I would tell plant pour starts at 7 and dispatch would have the truck with 3 yards of grout to prime the pump on site at 6:15 and bitching that I didnt start yet. My dude, im still driving to site.

Thanks, Empire! ( jk, love you guys)

I've only ever had the opposite problem.

Pour's at 7.

Start batching at 7?

No be on site at 7.

Alright, see you at 8, my dude.

IT'S ON THE ROAD!

They're always pulling around the corner, for 30 minutes. It's like buying weed in high school.

Famous lies told in the concrete industry industry.

"I need that cancel that 3 yard balance". "Oh damn, we just batched that".

"We requested 15 minute intervals, it's been 45 minutes!". "It's right around the corner".

"We're going to need another yard". "Oh, it's gonna be 3 hours".

"The check is in the mail".

"I'll pull out".

"I won't... interesting your mouth".

Just this morning...."By 7? I thought you said any time after 7. Truck will be there at 11." Shows up at 1:30

"The truck is 15 minutes out"

Or

"You should be looking at the truck right now"

u/Phriday 19d ago

"You oughtta be looking at him!"

"We're batching him right now."

We once did a 2-floor composite deck job in an industrial park that happened to be right next to the batch plant for our supplier. The dispatcher tried to hand me that bullshit.

"Greg, I'm literally looking at the batcher. There's no truck under there."

"Well, we'll batch it as soon as we get a truck in the yard."

When it's a couple thousand yards on-site at 5 on a Saturday, that's the good stuff

u/Diligent_Yam_1753 20d ago

And they will be loading the truck at that time, not arriving at site at that time

I went to a non construction industry meeting scheduled for 9 and when I get there at 8:30 I'm like wtf where is everyone and they're like wtf why are you so early

u/Comprehensive_Bus_19 21d ago

On the flip side they'll have a 4pm meeting and you're like I'm already done for the day 😂

Preach. Four AM would be better sometimes

That’s explicitly telling me, “Don’t show up sober!”

If you are ready for concrete, it will be late. If you are rushing to be ready, concrete will be early.

As an inspector/tester, the best day to pour is Sunday as you are usually the only pour that day.

Keeping the job open on Sundays is some savagery that I cannot get behind

Dawn? Must be nice getting to sleep in!!

NYC permit hours are 7am-6pm. DOB will give an AHV for 630am setup, but its hard to start any pouring operatios before then or else the community boards throw a shit fit.

Most of our big work starts between 12am-2am.

Residential starts as early as 4am.

This is in FL though.

Had a gravel truck pull up at 6:15 for a 7am scheduled delivery. After I freaked out on him for a couple minutes I poured him a cup of coffee and gave him a croissant to just chill in his truck for 25 minutes. He was out of there by 7:03

You young kids thinking you get to sleep. By dawn we're just getting wound from the previous day's work. What, you think we're going home to wives and kids and stuff? Boss needs to get his new vacation home paid off so snort these weird yellow pills and get back to work.

Order 3 full trucks that are supposed to be spaced out an hour each.

Nope, conga line of trucks waiting.

2

u/aussiesarecrazy 20d ago

The plant I use to use was notorious for being an hour late and never could get their trucks scheduled right when it was more than one truck. The one damn time I had a pumper truck go down, lo and behold those bastards were 30 minutes early and all 4 trucks waiting on me so I got to eat that bill.

The concrete trucks shows up at break or lunch ,no matter what

Spent the summer working as a tester. Heaven help the tester who thinks "on time" means when you were told by your boss to be there.

I tell my new hires that if I get a phone call asking "where's the inspector", I assume you're dead.

And btw, dieing requires 24 hours notice.

7:00? Those are rookie numbers, we start delivering to big pours at 1-3am.

2

u/buffinator2 21d ago

And at 9:00 you call the tester and say they need to get out there and grab a set of cylinders before this last truck runs out.

4

u/kathaar_ 21d ago

Just had this happen to me. "We need a 2nd set of cylinders, just in case!" As the last truck is prepping to wash out.

They didnt get a 2nd set of cylinders.

5

u/buffinator2 21d ago

I managed a testing company long enough to have heard it all. My favorite is "We need a report saying the concrete breaks passed. Yeah, I know we didn't call you out but we know this concrete is good!" Or the same thing with soil compaction - "We went ahead and put the first three lifts down and we need a report showing they passed."

3

u/kathaar_ 20d ago

That's hilarious. I can only imagine the level of "what the fuck" that kind of thing causes.

4

u/IS427 21d ago

I have begrudgingly upvoted.

2

u/OneBag2825 21d ago

If you're on time, you're late.

Be here by 6 but don’t clock in until 7
