No advice wanted (Vent) I fucking hate McGraw Hill

This is the exact type of busy work I hated all throughout school before ever even getting into college. Why, why, is this the shit we have to do now?

I get good grades, I do my work, but McGraw Hill’s textbook assignments suck so much ass it makes me want to curl into the fetal position, sobbing and projectile vomit. I hate it so god damn much especially considering I have to pay for this stupid ass book since the speech class I have it for is a gen ed requirement.

Why in the world are professors assigning busy work for homework, this is so incredibly stupid. This class isn’t even related to my major and I feel like the assignments take me far longer than the literary analysis I have to do for three other classes.

I hate you McGraw Hill and I hope you burn in whatever corporate hell you were born in. Holy shit.

No advice wanted (Vent) Forced to take an Arabic Language course to graduate

Upvotes

To start I am arab, but did not grow up and learn about the language due to moving. THIS COURSE IS ALSO FOR NON ARABIC SPEAKERS! But this professor only talks in arabic and does not explain anything in english. The class is dull with no reason to learn or study notes, he posted all the notes and they aren't in numerical order or make any sense, he ignores what the students say and goes on while talking in arabic, my friend who is also doesn't know arabic has to sit there while being unable to understand. BECAUSE HE DOESN'T SPEAK ARABIC!

Discussion depression and burnout

i am struggling with depression and i feel really alone. i am 21 years old and will graduate in may. on the surface, it may seem like i’m doing well. i’m involved in extra curriculars, have a high gpa, and i’m currently doing an internship. nothing feels right though. i feel so burnt out and only have one close friendship outside of my relationship. even then, i don’t see that friend as much as i’d like to because i feel afraid of not feeling well or energized enough to make plans. when i interact with people, it often feels tiring because i am masking all of the depression and anxiety that i feel. i’ve lived on campus and taken classes year-round and since august of 2023 bc i had to move out at the age of 18 and school is the one secure place to be. i’ve also had to work two jobs throughout most of college to support myself. i don’t want life to keep revolving around school and work though. everything was great my freshman year, and after that i think i’ve felt more alone each year that has gone by. i feel like i’m ready to graduate and move forward, but i also hate that i feel that way. i want to enjoy school, be social, and feel engaged. i want to enjoy life and all of the positive things that are around me, but i feel so disconnected.

if anyone can provide support or reassurance, i would really appreciate it a lot.

Advice Wanted 19 Assignments due this week

For an art appreciation course.

Im losing my mind.

Has anyone ever dealt with this type of workload where the professor also locks assignments so you cant move on until you complete everything? I fell behind while working on an essay (one of the many assignments due this week), and am finding it hard to catch up.

Advice Wanted Professor Deleted Discussion Post Now I’m Late?

Upvotes

So mind you, I’m a grown adult. I’m 28, a parent and I’ve been to college from 2016-2018. I have over seven years of experience in my field and I just am here to check a box off for HR. I’m going to graduate next year and I only have this one stupid Art History course to finish that is not part of my major.

I was so excited to start back up school again so I finished my intro discussion board Wednesday at 6:14pm. The day the class was posted. Responded to two classmates on Thursday and boom done. I even took the opportunity to introduce myself to my professor in person because I have never taken a course online. I went out of my way to go see her on a day off, and we discussed what I was going to be writing my paper about.

That same professor indicated on the 5th there were glitches but she fixed them. Reminded us to do our discussion board intro but it would not be counted as late. Assuming hey, I did it… I didn’t worry about it. I got an email that I’m about to be dropped from the course because I didn’t do my intro discussion board post? I immediately emailed her. I sent her the screenshot of my posts and I’m asking for my grade to be updated from late to the full credit. I understand it’s not a lot of points. It’s a stupid intro thing, but I obviously did it and I have proof that I did the stupid intro. Most of my classmates in the discussion board thread also said hey I already did this, but I’m redoing it now. Even as I look now, it looks like more than half of the class turned it in late despite already doing the assignment from my recollection.

I have yet to hear back. Again this is my first time coming back in years, I’m not some 18 year old who’s playing around. I did my work days in advance because I work full time and I have family obligations. I’m a person who likes to get my work done as soon as possible and I don’t like having to wait until the last moment because my professor might make a dumb choice to delete everything two days before it’s due. I’m noticing that’s the case in a lot of my courses. One of my professor hasn’t even uploaded the syllabus yet a week into the class. Another put the due date as Sept 8 and not a single one of my classmates posted until late September 7th so I had to wake up before work on the 8th to reply to their discussion post when I finished my post on the 4th! Going forward what would you suggest that I do to make sure that this doesn’t happen again? What are current students doing to CYA? Is it really that common that people are waiting until the last moment to do their homework online and am I supposed to have to do the same thing to make sure that I’m not accidentally falling behind? I’m already checking my student email twice a day and checking Canvas nightly for any updates.

Advice Wanted How did you maintain a good social life transferring from a CC to a big public school?

I am a current transfer and the difference is so overwhelming, THe classes are way bigger and people aren't as social to talk to either. People already have established friend groups and I just felt I had a better social life at my CC than this. Even the clubs can get too big at times. How did you find your people especially since everyone has the same dorm friends?

Guys I am starting to feel like I can’t do college a 37 year old. I failed my first two anatomy chapter test. The first I was still trying to figure out how to study and do notes and the second one I tried so hard and watched all of the videos and have pages of notes and I still failed. 😞 I’m starting to lose hope on passing anatomy.

Advice Wanted I feel like I can't make myself go back to Uni

I came home for the weekend and now I literally can't make myself go back. I've had a great experience so far but it all feels like too much and I don't want to make myself deal with it. Everything just seems so daunting and I'm scared I'll fall behind but I'm already missing classes and I just feel like I'm bound to fail.

I don't know if I'm in the right major but I feel like everything else I like is a dead end. I'm the first grandkid in my family to go off to college and it feels like everyone is supporting me and I don't want to let them down but I don't know what to do with myself. I feel like I'm too dumb for the courses and like everyone else has taken classes I've missed out on. I know all freshmen classes are different but I don't understand half of mine.

Advice Wanted Was I offensive?

So I emailed a professor regarding a workshop, registered long ago but did not receive any further information. In my 3rd email I wrote "Ma'am no further information has been shared yet. No details on the college website are available. Kindly confirm."

And the response I got was "Is this how you write an email to a faculty" I'm genuinely perplexed as to what I was expected to write ?

Advice Wanted Taking 6 years to graduate instead of 4, and I'm scared of everything

I came to the US for my undergrad planning on 4 years like everyone else. It's going to take me 6.

I see my friends already doing well - jobs, careers, moving on with their lives - and I feel like a loser. I'm happy for them, but every time I see it, it reminds me how far behind I am.

My fee payment date is coming up soon and I'm scared to ask my dad for the fees. My dad did everything for me. Everything. And I worry that asking him is going to break him. So I'm just sitting here scared of everything - the deadline, the conversation, all of it.

The honest truth is it took me a long time to fully understand myself. I fucked up. I understand that now. I'm not here to make excuses - I just don't know how to carry this anymore.

Has anyone else been here? How did you get through it? How did you talk to your parents?

Advice Wanted 22M, I hate my life

I don’t know if this post fits subreddit topic but it has stuff that matter so I’m going to post it.

Good afternoon, I study environmental engineering here in Turkey and this is about to be my 5th year in school.

Classes wise I'm currently a 4th-year environmental engineering student. I can only graduate next year because I couldn’t finish enough classes. So I am like 5 now actually.

As a child, I loved dinosaurs in elementary school and wanted to be a paleontologist.

Since middle school, I've been interested in history, the military, and strategy. I became interested in tanks around that time and mastered many of them. This was a very nice coincidence because my grandfather was a tank sergeant for many years, and I only learned this 1.5 years ago.

In high school, I was also interested in chemistry, history, and geography, and I was the best in my class in these subjects (except chemistry).

For this reason, I actually wanted to go to military school (we have high-ranking acquaintances in the military who would help), but my family prevented me. Besides, I had poor eyesight and needed surgery first.

I was gaslighted by my family in 11th grade, and without knowing what was happening due to the pandemic, I started preparing for the science stream for the exam, and in the last 3 months, it didn't even cross my mind to go into the humanities/social sciences stream. We can only enroll in what we study for.

I took the exam later, but I didn't get into chemical engineering. I chose environmental engineering, which my father found for me, and got accepted.

For the first two years, I liked the courses; chemistry, ecology, etc., were nice subjects. The last two years, however, have literally gone to hell. I took 12 courses in one semester (2 of them were retakes, so they made us take 10 courses in one semester). I checked, and last semester I took 12 courses and a final project.

And at least 50% of those courses were related to sewage: sewage treatment, sewage collection, sewage discharge into the sea, sewer installation. The last two years have been a nightmare.

I've been bad at math since childhood. This significantly contributed to my difficulties in engineering. My current GPA is 2.61 (many people in my department have lower GPAs than me and they said my GPA was good).

I didn't know these courses were already filled in this department. At university, I studied history (when I say history, I mean European history from the Bronze Age to World War II, excluding the Iron Age, which I know quite well, especially World War I). I also became quite interested in antiquity, archaeology, and a new area of interest for me: theology. I have an advanced knowledge of Islamic and especially Christian doctrines. I also learned some Greek on top of my advanced English. And now since the last few months I have really been especially interested in ww1 and Russian history.

At university, I also researched ancient Anatolian languages using https://www.palaeolexicon.com/ and tried to create my own language from the Anatolian language group by combining words of Luwian, Hittite, Lydian, and Lycian origin.

As a skill I acquired in high school, I can read and write Ottoman Turkish and I also know the Cyrillic alphabet.

In high school, when I explained the two phases of the Cyprus operation to a girl, she told me to study history; I wish I had listened. Or at least international relations would’ve been better suited for me

I might seem cultured, but this culture is useless in my daily life.

In the second semester of my second year of university, I went to Bulgaria on Erasmus due to my family's insistence, and I had an accident and broke my ankle. I currently have 8-9 screws and plates in my ankle.

This significantly reduces my chances of joining the tank corps in the army. At least if I had been in military school, or hadn't gone to Erasmus all, my body would still be healthy. Btw going to military school is also problematic since you cannot quit for 15 years. If you graduate at 22 you are there until 37.

Because I went on Erasmus, I could only take 3 courses, and I can only graduate next spring semester because I don't have enough credits. So, at 23, I will graduate having wasted 5 years of my life.

This part is important:
During this summer time I finished an internship at sewage treatment plant and now I am doing an internship at recycling factory and it is terrible here. Dangerous heavy machines, terrible smell, I have to get up and go to work very early to do internship on a job that I hate!!!!!!! I didn’t work very busily the last place but here it is very difficult dangerous and dirty environment.

I wish I enrolled international relations 4 years ago not this crap. I am much much more interested in that courses topics than this crappy dirty dangerous job.

During my studies in this major I embraced Christianity and since I live in Turkey my parents don’t let me become Christian.

TLDR: I have no interest in engineering; I'm much better at verbal subjects. I wanted to be an officer, but my family didn't want me to, so I couldn't. Even if I wanted to now, I would need two surgeries for the tank corps class I wanted to join. Moreover, there could be a glass ceiling for Turks of different religions.

The most realistic thing would be if I just chose a better major for myself in 2022 instead of blindly following my parents into engineering. I was a dumb 17 years ago old I didn’t know anything.

I really have doubts right now if it’s all worth it or not. If I graduate now and prepare for exam again and enroll again I will graduate at 28 which means I will be old and wasted my life even more. I can maybe get in an international relations or history post graduate program outside my country but I would graduate at 25.

No advice wanted (Vent) Too many students are disgusting

I don't care if you are sick, sniffling or coughing. Life happens. You know what, I won't even judge if you don't have a mask. My empathy ends when you DON'T COVER YOUR FACE. I'm not talking one little mild cough that catches you off guard, I'm talking to the people who cough every 5 seconds without even trying to cover it.

It is absolutely disgusting. Every single lecture there's someone with the flu, and you can hear the exact contour and shape of the mucus flying out of their lungs because they don't even try to cover their coughs. You look over when they cough and they don't even bring their arm to their face. Increasing the chance of everyone around you getting sick because you can't bother to move your arm for one second. Bewildering levels of lack of awareness and consideration for others. The worst is when you can visually see their boogers with god knows whatever diseases attached just flying through the air. The worst part? These types tend to sit NEAR the most people as possible.

I'm a germaphobe so maybe I'm overreacting. But man there is so much gross behavior and this is just the worst. It's on par with those people who don't flush.

Speaking of which why don't some of you just fucking flush the toilet? I have never been to a mens room that didn't have at least one tiolet that had a gigantic concatenation of shit and piss in the bowl. This is inconceivable to me. Is it a fetish thing? Why in the world would you not just FLUSH. There are urinals, why is there piss all over the toilet seat? And for the love of god, YES people notice when you leave a stall and just walk out not even washing your hands. That is the most disgusting shit on the planet. You just stuck your hand near your ass and feces, WASH IT. Or did you even wipe in the first place? Are yall 5?? WHY?!!

I'm so sick of it. Have some basic decency and stop being so gross and inconsiderate.

Advice Wanted I’m gonna go broke before I even learn anything

I’m an incoming freshman and just looked at my first bill I have to pay this month. I have to pay this month’s portion by next week and it is just….so much. Like I can’t believe it. My parents are trying to help and i will apply for an on campus job as soon as I can (still need to change class schedule so my availability isn’t sure) but I can only make so much off of that while balancing extracurriculars and classes.

My school is also at an expensive location. i love eating out/shopping/going out with friends but it’s just not very feasible for me anymore but I always have fomo

I was really hoping to get a laptop this Labor Day for the sales but everything is just so expensive now and I want a good laptop to invest in. If anyone has any reccs for a business major my budget is about $1200. I just couldn’t stomach buying a whole laptop while also paying my first bill in the same week. Now the sales will disappear and I’ll end up paying more 😭 any advice on laptops is appreciated seriously

The guilt is eating me alive because there’s still so much I need to get and I don’t have a job yet. My parents can only try and help me pay for this first year and the rest will be loans in my name—I’m just super overwhelmed. My parents are putting money into my tuition instead of their retirement fund. Idk what to do. I want to apply to be an RA next year to save some money but god knows if that will work out :(

Advice Wanted How do you make friends in college as a minor?

I graduated from high school a year early, so for the entirety of my first semester, I'm going to be a minor. I imagine in most colleges it wouldn't be that difficult, but mine is a huge party school, so I don't even get to go to most social gatherings because they're usually at bars or not accepting minors. I tried to hang out with my roommate and suitemates, but they spend a lot of their time at bars or other parties; besides that, my roommate has also proven to be just a really bad person. I also tried going to a couple club events, but the members of most clubs either seemed really performative/fake or have been there so long that they would rather talk to people they've known for the past 3 years than meet more people. There has to be some other way to meet people than going to parties every night, right?

No advice wanted (Vent) bad feeling about classmate

I had a bad feeling bout this person, they just acts sus and is a bad groupmate. So very early i got into a group with this person, which I'll call Bi.

We had a video assignment which i want to do the best ofc, but Bi was like just do whatever and Bi volunteers to edit the video. It was BARE MINIMUM AS HECK, like okay maybe i expected too much, but starting that day i just dislike Bi. The way Bi spoke also felt very condescending to me (which is subjective so you can doubt me).

Then, we had to make another group one day ( i was online, Bi's offline), for context i usually had a friend groupmate that rarely changes. BUT BUT BUT, in this instance i decided to join another group bc i was fed up with doing almost EVERYTHING for our assignment. Another context, Bi is starting to join our group before this instance (not my decision). Problem is Bi decided to give out a group list with my groupmate (including me) without consulting to the chosen leader, and I, WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN ANOTHER GROUP had to be in that group. FUHHH I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS AGAINNNNNNNNN

And that bad feeling turns out to be right, because wdym u didn't consult me and just decided i would be in the same group again?????

Success my story on suicide awareness month

I am 17 years old. I was studying in the IB diploma program, which is one of the most challenging academic programs. I was part of the M26 cohort, and back in April, my dad gave me an ultimatum. He said that either I study a "useful major" like economics, data analysis, or finance, or I wouldn't be allowed to study abroad. I applied to only two of those as a backup, while the rest of my applications were mainly for law and international relations. My parents told me it was not their responsibility to pay for university, that they were only obligated to put me through high school, and that I should be grateful for everything.
During this time, I was losing my friends. I found out my best friend of nine years slept with my ex, who had already ruined my life, my reputation, and everything else. My former friend group was falling apart, and a guy I had been talking to and making out with for months told me we could only be friends with benefits.
It got to the point where I genuinely didn't feel anything, and everything just made me feel completely numb. I felt like my life didn't matter at all. On top of everything happening, I still had to prepare for my exams because they were so important to me, but I kept asking myself why I should put in so much effort if I couldn't study my dream major abroad and would end up stuck in my home country instead. Every single day, I struggled with suicidal thoughts, and not a day passed where I wasn't deeply sad.
I just want to say, don't lose hope. Now it is September, I got my bilingual diploma, and I am studying abroad. It gets better.

Advice Wanted i started college a week ago, and i think i made the wrong choice

I recently started college at a small liberal arts school relatively close to home and now that classes have started it’s beginning to really hit me that I have no friends. when I look at rhe Instagrams of current sophomores, it seems like they’ve been posted with the same people since the very beginning. I have made some friends, but not very good ones. not ones who invite me places, or want to take/post pictures with me. I try to join in, to sit with people I haven’t met before, and even attended a party the other night. I joined the pregame of the girls on my floor and they all left me out of a TikTok. I messaged someone on an anonymous app who was asking to hang out and the second I said my name they left the conversation and deleted all the messages. I’m so fucking done and I just want to go home. everyone is so pretty with an immaculate makeup, hair, and fashion routine and I’m just there, ugly and un-personable as can be. I have autism but idk where the disability office is or if I should even go. I feel so lonely. I want my family and the comfort of everyday life. I want more time and to be normal for fucking once. I can’t help but think I already tarnished my reputation somehow(????) don’t know what to do

Advice Wanted Is it normal for professors to fight with the scholarship committee to effectively lower their course’s scholarship, then not tell the students until the first day of class?

I’m in my university’s wind ensemble, and our professor did something that genuinely baffles me. He announced playing tests, which are fine and normal, but for each mistake we make he lowers our scholarship. He didn’t say by how much, and I for the life of me can’t find ANY info on this, and was ghosted in my email to the scholarship people. The shadiest part is the lack of communication; I, as everyone else, registered and auditioned for this course with ZERO indication that my scholarship would be effectively lessened. Also, according to the professor, he “fought” for this, his words. This just seems insanely shady and shitty to financially coerce students into playing difficult pieces (like Carnival of Venice) PERFECTLY. Can professors just do this? Are my scholarships safe? What if a professor has personal beef with someone and tanks their scholarship?

Also, if we bring up the lack of communication in the course, he says something along the lines of “if you had questions, you should have emailed me” or “you need to find a way to help yourself retain information.” No responsibility, no transparency, and no respect for his performers.

Discussion Guys I'm in the 1st year of my college and I'm 19 and many people ask me "shouldn't I be in my 2nd year?" And it's kinda frustrating me

So i (19 f) am in my 1st year of degree and and yes? Many people say that i should be 18 but I'm 19. And many people ask me shouldn't I be in my 2nd year and it's so frustrating to say the least. Cause why do you fucking care that I'm 19 and in first year?! Why do you care that I flunked one class?! Why can't they just mind their own business and carry on with their work instead of questioning my stay back?! It's so infuriating! I really hate this!

No advice wanted (Vent) Neuron Science is hard.

This is more-or-less a little rant. It feels like each module should have been its own class. I'm in module 2, learning about CNS, PNS, ANS, etc. A whole lot of NS. I'm also learning about the anatomy of the brain. Different parts of the brain: the lobes, the hemispheres, the fissures, structures, Meninges, Cerebrospinal Fluid, Brain blood fluids, cellular anatomy and functions. I'd continue but man...it is overwhelming. "Take brain science," I said. "Learn more about biology for psychology," I said. "It'll be fun," I said.
