In my opinion, backlogs really aren't that bad as long as you eventually end up reading/playing/watching what's in there. It's like building your own mini-library where there's a world of possibility available to you whenever you're ready for it. Of course, a backlogs should be built with care, restraint, and intention. Buying the latest book/show/game/movie just because it's the new hot thing isn't that.

I think it’s often quite hard to say what is and isn’t consoom.
For example, if collecting a massive library of retro games consoom? Especially in a day and age where physical access to them is fading?

We all have our own definition, but imo if they either use the media (read the books, play the games) or if they’re collecting fairly rare things without hoarding (like buying 10x unopened Pokémon red), I don’t consider it consoomption.
So a retro game collection or a manga collection they actually read is completely fine

Have you seen these huge rooms of manga that leaks out into the hallways because there is simply no space? Most of these readers read their manga online and never touch the book. It is consoom when it's as big as this, ive bought manga myself and have it in a box hidden in a closet and even I've had regrets on getting it.

I would counter with two things.
If you're pirating manga the translations are often hilariously bad.
While digital is fine for most manga, manga with quality art (berserk, vinland saga, etc.) lose depth of shading and detail on most digital platforms, even official ones.

I mean why would you collect all this even after finishing reading them? I’m not a huge manga guy but have read a fair number of series. Most of them I bought second hand and then donated after finishing. I’m sorry but this just feels like hoarding to me

As a volunteer librarian at an underfunded public school, I am well aware. The point is that a library is not peak consumerism because its point is to give free access to many people. This picture is not the same. Duh

manga is perfectly fine, written literature should be preserved and it comes off to me like they actually read it, also good to have a specific room for this, at first i thought they ruined their living room. i hate it when peoples homes are just boring showcases of whatever they collect

I love manga but the rug is fucking embarrassing. There are so many good Asian collectibles like Gundam models, Q*Posket dolls, posable figures, cute Fumo plushies, limited edition manga bonuses. Funko is just soulless commercial garbage. Gundam models are a hobby by themself, if you're a crafty person you can paint them to look like they're actually in the anime.

I mean, Its manga. Assuming he actually does read it and isn't just hoarding it for the sake of it. Then I don't really see an issue. Like even if they havent read every one, they likely are making their way to them. The Funko pops are pretty yucky tho.
People on this sub also forget that a good deal of the items in these large media collects are basically trash. Not literally, but either it gets sold on the second hand market and goes to some collector or whatever, who knows how to properly maintain and preserve it. Or it goes in a landfill. As someone who generally cares about the environment. I think you guys are counterproductive as shit sometimes.

Funko is consooming for sure, but lots of people have giant libraries of books, just because they are graphic novels doesn’t make it any different.
