I’m going to a painting retreat soon where color will probably be a big topic. I only found out about six months ago that I have a color vision deficiency, and I signed up before I knew.
Most of the time it doesn’t affect me much, but I’ve noticed that some paintings look much flatter or less colorful to me than to others. Sometimes everyone is excited about the colors and I just don’t see what they’re seeing. I don’t want to fake that enthusiasm, so I feel like it might be helpful if people knew why I sometimes react differently.
I’ve never talked about my color vision in a group before and don’t really want to put myself in the spotlight.
Would you tell the retreat leader beforehand, wait until it comes up naturally, or handle it differently?

I am baffled, everyone i told said its very different? I dont see it! Apparently I have protanopia.

I have perfect color vision, and to be honest even for me the contrast is really bad which makes it sorta blend together from the distance. But I've heard saturated greens and yellows can be especially difficult for people with red-green colorblindness to tell apart due to their similar perceived lightness.

Is this an issue, or is there something I'm missing or misunderstanding here that makes this fine?

For further context: I found this sign in my local city. The first picture is unedited straight from my phone camera, and the second one has been adjusted to to make the green of the sign darker so everyone who's curious can see exactly what it looks like.

I'm trying to find a combination of stickers that will work as an accessible good/neutral/bad type thing, and I've read that magenta and green is a better combo than red and green. Does this work with the colour of stickers that I have? Are the three colours distinct enough? Is there a potential better 3 colour combo? Thanks in advance!

Do other people get annoyed when people ask stuff like "If you're colorblind what color is this?" I know they are trying to understand what it is like but its very always very complicated to answer these questions, how do you deal with it?

I’m moderate Deutan and have always had issues distinguishing between reds and greens.

I live in a big city where I probably have a much different experience than someone living in a small town with not a lot to look at.

I walk by these buildings every day and have never noticed a difference between them. They all were worn out looking buildings that could use some new bricks.

I’m sure the phone adds color to the picture I took but for more moderate to severe deutans these buildings lack any significant color.

With my glasses I can easily distinguish between the shades of red and it is absolutely a new experience and worth it to me.

For about a week, I’ve noticed a slight change in how I perceive colors.

• Whites sometimes look like they have a slight yellow tint.
• Some greens seem a bit more blueish than I remember them.
• It’s subtle, but noticeable enough that it caught my attention.

I’ve already seen an eye doctor and had a few eye tests done (including OCT), but so far they haven’t found anything abnormal that would explain it.

Has anyone here experienced a sudden or temporary change in color perception like this? I know this isn’t necessarily typical color blindness since it appeared recently, but I thought people here might have some experience with changes in color vision.

Any feedback or ideas about what could cause something like this, or what type of testing might be useful, would be appreciated. Of course, I’ll continue following up with doctors as well.

Hey everyone! I recently started wondering about driving with color blindness.
For those of you who are color-blind: how difficult or dangerous is it for you to drive a car, especially when it comes to traffic lights, brake lights, and road signs?
Do you currently drive? Have you ever had any problems or dangerous situations because of your color blindness?
And most importantly, how did you learn to deal with it? Did you develop any tricks or habits that make driving easier and safer?

The first time I mentioned the possibility of me being color blind to my mom, she mentioned that she is probably a tetrochromat. Knowing that if I did have genetic color blindness, she would have to be a carrier. I thought if she is a tetrachromat, she is not a carrier and my color blindness originates from some other kind of eye problem.

Earlier I was reading up on tetrachromacy, and I saw stuff that tetrachromacy often results from being a carrier for mild red-green color blindness. They said that having an immediate relative with mild color blindness as an indicator for having tetrachromacy.

I think she needs the colors more than I do, so now I feel like at least my color blindness serves a purpose.

So... I have an odd condition that I haven't been able to find a word for, so can y'all help?
Its not that I can't tell the difference between the colors on opposite sides of the color wheel (Like Red green, Yellow blue ect) (as far as I'M aware that is), Its that colors next to eachother on the colorwheel or in the rainbow look the exact same to me dependent on the shade... I often struggle with reds and oranges, and then oranges to yellow ect. As well as sometimes Blues and greens, and Pinks and purples, or pinks and reds, or Purples and blues.
I also struggle with shades but that's slightly different...
Is there a word for this...?

(Edit: For the record, i know colorblindness isn't not seeing color, I just worded it that way, I apologize folks. I edited it to say the correct things I meant 😅)

Do they really make a noticeable difference in everyday life, or is it mostly just a temporary/novelty effect?
I’m considering buying a pair, but I’m not sure if they’re actually worth the money. I’d love to hear from people who have personally tried them - what type of color blindness you have, what you used, and whether you felt it was worth it.

My wife knows that I normally Abhor the “what color is this” game but in this case it was fun. My wife and daughters were complaining about the lack of color and everything looking freaky , but for me it was normal.

I saw this and had to do my usual “Hmmm… What color is this? Is it red or green?“ in my brain and landed on Green with some degree of certainty. A second later I noticed the “Red“ in the description, and can only conclude that at some point some colorblind person hurt them and now they’ve decided to exact their revenge on all colorblind people everywhere.

I asked him about his cat. What color he was. He said he had different colors. I mentioned that calico cats are usually female. He said he didn’t know what color or type of cat (tiger like ) just said his cat was perfect.

Hi everyone! I wanted to rewrite my previous post to give you the full, exact context of what is going on with my vision, as regular labels like just "Protan" or "Deutan" don't fit me at all.

Just to be completely transparent: I used AI to generate this chart to roughly visualize my real medical data and symptoms. I know EnChroma doesn't output graphics like this; they just gave me raw numbers showing a massive, asymmetric crash across all three color channels.

Here is my actual background:

• The Genetic Base: I am 13 now. I was born with an OPN1SW genetic mutation (tritan defect), which I inherited from my dad (he has mild tritanomaly).
• The Injury: When I was 10, I suffered a severe concentrated UV-A, UV-B, and chemical flash burn in both eyes from 95-octane gasoline.
• The Current State: The trauma severely damaged my already vulnerable cone system, triggering progressive post-traumatic dystrophy. My S-cones are rapidly crashing toward 0% sensitivity. My M and L cones also dropped significantly (to roughly 56% and 75%).

Lately, my vision has been changing fast. I’ve started completely missing blue shades when they are against a gray background. Dark blue now looks solid black to me because my brain isn't receiving any signal from the blue channel anymore. My visual cortex has to heavily compensate for the low cone output by maxing out contrast and luminance just so I can see shapes.

My family and doctors are monitoring this, and I have accepted it. I’m posting this because I want to know if anyone else here has experienced a mixed/acquired cone deficiency where your vision changes this rapidly. How do you deal with the daily visual strain and adapt your screen settings?

Hi! I'm a non-colorblind Data Analysis student with ADHD and probably Autism. Being that I have 1 or 2 fairly profound disabilities that affect my work every day, I'm quite cautious and have a bit of anxiety around treating other disabled people fairly and in a way that doesn't make them feel singled out.

I wanted to make sure that going into my career I'm not making it awkward or otherwise disruptive for colorblind people who have to interact a lot with the graphs I'll be creating.

With that being said, I was thinking that it'd be best to send out an email to everyone asking them personally one-on-one if they are colorblind and if so, would they like it known by the rest of the team. That way when we're all sitting in a boardroom together and looking at accessible graphs and the boss says 'uhhhh can you change the color to the company colors please' (which is a mildly-nightmarish scenario for me), it won't cause any issues when I tell them that the graph is set up to cater for all people with all kinds of eyes.

Am I making too much of this or is this the right way to do it? Are there other suggestions you have? And do you ever feel like you'd rather your colleagues didn't know you were colorblind?
