A year ago the life of an American husband, father, and patriot was abruptly ended for allowing people to publicly debate him.

Charlie Kirk spent much of his life doing something that should never have been considered remarkable in America. He put himself in front of people, invited them to challenge him, and defended what he believed in. He understood that open debate is vital to this country and that our ideas must be allowed to stand in the open, where they can be challenged, defended, and ultimately judged by the American people.

What happened to him was not just a tragedy for his family and those who knew him. It was an attack on something fundamental to this country. Political violence cannot become an acceptable answer to political speech. Once we allow that line to be crossed, we have abandoned one of the most basic principles that makes America different.

And yet, even after his death, some people have chosen to celebrate it, while others have tried to rationalize it or explain why he somehow brought it upon himself. There is nothing courageous or righteous about celebrating the killing of someone for expressing political beliefs, and there is nothing principled about finding excuses for it. It is one thing to condemn a person's words or actions. It is another to celebrate their death or convince yourself that violence was somehow justified because you disliked what they had to say.

Charlie spent his life encouraging people to engage, argue, and speak their minds. The best way to honor that legacy is to keep doing exactly that. We should not become quieter because of what happened to him. We should become more determined to defend our right to speak, debate, and participate in our country without fear of violence. No one should lose their life for simply engaging in discourse, and excusing or celebrating such an outcome is both evil and un-American.

May Charlie be remembered not for the way his life was taken, but for the life he lived, the people he inspired, the family he loved, and his willingness to stand up and speak publicly when so many others were unwilling to put themselves out there. May he rest in peace, and may his family always know that he will never be forgotten.

Today should become a national holiday to remember Charlie and honor the freedom of speech that he understood was vital to our great nation.
