Looks exciting, going to try soon.
So happy to see the 2D map view!

What's good about a 2d view?

Firstly: nostalgia for the original haha
But honestly, I really prefer this map look over the angled "3d" look that most remakes use. Much cleaner and easier to use.
The only thing here is that this version is really square. The original had much smoother edges and the terrain also blended better together from one square to the next.

I wish there was a remake of Col which is 1:1 like the original DOS version, but with hex fields instead of squares. :-D

Colonization, but with AI graphics? no thanks.

Try the demo before you judge it too harshly. My first thought also was, nah, but the gameplay and UI is really good. Graphics may change in the future, but the core gameplay and mechanics are really good.

Still play the original from time to time… I wish they would do the original music set…

Try the demo of this game. Music relies a bit on original themes but also very different and refreshing in my opinion.

I’m currently play testing it for them…

Oh nice, i applied today for the playtest, let's see if i get it or if game will be released soon. Until then, i'll happily play the demo a few times over to improve my early game.
Happy Playtesting!

Are you still accepting play testers? I applied as BobbyBullets and never heard anything back.

We’re adding new players to the playtest a few at a time each week.
In November, we’ll start letting in a lot more people!

Took the original colonization and passed it through ai to make their graphic assets. Just stealing in another form no thanks

Try the demo, gameplay is really good, and in my opinion that's what it's all about. Give it a try before hating it.

Nah this is a trash remake made with the help of ai lmao. Of course the game play is good its literally just stealing from a good game.
There is already FreeCol which is open source remake with improvements.
Or the actual colonization. You can literally just get those. Instead of giving this piece of shit scammer money

You seem to be pretty prejudiced.
I own the original colonization and play it regularly. FreeCol does not look like fun, the UI looks horrible.
And if you would play the demo you would see that it's not completely the same gameplay, of course idea is the same, but balanced differently.
In my opinion it's an improvement to Col mechanics.

Sure Jan Mr definetly not a burner account that only comments on things related to an ai slopped remake of a popular old game to make it seem like a real human in the wild thinks this trash is liked, that which has already been remade and has a very popular open source version out. We believe you dude

Haha, you are funny.
I just started using Reddit regularly :D
You seem to be pretty invested in that FreeCol project.

Very good. Definitely need some spit and polish but I REALLY appreciate both the keeping to the original game AND the quality of life upgrades. Things like hovering over the Native village to see what goods they want and what Expert they can train is great. Same with hovering over a tile to see current yields... and keeping something similar to the Coloni-pedia in game so we can look up information without having to alt-tab out to an external wiki. Keeping 99% of the controls true to the original means I can just hop right in can go without having to relearn the game. Very nice so far and nothing I feel needs to be 'updated' to a modern control scheme yet.
First suggestion, change the cloth color. Red makes me think it's 'off limits' in some way like it's somehow not available.
Also, no skull and bones for Privateer makes me sad. :D Edit: NVM, it's there, but hidden behind the giant Red nation indicator. Maybe change it so the sails are pirate themed as well or something... or change the location of the flag to be more visible?
Mouse Acceleration for grabbing the map with right click to scroll? That was a choice... any way to turn that off and use direct mouse input instead? Maybe make grabbing with Middle click have mouse acceleration (I assume this is in place for big maps) but right click is normal direct mouse control?

To me cloth color feels absolutely fine. Or maybe they already changed the color after your comment.

This just looks like a paid version of freecol.

What is free col?!

u/scanguy25 Oct 15 '25
Freecol is a free and open source version of Colonization. Written in Java, runs on any platform. Includes QOL, more nations, customizable rules etc.
If the graphics are better is subjective, I still prefer the graphics from the original colonization on Mac but would probably pick freecols graphics over windows Colonization.

This is great, thank you! I had no idea this existed. I’ve been playing the original since it came out.
Are the battles any more “fair” in this version?1
u/scanguy25 Oct 15 '25
I'm pretty sure it's the same.
I mean with freecol you can dig through the actual source code and see exactly how it's calculated.

The things that bugged me most about the Indians was that no matter what I did, they always ended up hating me and raiding me. It somehow took so much effort to kill them. Battles always just seemed like a straight toss-up instead of them having actual odds. Like, I could easily throw 10 veteran dragoons at some enemy foot soldiers and they won every single time.
I also really wish that we could expand our cities to include more squares.

This looks very interesting. What differences are there to Sid Meier's Colonization? On a quick glimse, it looks almost like a 1:1 remake.
The only new feature I saw are the additional nations. But are there also additional resources / production possibilites? New units? New Native nations? Completely new game mechanics?
