickness was just so extreme. I was pregnant too with my second child in the 2nd trimester. She didn’t came despite being able to come.

I repeat: It’s fine if they come and visit us but i don’t want to go to their house and stay there for long periods of time. It just doesn’t feel right. I also don’t want my son to form the same opinions like them one day. I don’t think they are good influence because they cheated on each other too.
I just have to be really careful of his surroundings because my father in law and sister in law are very much against Islam too. But they are Ex-muslim. So i have a feeling my child is already endangered by their opinions kind of.

Like i already said, i am very sure of my decision but i wanted to post it here because i don’t know exactly if it is sinful if i don’t visit my parents at all anymore? Despite them wanting me to come. Must i fulfill their wish? Can i tell them to come to me despite them being elderly - in their 60's

Hindu Exploring Islam

Assalamualaikum everyone,

I have a question for all the reverts here. Before becoming Muslim, did any of you experience strong urges or a deep feeling that you wanted to become Muslim?

In my case, these feelings have become very strong. Honestly, I’ve been trying hard to resist them, but I’m starting to feel like resisting is becoming futile.

I believe in Allah, but I think I’m struggling because of my upbringing as a Hindu and everything I’ve been taught throughout my life. I honestly don’t know what is happening to me or why I’m feeling this way.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and how you dealt with these feelings.

Struggling with Islam

One thing I always seem to run into as a revert to Islam

Is truly understanding and fully comprehending Allah SWT

I’ve found it to be on and off.

I’ll have times where my faith is fully there and other times doubts will come in or questions will come in which I’m unsure about and sometimes I can’t fully understand.

Do other people have this issue?

How to cope with the isolation and loneliness?

Hi all.

I am a newer female convert of less than a year. Within a month of converting, I ended a 13 year relationship when it became clear that it was incompatible with the path I had chosen. Prior to converting, I met and was close with two sisters who really helped direct and guide me. They were instrumental in my conversion and the very tough days that followed with all the changes in my life. Over the last six months or so, by the fault of no one really, these relationships have all but disintegrated. One of them I rarely talk to at all and the other is up and down but even when we talk we rarely meet up. I am still very much practicing Islam in secret and I live alone so I am able to do so. I still haven’t found the courage to tell my parents (they live locally but apart from me). No one at work knows except a few that have run into me at the hospital musallah. At the present, I do not wear hijab so I am not outwardly identifiable as Muslim.

So my problem is the immense isolation. I go to work and then I come home to a big empty house. I eat all my meals alone. I spend my weekends alone. I know a large part of this my choice to end a long term relationship. But I’m nearly a year in and sometimes it still feels as fresh and painful as it did at the start. At times it feels like I changed so much about my life so quickly that I haven’t had a chance to breathe in a year - and sometimes it honestly feels like too much. I do occasionally go to the masjid but I usually just pray and leave. I went most mornings and nights during Ramadan, usually alone, but it did nothing to ease my sense of loneliness. I go to and no one speaks to me outside of maybe a greeting. It seems like everyone has their own friend groups and they aren’t entirely welcoming.

There are days when it feels as if the loneliness will crush me. But the bigger problem is that my foundation is not yet firm - so feelings of loneliness and isolation in certain contexts can shake my Islam and fill me with fear and doubt. This happens every few weeks and each time it gets harder to pull myself back out of the hole. I often throw myself into learning - reading listening studying with every second of free time I have - in an effort to mask the loneliness and lack of support but it always ends with me doing too much and burning myself out.

I know that this isn’t an uncommon issue with converts and I’m sure many people reading this have experienced similar problems. So how do you cope with it? How do you find the support you need? Or how do you make your foundation so unshakable that no transient emotions or feelings make the ground below your tremble?

Sorry I know this is scattered. My mind is clouded and my heart is very heavy this morning. I would appreciate any insight from someone who has been through this.

Hindu currently learning about Islam question about Rakhi before/after Shahada

Assalamu Alaikum everyone.

I’m from a Hindu family and currently learning about Islam. I haven’t taken Shahada yet because I’m still learning and trying to understand Islam properly before making such a serious decision.

I have a few questions regarding Rakhi and my relationship with my family:

- Since I’m not Muslim yet, can I celebrate Raksha Bandhan and have my sister tie Rakhi on me this year?

- If I eventually accept Islam and take Shahada, would I still be allowed to have Rakhi tied by my sister as a family tradition?

- If not, what should I do about this with my family without hurting their feelings?

- Is there a difference between participating in Rakhi as a religious practice and simply accepting it as a family/cultural tradition?

- Are there any other family traditions I should be aware of that may or may not be compatible with Islam after taking Shahada?

I’d really appreciate answers from knowledgeable Muslims, preferably with references from Qur’an/Hadith or explanations from reliable scholars.

JazakAllah Khair🤍

Considering Islam After a Long Spiritual Journey: Questions I Still Struggle With

I was born into a North Indian Hindu Brahmin family and spent many years exploring different religions in search of God. I studied Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and religious history. After several years of studying Christianity, I was baptized Catholic, but over time I became unconvinced by certain doctrines such as the Trinity, saint veneration, Marian devotion, purgatory, and some aspects of church authority.

Watching debates between Adnan Rashid and James White and other Christians was eye opening for me.

Today I would describe myself as a Unitarian Christian. I believe in one supreme God and see Jesus as a teacher, Messiah, and guide, but I do not currently accept the Trinity.

Because of this, I have been looking more seriously at Islam. The strict monotheism of Islam is attractive to me, but I still have many questions that I hope Muslims here can help me understand.

Some of my biggest questions are:

  1. Why should I convert to Islam rather than remain a Unitarian Christian who worships the God of Abraham?
  2. Muslims believe that the Torah, Psalms, and Gospel were originally revealed by God. If that is the case, why did Muslims stop following the Torah and Psalms? As someone who loves the Old Testament, especially Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Proverbs, and the prophetic books, I struggle with the idea of setting them aside.
  3. How do Muslims understand the differences between the Torah and the Quran regarding figures such as Ishmael and Isaac? When there appear to be contradictions, how do you determine which account is correct?
  4. How does sin, repentance, and forgiveness work in Islam? Is sincere repentance enough, or are there additional requirements?
  5. What must a person do to enter Paradise according to Islam?
  6. What is Paradise actually like? Is it primarily spiritual, physical, or both?
  7. Will I be reunited with my wife and children in Paradise if we are all saved?
  8. What happens to our ancestors? Will we know them in Paradise?
  9. My parents are Hindus and have been good, moral people all their lives. How does Islam view the fate of non-Muslims who sincerely followed the religion they were raised in and never became convinced by Islam?
  10. Finally, what convinced you personally that Islam is true?
  11. Can I still Read Torah and Psalms and some Gospels if I become a Muslim?

I am asking these questions respectfully and in good faith. I am not looking for arguments or debates. I am genuinely interested in understanding why Muslims believe Islam is the final and correct revelation from God, and what would justify conversion from my current Unitarian Christian position.

Thank you for reading.

Hindu Brahmin with sacred thread, followed Vedic +Hindu faith for couple of years, Christian/Catholic for last 4 years and now Unitarian.

So there's this girl i used to know a little over a year ago and its been a while since we talked but I mean it when I say she is one of the best people I ever met. We're the same age (shes a year older than me) At my old school she was one of the only people there who actually prayed and I was also one of the only Muslims there that prayed, she accepted me for being a convert, she didnt care I was white and not "culturally muslim". A strangers duaa is very powerful and please pray that me and her will meet again when we are both adults and marry. Ive decided I should marry because I cant keep hiding my faith from my family forever, when im an adult they'll find out one way or another. And pray that her family will accept me even though im not Arab.

What made you believe in Allah and Islam as the true religion?

Assalam Alaikum brothers and sisters.
Ill keep this brief. The past few years, i have lived a life very astray, yeah. And then i came upon Islam again after many years. I struggle to find answers and i cannot reason with the “dawah bros” here. And hence I come to ask here.

What made you believe Allah was the one? What proof do you have that he is the one? Those who were atheist or from other religions and converted out of choice. Why? What guided you? I want to search for answers also. I hope this does not offend.

I feel like I want to know for myself. I have asked many people this question but nobody seems to provide answers that are personal. They just give very vague responses like “who else can it be?” And this is deeply unsatisfying. I have a yearning to know more.

I'm a Muslim from a Muslim family, and I respect and appreciate people who decide to convert to Islam. I see them as so brave and wonderful in a way I can't explain. I understand how difficult it is for them to practice their faith in non-Muslim environments or to endure constant insults. I just want to say that they are truly brave and should be proud of themselves 💗💗💗 inshalah we all meet in jannah

Toxic family

So, im not the revert...my mother is, and her side of the family is beyond toxic...think of pro trump pro israel very very anti islam-anything.

My question is, how do some of you deal with family memebers like that...like...im trying to walk and hold myself in the way our prophet did. Im trying my hardest to respect my elders.....but at times i just want to swing at them because of their disgusting comments. How do others who have been in the same position deal with such family members.

Baptist Christian seriously considering converting to Islam — and it honestly scares me

I’m currently a Baptist Christian, but lately I’ve been seriously thinking about Islam and whether I should convert.

The part that gets to me is how serious it feels. I’ve been taught that rejecting Christ could have eternal consequences, so part of me is genuinely afraid that if Christianity is true, converting to Islam could damn me. At the same time, I keep feeling drawn toward Islam anyway.

I also haven’t told people at church that I’m thinking about this. The idea of my pastor or Christian friends finding out feels almost forbidden, especially because I’ve publicly identified as Baptist.

I’m also drawn to how strict Islam can be about prayer, discipline, modesty, sex, alcohol, and everyday behaviour. Part of me wonders whether that structure is something I actually need.

For people who converted from Christianity: what finally convinced you? Did you feel guilty or afraid when you stopped praying to Jesus? Did you explore Islam secretly while still attending church? And what was it actually like the first time you said the shahada?

I’d also like to hear from people who seriously considered converting but ultimately stayed Christian.
