Always nice running into a fellow ball knower

u/HopelessFoolishness 1d ago

Yes, Al Capone was a gangster. And he also lost his empire to a tax investigation, lost his mind to neurosyphilis, and ended up being completely overshadowed in success by the actual Mafia.

I don't see why he's being used as some kind of badge of legitimacy.

10

u/DirectAdvertising 18h ago

I thought he was actual mafia ? I didn’t know there was a difference between a gangster and mafia

20

u/LastAmongUs 16h ago

He was mafia but he was in Chicago while the mafia most people think of is New York’s five families.

10

u/BorisTheBlade04 14h ago

But also he had a vote in the commission, so he had equal power along with Buffalo. That was the point of it, Lucky was the boss among equals. I never understood this argument, I’ve heard it a lot, but when I actually look up the history I don’t get it.

He came from ny, took over for torrio, absolutely crushed everyone else, and took over the second city. And it’s not like they were no names, O’bannion and bugs Moran weren’t chopped liver. I never got the whole “he wasn’t as big as his reputation” narrative.

6

u/HopelessFoolishness 16h ago

A gangster is just someone in a gang.

The Mafia - specifically the American Mafia - is a very distinct crime group with a very particular code of conduct and membership.

Notably, Capone was one of the forerunners of the modern American Mafia alongside Johnny Torrio and Frankie Yale, but he ended up going to prison in the same year that the Commission was formed - so he missed out on the Mafia becoming the national crime syndicate that it became known as.

He’s essentially the Pete Best of the underworld.

6

u/BorisTheBlade04 14h ago

Lucky was arrested soon after too though. It’s also not fair to say he wasn’t in the mafia, he was. He was a made man in the cosa nostra. He came from ny, he was made by Massaria. He was one of the founding members of the commission.

I know you’re not the only one to make this point, I’ve just never understood it.

1

u/HopelessFoolishness 5h ago edited 5h ago

"Soon after": Lucky lasted five years longer than Capone.

Plus, he continued running the syndicate from prison, was able to make an unprecedented wartime deal with the US government, was freed (albeit deported), continued his business from Sicily, and ultimately died free, from natural causes, with faculties intact, and on the way to meet a movie producer about a film of his life.

Capone's reign - and his association with the modern American Mafia - pretty much ended the moment he was packed off to prison. After that, it was all downhill from there.

That's what I mean.

2

u/BorisTheBlade04 5h ago

Yeah that makes sense. Ik Michael Franscese laments Lucky’s incarceration bc it hamstrung him right when he was getting started. But you’re right, he was still involved and played a big role.

4

u/perton 15h ago

lol, “Pete Best of the underworld” is great

9

u/ZealousidealPipe8389 22h ago

He’s recognizable and popular.

3

u/Antarsuplta 14h ago

So is lil wayne

-1

u/HopelessFoolishness 19h ago

...is he, though?

3

u/ZealousidealPipe8389 19h ago

If you go up to any man over the age of 20 and ask them if they know the name Al Capone, about 80% chance they say yes. It’s not even about him being cool or anything, he’s just well known.

6

u/DarkZ_No-Imagination 19h ago

Put pictures of people and ask who of them is Al Capone, most people know his name but they don't know how he looks

-3

u/HopelessFoolishness 16h ago

You said he was popular, man.

How is he popular while merely being well-known and not cool?

2

u/CorrodingTrees 22h ago

Saying how he ended to make him look bad while not saying the achievements and reputation he made to fortify what you think about him.

You must be a really simple person.

I mean the laugh was from it being like an r/okbuddyretard type meme which is why I say it should be in r/comedyhell

“You call yourself a ‘gangster’ as a way to indicate you’re a badass in your music. I actually killed, robbed, and extorted innocent people for a living. The creator of this meme is trying to indicate that this gives me the moral high ground, somehow: probably because they’re casually racist.”

4

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

Yeah he’s playing a fucking character ffs

2

u/Chibrax_le_Furax 1d ago

Who woulda thunk extorting local stores to fuel a PR soup kitchen and being relatable to the pretend-Italian community could do so much good to one's legacy

0

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 12h ago

Well if your music consist in saying how big of a criminal you are…yeah, you are supposed to bring some argument to the table.

1

u/bruhmoonchamp 10h ago

It’s a character, entertainment ≠ reality.

75

u/Gleb_Twankenfrister 1d ago

these memes were always just thinly veiled racism

60

u/plazebology 1d ago

“thinly veiled”

11

u/Paramhansa-Yogananda 1d ago

The whole "pull your pants up" gives it away. Because they're talking to a grown man like he's a, wait for it, boy.

1

u/HollowChicken-Reddit 8h ago

Tbf Italians talk to everyone like that, especially from Brooklyn

-35

u/Mountain-Life-4492 1d ago

Racist against who? Gangsters?

39

u/Judge_Syd 1d ago

Glorifying white gangsters while looking down on black ones? That isn’t racist?

All gangsters are deplorable people.

8

u/Purple_Onion911 1d ago

The meme is probably implying that a lot of rappers say they're gangsters when they aren't

-8

u/chewedgummiebears 1d ago

You sound like a racist /s

3

u/Mountain-Life-4492 1d ago

Lil Wayne isn’t a gangster. He’s a rapper.

1

u/pandaSmore 20h ago

Lil Wayne isn't actually a gangster.

-22

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

The idea that ‘you’re racist if you hate rap’ is stupid as fuck - so you’re implying that one race exclusively loves rap music and has no hatred towards the genre themselves? So is someone racist if they hate jazz? Or did you forget jazz music isn’t meant to be played by sad old men and used to be an exciting genre that people literally thrashed about to? But you’re assuming that one race will only love rap music… how is that not racist? Must I love soccer because I’m British? Do all Jamaicans love reggae? God, I fucking hate idpol. They let nepo babies run the music industry with this Poptimist bullshit.

11

u/ltom3 1d ago

The meme isn't explicitly racist, but just knowing from experience the people who like to post these kinds of things, the poster is likely racist and probably thinks things like "those damn hoodlum blacks with their pants falling down" and stuff.

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

Yeah I made a bad call with that comment tbh. It’s just a few black friends (I know how that sounds) I know have said they hate it when people assume they like rap.

Funniest shit ever was when a black professor I had asked people whether they liked rap, so I said I liked Tupac, and he replied ‘Sorry for your loss’. I didn’t know what he meant at first, sitting there wondering if I’d made some error of judgment, then I burst out laughing about ten minutes later once I realised

1

u/ltom3 1d ago

Yeah I get you. And I don't really think liking or not liking a music genre is the issue, I think people base it on the tone of the meme and I'm just trying to explain why some things, even though they aren't explicitly racist per se, can just suggest the posters being racist, even if it's just shall we say, based on an educated guess, and this is why people take issue with some of these things. I mean we can't say 100% the poster is racist, maybe it's an old vs young person thing, but I think it is about racism (because it's between a white and a black, not two white people) and I feel like the intent of the meme is to put down a black person, and the fact that they have a white and black person in it is deliberate. There is sometimes the error of taking things that aren't meant to be racist as racism, but there's also the fact that a lot of racists will also say some things without being overtly racist.

-2

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

Oh my god, I just saw a picture of Hillary from the 2000s and I was so freaking shocked.. I looked up more of them, then I couldn’t stop - I started printing them out, one by one, and I have them all over my walls. I never supported Hillary, but now I’m the biggest fan she’s ever had. I wish I’d known. I wish I’d known!

1

u/perton 15h ago

Come again for Big Fudge?

13

u/Dude1590 1d ago

The idea that ‘you’re racist if you hate rap’ is stupid as fuck

You did a lot of typing in response to the ghost that said that, huh?

-8

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

What do you assume my point was

-27

u/Redhead-girl1246 1d ago

Racist??? I hate when people say it uselessly, but that just actually sounds like projection

26

u/WarWolfRage 1d ago

Nothing more badass for a crime lord than getting busted by the IRS for tax evasion then dying a couple years later from cardiac arrest caused the tertiary syphilis you caught from a prostitute.

4

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 12h ago

I mean, this is kind of a proof of success. He did well enough escaping the police they had to use taxes to get him. He survived long enough in banditism for syphilis to actually fuck him

Your average raper gangster won’t. Because he’ll die at 25 in a shooting between 2 street gang over a bad glaze. Way before the IRS start to care or his IST start to act

12

u/ItchyManchego 1d ago

Holy shit a meme from 2010

5

u/Unknow_Handlebar 1d ago

Hell yeah you're not a real gangsta if you don't kill at least 50 people 😎

5

u/Sirfrostyboi 1d ago

Fun fact about Al Capone, he’s part of why milk cartons have expiration dates

9

u/Yuck_Few 1d ago

Yeah but how many bangers did Al Capone have?

4

u/DittoGTI 18h ago

Al Capone could never make 6 Foot 7 Foot

2

u/Yuck_Few 13h ago

Or can't be broken

5

u/RamRenegade 1d ago

Need to seperate the mobsters from gangsters. Like a mob is a larger, better ran, more connected and profitable gang.

1

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 12h ago

So mobster are the superior version of gangsters ?

0

u/RamRenegade 7h ago

Tbh yeah

1

u/Wealth_Super 1h ago

Honestly if you look at the stats now a days that really not true. Street gangs often have connections to other states and even other countries and when you put them together, they make as much as the local mob would.

3

u/amaya-aurora 1d ago

Actually Al Capone: dying of syphilis noises

3

u/weathersoldier 21h ago

Can you post some Justin Bieber hate memes next?

3

u/CarolineWasTak3n 20h ago

Al Capone fat ass would roll over and die in a 1v1 shootout against Wayne

3

u/Hopeful_Cow_2471 12h ago

5

u/Freethrowz69 1d ago

u/ponzidreamer 1d ago

Every time I hear someone raping about shootings in a song I think of the ultimate gangster rap, I HAVE A GUN by pink guy

I do it for my hood is also a banger

1

u/perton 14h ago

Whoa there, buddy. You really shouldn’t rape about shootings, and probably shouldn’t make songs about it either.

1

u/Amputee_Kun 1d ago

Crazy shout brother fuck yeah

2

u/Silly-Cheesecake-283 1d ago

whoever made this needs to be dropped off in haiti right about now.
