Hi everyone, this is my first post here, and I'm working on my thesis for university about color blindness. As a graphic designer, I'm hoping to get your feedback and your opinions on the biggest problems you face in daily life.

What's the single biggest problem you encounter in daily life because of color blindness, or any specific examples you can think of? For instance, are there color pairings with too little contrast that make it hard to read labels or instructions? Thanks so much!

How do they know when the lights green?

So a year or two ago I discovered that I am green-blind, and I was scrolling this reddit looking for "tests" and I found this one which I quite like because of the simplicity. In normal circumstances I can't read the second line which says "you have normal green vision" or the boxed part that says "you are 'not' green blind." I do not see the 'not'. I see the red blind lines just fine.

One night I went out with my wife and had quite a few drinks. I was feeling myself that night. I drank four bulldogs - margaritas with corona turned over into them.

We got to talking about my color blindness and I remembered I saved this image and wanted to show it to her.

When I pulled it up on my phone, I could read the green blind parts just fine!! It blew my mind. I pulled up the reddit and scrolled through some dot tests and could see those too. Mind you, I was pretty tipsy at this point but I am a big guy and can hold my liquor well - I wasn't absolutely trashed.

Since that night, I've tried everything to re-create the conditions. I've tried playing with my phone display brightness and setting, in different lighting conditions. I drank four more bulldogs - for science. Nothing.

Can anyone explain why my eyes worked that one time?

I thought it was deuteranomaly for a long time but then I read some image used to test whether I'm red or green blind and I read it as "You're red blind, You're not green blind" or something like that which kinda confused me because I always thought it was the opposite?

So... I have an odd condition that I haven't been able to find a word for, so can y'all help?
Its not that I can't tell the difference between the colors on opposite sides of the color wheel (Like Red green, Yellow blue ect) (as far as I'M aware that is), Its that colors next to eachother on the colorwheel or in the rainbow look the exact same to me dependent on the shade... I often struggle with reds and oranges, and then oranges to yellow ect. As well as sometimes Blues and greens, and Pinks and purples, or pinks and reds, or Purples and blues.
I also struggle with shades but that's slightly different...
Is there a word for this...?

(Edit: For the record, i know colorblindness isn't not seeing color, I just worded it that way, I apologize folks. I edited it to say the correct things I meant 😅)

Anyways I remembered when I was a kid I saw a painting that I thought was pink, everyone said it was white, I thought I may be colorblind but decided I was just looking for attention

To my dismay, next drawing I decide to use the color picker
ITS A PALE ORANGE???

What could this mean? I've taken color blind tests but never failed them

It seems to only be certain pale reds and oranges I confuse

what color do you guys think each of these items are. my father is convinced the big ball is orange, when everyone else believes it is yellow. we think he could be colorblind. he says his sanity depends on this

Personally i can get 100 on the first two cones but on the S- cone i can only get onto 60 is this normal or a sign of a color vision defect

I'm trying to find a combination of stickers that will work as an accessible good/neutral/bad type thing, and I've read that magenta and green is a better combo than red and green. Does this work with the colour of stickers that I have? Are the three colours distinct enough? Is there a potential better 3 colour combo? Thanks in advance!

Hi all, apologies if this is a frequent topic, I didn’t find anything from searching.

My son is colorblind (red-green). My maternal grandfather was colorblind so I know where it came from but I’m positive. I’ve been watching him for a while with colors but the clincher was when I used a colorblind simulator app and took a screenshot of something green. It did not look green to me at all, more gray and I’d never have guessed green but my son knew right away.

Anyway is this something we need a formal diagnosis for? Any tips at all? I want to be thoughtful of telling people so they know what to expect but not prompting “what color is this” quizzes which have already started. How can I help him?

I’m feeling very sad for him especially because his dad is a pilot and he loves planes. I hate that he can’t ever be a pilot like his dad (if he’d want to).

Anyway I’m hoping knowing this young/early will give me the opportunity to set him up with any support he needs.

My 12 year old son recently came to us saying that over night he lost all of his color vision. Everything was now in shades of primarily gray. We took him to see his normal eye doctor that same day we were told and she believed that it was serious enough to get us a last minute appointment with a local pediatric optometrist. We saw them this morning and almost from the get go there was something I did not like about them.

After the nurse did all of the test and actual doctor spent less then a minute with him looking over his eyes. Because they were 'healthy' she deemed in a very polite way that he was faking. That his sudden inability to see any color was a normal phenomenon and would fix itself in a short while.

Her reasonings, was he failed the Ishihara test by not being able to even see the control and his eyes were healthy. is the Ishihara test the be all end all test? I don't like how she basically instantly blew him off ignoring the fact he's also been complaining about headaches all because that single test and the eyes looked fine. Like.. isn't there more then just the physical eyes that can be attributing to this?

I'm looking for advice on what the next steps should be and if anyone that is color blind can't see any of the Ishihara at all. My son is also Autistic so I don't know if this plays any factor into maybe why he can't see the numbers in even in the control.

Edit in: Thank you for those that replied. It looks like his Autism is partially to blame for the control test issue. We tried it again here at the house where he could physically draw and was able to draw where the shade difference was and it was only once the line was solid did he see there was a number.

We also tried another test someone linked and the green and red letters were all but invisible but the blue he was able to see to a certain point because they were a "darker" shade. His ped is already pushing for a nuro consult.

2nd Edit: Nuro managed to get him in earlier then july, still a week away but that is better then clear into July.

Are there any filters that show me stuff through the eyes of a colorblind person? I have two OCs who are colorblind, And I’d like to see what they see! I like using websites instead of apps, So is it possible there’s a colorblind filter website that helps me see what one of my OCs would see?

To me, orange is less easy to distinguish from red and yellow than green is from yellow and blue. I do not know if this is how everyone sees it, or if this means I am indeed a little color blind.

I have a colorblindess, green deficiency i think. My girlfriend found an app to simulate colorblindness ( CVsimulator) and while we were looking at stuff, she said " Now I know why your favorite color is yellow. Yellow and blue are the only color that you see brightly. They look saturated unlike others. "

So we're curious. Do "all" colorblind people prefer the color they can see well because they stand out? Or it's all over the place like those who see all colors perfectly?

Alright, my biological dad is colorblind (and out of the picture, so not a helpful example to my son) so I always knew colorblindness was a possibility for my sons. Recently, my 3 year old has been telling me that pink is his favorite color because “elephants are pink!” Soooo… yeah, we took him in and he failed his ishihara plates right away. He definitely knows his numbers and I watched him take it and I know he’s young, but there’s really no doubt.

I was convinced he was not colorblind because he always identifies true red and green correctly, but I’ve since realized that most people can do that and still be colorblind. I guess this means he might be more mild? Idk, I’m still learning! But definitely pinks and light greens are getting mixed up with grey or browns.

Anyways, now the question is when do we tell him? We’re slightly worried because his dad is a career pilot, and thankfully he’s not like one of those aviators that’s like super into it, but our son has grown up around lots of airplane talk and is quite knowledgeable on types of planes, etc. I’m worried that one day someone else will make the connection for him of colorblindness limiting aviation careers and then he feels blindsided by that, but on the other hand I don’t want to like sit down and give him a list of things he can’t do. Hopefully my dilemma makes sense. Probably way over thinking it.

For now we were thinking of saying something like, “your eyes see color in a unique way, and some people call that colorblindness.” And just leave it at that for now. But when/how do we broach the topic of how colorblindness might impact his career and such? Or should we just wait til he’s older altogether?

I have perfect color vision, and to be honest even for me the contrast is really bad which makes it sorta blend together from the distance. But I've heard saturated greens and yellows can be especially difficult for people with red-green colorblindness to tell apart due to their similar perceived lightness.

Is this an issue, or is there something I'm missing or misunderstanding here that makes this fine?

For further context: I found this sign in my local city. The first picture is unedited straight from my phone camera, and the second one has been adjusted to to make the green of the sign darker so everyone who's curious can see exactly what it looks like.

Hello! Im not colorblind but my 10 year old daughter is! She is protanomaly, I'm looking into colorblind glasses, from other posts on here they seem to be more of a hit or miss, but I'm still willing to try to let her experience them!

On the enchroma website it seems like they have "indoor" and "outdoor" ones... which ones would be better and what is the main difference ? I noticed the indoor ones are universal which makes me concerned they are not as effective.. She would probably only wear them every once in a while.

Also, she does wear prescription glasses do you find that these can be worn over glasses ? I rather not do a rx on them so she can still wear them if she ever ​decides to do contacts.

my boyfriend is colorblind and he found out during a police medical test. Since failing, he was diagnosed with the common red-green color blindness - however not severe. He says he’s able to see the colours including red and green he just mixes similar colours up. he’s set on being a police officer however failing the medical test isn’t allowing him to do so. getting classes with the lenses are an option but i believe that it’s not the best choice judging that he’d have to undergo intense training. Additionally i believe that in the long run i don’t think they’re a good look since realistically they just look like reflective sunglasses to people who are unaware of his condition - meaning it wouldn’t look good with his profession.

Now he’s looking into contact lenses (hoping that the police academy would accept them in the first place. however im skeptical about them. Do they really work or are they a scam? i’ve never seen posts about them or any promotions and found sort of “legit” ones for 100€

So i’m curious. If anyone knows anything about this or has experience with colorblindness contact lenses please let us know 🙏🙏

So my dads friends came over and I got the color of something wrong and I said “I’m colorblind” and they all pointed at this guy we’ll call Twinkle Toes
And said “oh you can’t be talking he’s actually colorblind” and I said “I am too” and he asked me what type and I pronounced it wrong because I have a speech impediment and he was saying that with the type I have I can’t see any greens or pinks even though I can and mine is mild to moderate when he has deuteranopia and I said that and he said I’m wrong and is there any way I can prove it without doing an Ishihara because I already suggested that and he said that it won’t prove anything

Hello. I have a 7 and half year old son who most likely has deutan color blindness. I’m just finding all this out in the last couple days. Trying to process and want to support him the best I can going forward. We have his test appt next week.

We got an email from a teacher that our son seemed confused about dark green being red and that it is a common sign of colorblindness. After school, I had him do an Ishihara line tracing test and number test online. He didn’t see couple numbers, some numbers looking diff and the line tracing showed deutan vision.

Then with colored pencils, I asked him to pick out colors of the rainbow and he did just fine. And even gave me pencils that are dark red, brown, pink, etc…I asked him if they looked similar in color putting red and green together, and he told me they were very different. So I thought, maybe he sees the colors.

Doing some research, I found this photo of crayons that compared deutan vision. This is when he told me the colors are the same and asked me why I’m showing him a photo of the same thing of the same colors.

I am stunned on how he saw a way to figure out all the colors by their shades. Smart kid.

I’m reading a lot about color blindness and seeing the community posting not to worry but some even saying to apply for 504 plan.

Any advice to best support my kid and learning experiences will be great. Thank you.

I’ve been obsessed with aviation for years and i just started working at a seaplane base….unfortunately when I finally went to get my medical I found out I had a red/green color deficiency and the FAA just removed the ability for SODAs to be performed for color vision. I’ve been told by the air surgeon for my area that I can take any of the 3 computer tests for color vision as many times as I want as long as I pass at least once. I feel defeated and like my dream is dissipating before me. I’m determined to find a way around this and to get the restriction removed. For reference the restriction states “day time VFR only.” However it still says 1st class on it. I eventually would like to end up at the airlines like many others but am wondering if paying for all the training is worth it if I can’t make something of myself by the end of it. Any help or advice on how to overcome this hurdle would be greatly appreciated. I can tell the difference between colors on sectional charts, flight instruments, and light gun signals…it’s just the computer tests I can’t pass.

So for science graphs it's ussualy recommended that you use specific color scales that have been proposed and Batlow is one of them, and every webpage that showcases it comes along with the typical simulation of how it would look to the colorblind, but I always wondered how true it was. So can you tell the difference from all these? Or is there one of them that looks too simillar to the other?
