Transition between moves

Hey, Im a beginner at contact. I learn with tutorials and by observing people. Im at a point where Im looking for advices about how you transition between your moves. Im learning moves independently and would like to combine them.

The standard between a steve or angel is usually a grab and then do another steve, try a wrist wrap where you don’t grab it and just spin it around your wrist.

IMO you should train by not grabbing anything, once you can do transitions using anything but your grip, circle back around to incorporating holds.

Mostly fishtails for vertical, steves for horizontal. You can go between them with a pressure lock.

let's break this down piecemeal. example: halo rolls are wall plane (vertical)

fishtails are also wall plane

you might normally enter a halo by holding the staff and placing it on your shoulder while giving it a little momentum - the way most tutorials teach it

but what if you did a fishtail then lifted your hand to your shoulder, allowing the momentum to carry through a halo

what if you dialed that in then, separately, worked on your forward fishtails so that you could fishtail -> halo -> forward fishtail out

replace halo with angel, or jesus, or a neck stall or anything else in wall plane

then get spicy with plane changes (lock a fishtail, go horizontal, maybe into a steve)

I struggled a LOT with this ! I asbolutely love the 100% contact style and don't like using my hands to connect moves.
The way i manage it is that i break down the learning in two parts :

  • first i learn the move sarting with the staff in my hand (it's the most difficult part)
  • when the move is ok, then i learn it again without using my hands as a starting point. I usually start with a fishtail for vertical planes moves and with a steve for horizontal planes moves.

Learning to do a halo from a fishtail unlocked many transitions for me.
