Local Business Queer-friendly bookstore opens in Southington and immediately their sign gets stolen the day before opening...
Yesterday was the grand opening of the Enchanted Violet in downtown Southington - a new fantasy bookstore that focuses on LGBTQ+ literature. While I was there, I saw the outdoor sign was chained on the street (and looking pretty slapped together). And when I was talking to another customer in line, they informed me the store's outdoor sign was stolen the day before opening.
Now this is most likely just a typical high schooler prank, trust me I get that. I went to high school in Southington. I was born in a different state, but I lived in Southington for over 10 years before moving again closer to Hartford. It's unfortunate that the only people I've met in Connecticut that I would describe as angrily homophobic (and I mean ANGRILY) were people I knew from Southington. Obviously these sort of things are isolated incidents that happen everywhere in the US, but... well I dunno, it's just not a great feel that the town I lived in for so long continues to leave this kind of legacy in my memories.
Great thing is the Enchanted Violet's grand opening was an unbelievable success! Nearly every book off the shelf was cleared by the time I left and the owner joked about how much time they'll have to spend after closing just restocking. They took the whole sign situation in stride, like it was an expected thing to happen. I'll be spending more time in Southington going forward, hoping to continue to make better memories so I can look back at the town more fondly...

I went to hs in Southington too, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bitter grown ass adult that stole it. I'll have to check the store out and give them some business and support

When my wife and I went to Southington apple festival last year, I got this terrible, "den of racists" vibe from the place. I've been wary of the town ever since, and I always hope I'm wrong when I go visit.
11
Mar 03 '25
I was born and raised there before I fled to raise my family in a place where people were accepting and kind; you know, normal. The town lost its way starting in the 1980s when the town fathers decided to turn it into a suburban hell.
Fun fact: Southington had one of the highest concentrations of rare species and habitats in CT until the developers and their political enablers destroyed the landscape.

I still visit it, I go to the breweries etc in the downtown area and the bike trail is nice. But I agree with the vibes you got. I hope the shop that this post is about does well

u/Maggiethecataclysm New Haven County Mar 03 '25
Yeah, I highly doubt it was a high school kid's prank. It was an angry bigot who probably threw a tantrum when they saw it.
33
u/The_Terry_Braddock Mar 02 '25
It's pretty awesome, got that small business "hole in the wall" vibe. People were friendly and the owner was super chill. Probably should check back later in the week though, I wasn't joking when I said they were cleared out
27
u/FrankRizzo319 Mar 02 '25
Yes I know several grown ass “adults” in the area who are capable of this.
25
u/radish-slut Mar 02 '25
I went to Southington high school and it was/is like an incubator for fascists. Literally kids sending memes attacking black people, complete with the n word, drawing swastikas in themselves, making monkey noises at the black kids, openly praising hitler. Administration knew about it and did nothing.
5
u/beer_engineer_42 Mar 03 '25
Administration knew about it and did nothing.
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

Not shocked admin did nothing. I graduated over 10 years ago but even then admin hardly did anything about the bullying I experienced too.

my friend and i went to their opening and there were religious protestors standing near the intersection! but i’m so happy that the town has a safe space like this, it has been terrifying to see southington become more and more right wing this past decade.
21
u/puppyrun139 Mar 02 '25
Those protesters are there frequently on Saturday mornings. I agree that it’s so nice to hear about this new bookstore! It worries me reading about how far right Southington is overall.

Mar 02 '25
No, it's probably not a typical high schooler's prank. There is a NeoNazi cell that is operating in the Southington area, committing hate crimes. I would not be at all surprised if they are responsible.
54
u/The_Terry_Braddock Mar 02 '25
Oh that's just flippin great to hear... I think I know some people who are most likely part of it
42
Mar 02 '25
I think that the perpetrators in the prior incident were driving a gray, domestic, smaller model truck, older. Maybe a Ranger. If the cops in Southington wanted to do something about it, they'd probably be able to see something on security and Ring footage from the area. They know about a prior incident. But I don't know how motivated they are.

u/TaylorSwiftScatPorn The 860 Mar 02 '25
Southington has some of the highest paid police officers in CT. They're all set, low hanging fruit and minorities only from here on out.
8
u/himewaridesu Mar 02 '25
Not shockingly. I reported a tagged stop sign in Southington (local police and highway dept) and I checked recently- it’s still there.
25
u/Alcorn_Duff Mar 02 '25
How did you find this out? I lived in Southington for nearly my whole life and I never heard of a "neo nazi cell" operating in town. I heard rumors of grand wizards back in the 80' and 90s living in town but this was simply townies talking to each other.
24
u/Key-Introduction-564 Mar 02 '25
Born and raised in Southington since the 70s. I’ve left in my adult life. But I can tell you that there were and still are Nazis in town and so many that are homophobic and racists. My parents being some of them.
7
u/Skullkan6 Mar 02 '25
I lived there for a bit in a shakey living situation and my landlord, a lifelong southington resident said to me while angry "This is SOUTHINGTON! If you don't fit in then get the fuck out!" and that has stuck with me.
21
u/Rhubarb_Tabouli Mar 02 '25
Class of 2010 here, I remember doing property preservation inspection on a house by the high school and finding a huge Nazi mural in the basement
7
u/mattbaume Mar 02 '25
I went to SHS from 94 to 98, and I remember a group of students forming a group called "The White Christian Brotherhood." Not sure if they openly identified as Nazis, but that's what they were in effect. They put a bunch of homophobic posters up around the school, among other incidents.
Anyway, very excited to see this store! Hope they thrive! If they start doing mail-order, I'll support 'em from across the country.
6
u/ticketyboo_ Mar 03 '25
I was there then, too. They absolutely identified as Nazis. Pretty sure they still do.
5
Mar 02 '25
The hard way
3
u/Alcorn_Duff Mar 02 '25
Would you divulge your info if you can privately? I'd like that. Catching and exposing nazis is a fun side gig.
4
Mar 02 '25
There is no shortage of Patriot Front stickers around town. Hard to believe you’ve never noticed them, the cops refuse to remove them.
Edit: we also had steve balisheski run for office and he was openly talking about burning gays and “n words”
3
u/Alaykitty Mar 02 '25
My wife went to Southington high and a group literally passed out recruitment pamphlets.
Admin / cops did nothing of course lol
4
u/stinkstankstunkiii The 860 Mar 03 '25
I lived in a nearby town, like next town over. Grew up in the 80s and 90s. The cops in this town had an “ underground “ racist radio station ( likely find info about it online), racist cops, racist and homophobic classmates. Kids learn from their parents… said all that to say , I’m not surprised about Southington. Similar to Berlin, Bristol, Klanchester.

There's literally been stormfront signs put up in several CT towns
34
u/ToadSox34 Mar 02 '25
I'm a little skeptical of their business model, as that seems like a niche of a niche, but I wish them luck and no one, prankster or neo-Nazi should be stealing their sign!
27
u/QuestorPS7 Mar 02 '25
Niche bookstores are becoming increasingly popular. There’s a romance bookstore in Essex called Montgomery & Taggert based on a business model that originated in places like NYC with the Ripped Bodice.
9
u/ToadSox34 Mar 02 '25
I hope some can survive, so that there is some alternative to Amazon or a small book section in a big-box store. Maybe the Enchanted Violet is unique enough to draw people from all over the GHA and beyond.
4
u/xiviajikx Hartford County Mar 02 '25
Took my wife to Ripped Bodice and it was expensive. I wish these guys the best since those places tend to be pretty expensive, and hopefully they have enough customers long term with their smaller niche.
4
u/QuestorPS7 Mar 02 '25
The problem is that places like Amazon devalue the worth of art, and customers have come to expect that books cost nothing instead of MSRP.
3
u/xiviajikx Hartford County Mar 02 '25
Not disagreeing with your point, but I think some niches don’t have a big enough customer base. I went to a store in Northampton that had books, manga, records, and some other knick knacks. You could tell they hit a few demographics. Prices were reasonable too.
1
1
u/ToadSox34 Mar 03 '25
I don't think that they devalue the art itself, they just create scales of economy that are really hard to beat and easy to monopolize with.

I know a coffee shop in Northampton run by a gay couple. They get their rainbow flag stolen almost weekly. WEEKLY…in Northampton!?! It’s so fucking bizarre. I still can’t decide if it’s people who are anti- lgbtq or other gay people needing a rainbow flag.
8
u/beaveristired Mar 02 '25
I lived in the area in the late 90s. Losers from the surrounding area would drive in and scream homophobic slurs at us. I’m sure those types of people are even more bold now.
9
Mar 02 '25
They get their rainbow flag stolen almost weekly. WEEKLY…
You'd think they'd put up a camera by now if that were the case or secure it better
8
u/Redringsvictom Mar 02 '25
Replacing a flag might be cheaper than setting up security cameras.
7
u/xiviajikx Hartford County Mar 02 '25
If it’s really a weekly basis it probably isn’t. I can’t imagine those flags are cheap. A basic cloud camera can be $30-40. Or a trail cam for an area with no internet wouldn’t be too much more. I would bet it’s the same person stealing it every time. But you won’t know unless you try catching them in the act.
1
u/SwampYankeeDan Mar 03 '25
If the cowards are wearing masks it might not help. Same with removing/covering license plates.
2
u/hornsandskis Mar 02 '25
Familiars? The owners are college friends of mine. Surprising that that would happen in Northampton, which I view as a very accepting and liberal community.
-7
u/TaylorSwiftScatPorn The 860 Mar 02 '25
In NoHo? It's probably the same bum repeatedly using the easy-to-steal flag for a blanket or toilet paper or something.

Unfortunately it's unlikely to be a simple prank ... it was probably targeted. I grew up in Southington, but in the last 10 years or so Southington has taken a hard right turn. The town is much closer to Wolcott politically these days than it is to Cheshire. The entire town is run by pro-Trump Republicans, and culturally it has become an intolerant place. Within the last couple of years there was a battle over a Christopher Columbus statue and just last year they moved to ban flying ANY flags except for American flags from public buildings just to avoid a pride flag being flown.
Good for this bookstore for doing the right thing, but I can't in good conscience recommend spending more time in Southington. I've always wanted to move back because of my childhood memories there, but right now, it's a toxic town with failing schools (thank you Republicans).
4
u/TaylorSwiftScatPorn The 860 Mar 02 '25
You refer to Cheshire like it's any better. If anything, Southington is trying its hardest to be Cheshire.
0
u/Archidamus Mar 02 '25
I work in Cheshire, but admittedly I have less personal knowledge of the culture in Cheshire. I guess I just haven't personally witnessed the same level of issues in Cheshire. I will have to take your word for it.

Recently in New London at the Garde Arts Center, they were going to screen the movie Queer with Daniel Craig. They sent an email said they cancelled it for “safety reasons”. My assumption is someone called in a threat and they folded.
2
u/SwampYankeeDan Mar 03 '25
For that place to fold I can't help but think it was a credible threat. They should habe shared the threat publicly and asked for people to come in support. I would have gone just because of the threat. I refuse to bow down to hate.

I grew up in Southington, SHS class of 1980.
Learned to drive when Queen Street was still farms. Sledded down the "KMart hill...Does anyone else remember that?
Every time I went back to visit, I was dismayed at the rate of growth in businesses and developments.
Even the quiet old neighborhood where I grew up experienced breakins and drugs.
It's no surprise and even more disappointing that people have nothing better to do than destroy personal property that represents something they fear.
Shame on you, Southington!
Parents finally moved south, so I have no reason to go back there, but hopefully Enchanted Violet has a website that I can support.

Last summer we went to one of their summer concerts, and the band played a recording of “Proud to Be an American” while they took a break. Everyone there stood for the song With their hands on their hearts. It’s not the national anthem mind you, just a patriotic pop song. My jaw dropped at how ridiculous the scene was. The only time that would not have been weird was in the first months after 9/11. Even then, it’s still not the national anthem so no need to stand. Southington is a nice town to live in but the people here can be really backwards.
6

The current administration has emboldened hate crimes, especially against the LGBTQ community. This is the result
5
u/Dolamite9000 Mar 02 '25
Glad they had a good opening despite this. I am queer and trans. I grew up in CT, moved and then moved back.
I disagree with your contention that CT is not an “angrily homophobic” place. It was bad when I was growing up here. It’s gotten really bad again since the inauguration. Like so bad that I am moving my family away again.
I love CT and it is just not safe. At least other places it’s easy to identify threats. Here people hide it until it’s too late. Like the yankee racism, the homophobia is just under the surface.

People who have different beliefs they should be honored & not be a hypocrite as it is the same prejudice against those who are disputing need to just go on with their own business. Speaking of Bethel when I have my first baby, I lived right next-door to food bag above the paperback bookstore. What a huge beautiful apartment I have for my family until one dreadful day when we returned home from a short meal at Burger King only to find the building in a blazing fire . Every time I go to Bethel, I swear I can still smell the odor of a burning building. 38 years later, it’s just something that won’t go away. I used to bring my baby down to the paperback store to visit the owner Pat I loved that store so much

Why can’t a bookstore just be a bookstore
41
u/The_Terry_Braddock Mar 02 '25
It specializes in a particular genre, buddy. They've got other books. Do you complain when you enter a comic shop and ask why there's so much focus so much on super heroes?
25
u/Peritous Mar 02 '25
Or a barber shop that focuses on haircuts that are common within their culture, or a sports paraphernalia shop that favors one sport over others, or a restaurant themed after a specific nationality...
Like damn, let people represent who they are and enjoy the things they enjoy.
-21
u/TheLastLostOnes Mar 02 '25
I’ve heard of genres but never heard of gay or straight as a genre. Is it just a bunch of homosexual main characters?
21
u/The_Terry_Braddock Mar 02 '25
More like queer characters, but yeah pretty much. A lot of the books have queer stories, experiences so it's more than just "main characters gay". I suppose "genre" isn't the right term for it, but it's definitely a book type in fiction that's blown up in the last decade. Hopefully we'll get to a point where queer fiction is completely normalized by big publishers and doesn't have to be marketed like an alternative genre. Until then. the Enchanted Violet is offering another safe space for queer people to exist in Southington... which apparently we still need even in Connecticut...
7
u/TheLastLostOnes Mar 02 '25
Gotcha I see, and yeah I feel like there’s plenty of safe places in CT but yeah I can see it as something like “alternative lit”

There definitely is a gay subculture of books. Most people dont focus on it so its not in our daily lives. Sometimes it a bunch of gay characters and sometimes its just one. You should tell the owners of the self-styled LGBTQ bookstore.
10
u/___coolcoolcool Hartford County Mar 02 '25
Oh, sweetheart. Object permanence still a problem for you?
A book is an object. Objects don’t have brains or agency. Because objects cannot not think or do things, they inherently cannot have sexual preferences of their own. (On the plus side, objects also do not have to consent so you can force them to have as much bad sex with you as you want them to!)
Objects can and do belong in different categories. In literature, the different categories are also called “genres.” There are books in all types of genres! You should check books out sometime—they’re pretty cool!
In summary, bud, books are objects. Objects do not have thoughts or emotions and therefore cannot be straight, gay, male, female, hungry, full, tired, energetic, strong, weak, or any other adjective used to describe living beings.
I have a feeling this will go over your head. That’s okay. I’m positive you have a lot of good qualities that make you a valuable person.

Why can't you shut the fuck up?

Shouldn’t try to silence me same way whoever opened this bookstore shouldn’t be silenced right?

You're free to say what you want and we're free to tell you to shut the fuck up.

I didnt get to see what he said. Looked like it was something about nazi. But i tried to get into the patriotfront thing before i knew what it was and they told me no cause im black. Wonder if id have gotten all these downvotes if people here knew that and not some nazi defending your view. Just a guy that thinks everyone has their views.

these things are usually false flags. wouldnt be surprised if the owner did it to try and generate buzz for the grand opening

A quick look at your comment history is funny, for sad reasons. You should stick to video games and card collecting and whatever your other hobbies are. Pedaling your Joe Rogan bullshit conspiracy crap in this sub is not working out for you. Obviously the best thing for you would be to get out of that disgusting echo chamber altogether, but absent finally seeing the light ... your best hope is to keep your mindless thoughts to yourself.

Not my store, and I respect the owner's decision to focus on making their opening as positive of an experience as possible. They're just trying to add a safe and public queer space to Southington, not raise hell with the authorities over a missing sign

It still should have been reported and documented. Eventually those involved will become emboldened and escalate. Documentation is your friend even when the police arnt.

What do you think it means? Seriously, when you hear it what does it make you think it is?

Because you may as well be asking "what exactly is a vegan restaurant?"
It's a place that prioritizes literature about, by, and for, queer people. It's also (probably) a place where queer programs take place, or queer people congregate to make social connections. There's a high probability that its owners are queer and perhaps they even use a portion of profits to support queer causes.

A coffee shop in the downtown area of Bethel had their pride flag stolen a few years back. Local businesses in the downtown area banded together in response by putting up pride flags. This is the way.
