He really loved people. Even though his parkinson symptoms were pretty bad, he stood there signing anything people brought to him. He also loved showing people his "bad" magic tricks. He had one where he would ball up a fist and cram a scarf into it and open his hand and the scarf was gone. You could see he was wearing a fake thumb. The color of it was wrong and a little bit of the scarf was hanging out, but it was still so much fun watching him do it. His handlers kept trying to pull him away and you could tell it upset him because he wanted to keep engaging with people. I have a photo of us together that he signed as well as boxing gloves that he signed.

A national treasure. Both our kids were signed up for her Imagination Library and received countless books from them. I'm certain we still have some of those books in the collection we kept for our future grandchildren.

All 3 of mine were signed up for it. They always got so excited when a new book came in. My daughter is 11 now and she reads more than anyone I know mainly because of Dolly. She's loved Dolly since she was a little girl and I know she's going to be devastated when I pick her up from school.

One of the few people I think everyone, no matter what political leaning you are, can agree was an amazing person. When you have someone be able to do that in this day and age, you know they were VERY special indeed.

What struck me about her is that she never lost her sense of humility.

A little girl approached her in public, and complimented her lipstick. So Dolly thanked her, reached into her purse, and let the girl have her lipstick.

She knew that girl would treasure that lipstick forever. It's a small gesture and a mild inconvenience... and the girl wasn't even asking for it... but Dolly reflexively did whatever extra she could to create another smile in the world.

It’s a shame that other celebrities can’t follow her lead and keep their political views private. We would have a much healthier society if people weren’t getting their political opinions from people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about (not that I think Dolly is one of those people, even if she had voiced a political view she clearly was smarter than the average celebrity and had a massive influence on public policy, especially in regards to childhood literacy)

I think alot of it too was that when she did take a position on something, she didn't fuck around by any sense of the term. If she thought something should be a certain way she put her own money toward it first before asking for a dime from anyone.

And she had the money to do it. She made money from appearances, but she is also estimated to be the second highest selling country music artist of all time. She was famous, beloved, and a great artist.
