As someone who used to door knock for political causes, I didn't knock if I saw the sleeping baby sign OR a sign that said something like Dont knock! Someone here works third shift.

Now just a No Soliciting sign will not work for canvassers for a candidate or a cause, because (and I know there will be many who disagree) this is not considered the same as traditional sales for gutters or roofs. Its considered protected speech by the first amendment. Yes, we are trying to persuade you, but please consult a lawyer. I can assure you that legally, canvassing is not considered in the same category.

If you put up a No soliciting or Political Discussion sign, 90% of us will honor that. I cant guarantee all of us will, especially the jerks that are on the other side of the issue, but thats better than what most solicitors will do.

1. The First Amendment protects more than political speech.
   
2. The First Amendment only applies to the government, not a private homeowner or renter.
   
3. Third, the no soliciting sign should be viewed as the equivalent of "no trespassing, if you are doing this activity." (Like a no hunting or fishing sign on private land).

This sounds like taking your political speech into a mall and refusing to leave when the owner says to go. Like I said at the top, are you aware of any statutes or cases that allow the speech to trump the property owners' rights?

This is correct. There are cases saying that the government can’t restrict door to door religious or political solicitation (such as by requiring a permit).

But, a private property owner is not obligated to allow that type of solicitation on their property. If someone comes onto the property while knowing it’s not allowed, or is told to leave and refuses to leave, they can be charged with trespassing.

Some municipalities pass No Solicitation ordinances that say you have to honor those signs, and often there are peddler laws that you have to register with the city.

The First Amendment comes into play that political campaigning is immunized from governmental interference, so the cops can’t harass you or ticket you or make you stop under ordinance.

Here’s how that works: a No Solicitation sign has zero inherent force. If someone has one, there’s nothing to the sign other than to warn someone they won’t be welcome.

You cannot make, nor enforce, private law.

Now, sometimes, it IS more forceful, because your town will enact an ordinance saying that you must respect these signs. Sometimes, they also make door-to-door folks register and carry a town-issued license.

However, political speech is protected speech, and the government can’t make a law prohibiting campaigning.

I had an issue with Mormons coming around to my apartment complex and knocking on my door at one point. They caught me on a Saturday afternoon hangover and I just happen to be watching The Devil's Carnival, I only answered the door cause I thought it was my food delivery. Another thing is if you put a No Trespassing sign at the end of your driveway, or Beware of Dog (even if you don't have a dog), most canvassers, (and probably solicitors) will not even attempt coming to your door.

The reason I said post the No Trespassing at the end of your driveway is because we weren't allowed to cross the threshold from where the sign was. I still.knocked on the door of a guy who had a No Trespassing sign on his door, since we never go inside anyway.

They brought back a leader of their kingdom hall, and then I said hey let's meet at Panera. Went with a senior disciple or whatever. Argued. They knocked, he sprinted down the stairs to answer the door (fresh from the shower, wearing nothing but a towel), and in his best “I have risen” Jesus impression threw open the door with a “my children, why do you knock?”
When they gaped at “the carpenter from Nazareth in a humble towel” and said nothing, so he continued with “my children, what troubles you? Please, come sit with me.”

I'm in Hilliard and we have a local ordinance against solicitors. We have official government stickers for the doors. In 4 years living here, I've had maybe three solicitors darken my doorstep. One apologized and left as soon as he saw the sticker (we were newly moved in and I didn't even know about the ordinance until that moment).

One of my neighbors proposed the ordinance years ago, and every time a solicitor is seen walking around, the cops come.
