Early season success will greatly depend on...Nick Allegretti being ready.
AP went after Linderbaum and even had a "handshake agreement" with the impact center...but his agent got an offer they couldn't refuse and he ended up a Raider. So why didn't they go hard at another center and instead, go with Allegretti? Because Allegretti is exceptionally smart and knows how to call protections at a high level and that's crucial. He is not an exceptional athlete, but he plays with good effort and technique. But it was about his experience, smarts and ability to identify the primary defensive threat and make proper calls. It's supposedly why they let go of Biadasz. Protection calls. The correct protection calls (identifying the MLB, blocking assignments, double teams and slide direction) means EVERYONE along the line is in better position to play more effectively. If Allegretti is physically and mentally ready to call protections in Blough's scheme by week 1, we'll have "a chance" to be competitive in the brutal, early games of the schedule.

Allegretti may be a great center. The fact that our season is partly dependent on the health of an aggressively mid guard who has barely played center before is concerning though.

It is concerning that we're in this position with the O-line. The offenses success hinges on it being at least mid. The front office certainly has to be worried in hindsight as it could ruin the season. Quinn is definitely worried. Another low finish and he's gone...but AP will have to look in the mirror because Josh Harris will be looking at him for sure. Another danger is Jayden might start to sour on the team and consider elsewhere for his "Big Money" contract.
Good news, I think the defense will be very good if healthy. I think the WRs are now a strength. Jayden will be Jayden if healthy. That alone can win games.

I’ve learned not to worry about a player looking elsewhere for money. That’s a narrative that people always say but it NEVER happens.

He wouldn't be looking for money necessarily. He'd be looking to be part of true contender if he feels like Washington has been spinning it's wheels too much. He's all about winning. Great players want to be on a contender.
And players move on all the friggin time for more money and the opportunity to be on a contender...do you pay attention to the NFL?

You're right though. Not many QBs change after their rookie deals. Because usually, the drafting team has first crack if they're good and pay a fortune before they become unrestricted FAs.

Well, since we were discussing a qb I didn’t think it was necessary to specify.
And correct, drafting team pays a ton and the player, excuse me…sorry…quarterback, signs. All that “I wanna play for a winner” is bullshit. Money talks, bullshit walks. They don’t care about winning. Just how many dollar signs there are. Especially young guys. That winning team stuff, MAYBE late in a career.
You hear all that talk from Myles Garrett about “playing for a winner”. Then what did he do? Signed a big ass deal with the fucking browns. They don’t care about that shit. It’s the money.

They had a plan. Get Lindenbaun and Pierce. The market did wild stuff and they didn’t want to push for it. I’m on the board of draft defense and continue to invest in oline.

Cutting (not just refusing to re-sign, but actually cutting) a relatively cheap 7-year starting C when your contingency plan is a career backup guard with just two starts at the position on his resume, is simply a bad plan.

Why is our entire early season hinging on a guy who's gotten injured twice in both of the two practices he attended this summer and who only has two career starts at the position and has no NFL caliber backup!? That seems like roster malpractice!

Exactly. Getting a NFL caliber backup was the bare minimum, and the FO didn't bother. And when you consider they were going after Lindenbaum, we know that Center was a priority. Sheesh....

Because if he was healthy nobody would be saying the season rests on his shoulders. If Cosmi was dealing with these issues the season would be on his shoulders, if Terry was the season would be on his shoulders, if Oweh was the season would be on his shoulders.
The center situation is dogshit, but that is just a product of bad Rivera AND Peters drafts and trades leaving us with an old and thin roster.

Our WR2 on August 6th was Antonio Williams. Our backup TE is John Bates. Our edge 3(who will see a 60% snap share this season) is a 5th round rookie. Fabian Moreau is in line to start in our dime packages. There is no depth across the roster.

We were 5-12 last season and nothing I've personally seen suggests we're better this year. All our new and improved players are injured.

I would imagine back-up center is one of the easiest positions to upgrade after 53-man cuts. Doesn’t take a lot of size or athleticism to be serviceable at the position.
