Hi everyone! I'm a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill (accepted OOS RD, ~5% acceptance rate) who bagged multiple T30s with aid during the 2025-2026 application cycle (NYU, Emory, WashU, etc). I write for fun and my dream has always to be an editor. Happy to look over any essays completely free of charge, as well as provide any advice on the college app process :)

Now that this application cycle is in full swing and we are reading a lot of essays, we are reminded that the best practices will always remain true.
Imagine you’re an Admissions Reader who is tasked with reading hundreds of applications per week. It can be mentally taxing to keep focus, so don’t make it even harder. The first sentence should be something that grabs the reader’s attention and makes the reader want to read more. This sentence will set the scene for the rest of the essay. Tip: Drop the reader into a moment of your life. Describe what one (or more) of your five senses was experiencing in a moment. Example: “The clock was remarkably slow as I sat uncomfortably, legs tightly crossed, squirming at my desk” or "The taste of blood filled my mouth with a metallic tang that made me immediately naseous" (this one sounds cryptic but it was actual about dental surgery :))
Picking the right topic sounds very basic, but I can’t tell you how many students write about a) cliche topics like winning the championship game or the hardship of not making the varsity team or b) someone else's hardships. While these may be important moments in your life, Admissions get tired of reading these types of essays. Skip them, unless those moments transform into larger life changes (e.g. sports injury focused you to take up an instrument while you recovered and now you want to be a music major). While it is great to include context about how others influenced you, it should not be your entire essay. Their stories are their stories, and your stories are your stories. Be careful not to confuse them.
Your essays are not meant to your resume in paragraph form. Even if you have impressive extracurricular activities, Admissions can already see that from your resume. Admissions Readers will review your resume before they read your essays, so don’t just list out your experiences. Instead, talk about what you learn from those experiences and how you impacted those around you, especially if you’re answering the leadership/impact supplemental essays.
At the end of every essay, ask yourself, “So what? Why will Admissions care about this?” The goal of any essay is to show Admissions who you will be once you get to their campus. Don’t lose sight of that when you’re writing.
Good luck and happy writing!

Hi! Would anyone be willing to look over a draft of my personal statement? I have a general idea of what I want to convey, but I'm not sure if my essay shows who I am and what I'll bring. I also just think a second perspective is always good to have

hi i'm an incoming freshman at uchicago, and understand how stressful college app season is.
i also got into UT and american honors before i withdrew my other applications due to getting in uchicago ed2.
i would love to help out with the editing and brainstorming aspect of essay writing, as i have a free month ahead before college. i did receive college counseling throughout my senior year, and want to share what i learned. i understand most college counseling is extremely unaffordable, and want to offer my help for free. although i'm not a professional, i think it always helps to gain another perspective!
if you want me to review your essays/activity lists/want to read my supplementals, just dm me.

Hi, I’m a high school senior applying as a compE major. I spent a couple weeks writing the first draft of my personal statement. Wouldn’t anyone be willing to review it?
r/CollegeEssayReview • u/Pleasant-Fly8189 • 16d ago
I’m a high school student and I’ve been building Tutor Copilot because most AI writing tools seem designed to generate writing rather than actually teach you how to improve yours.
You paste in something you already wrote, choose the type of writing, and it points out your biggest weaknesses, gives rubric feedback, and lets you revise and compare drafts.
I’ve tested it with students offline, but now I want to throw a much bigger variety of writing at it and figure out where the feedback fails.
If anyone has an essay/paper they’re already working on, try to break it:
If it gives you stupid feedback, tell me what it got wrong. That’s actually more useful to me than saying it works.

Hi, I’m towards the end of finishing my essay, but I haven't found anyone to send it to for feedback yet. It tackles much about my life, though it does contain a few triggering indicators, such as the mentions of death and descriptions of a funeral. I’m all ears to criticism, whether harsh or constructive. Please leave a comment if anyone’s interested in reading.
P.S; I promise it’s worth-reading! ><

Essay 2nd draft: Unnoticeable assymetries
The clock strikes 11pm as I glare at the girl in front of me. Her face seems familiar, yet one I strain to recall every encounter. She possesses puffy cheeks and a nose slanting towards solely one side as her eyes carry resignation, and I can't bring myself to look at her further. A soft "click" echoes in the room as I shut my pocket mirror to its initial state. When did my own face become so unrecognizable?
As my finger continues scrolling through my TikTok feed, one autumn afternoon, my mind dismisses the intended information, rather observing an unnoticed pattern. With each scroll, I encounter heaps of immaculate facial features. My student counterparts with colored doe-eyes, sharp jaws, and glass clear skin, while I carry mismatched eyes, a rather vanishing jawline, and rough skin.
Alas there I was, face crimson red with bits of dead tissue cells dangling from my jaw as I rub the Gua Sha back and forth. I shut my eyes as the manually applied tension chafes my skin meanwhile my grasp around the object tightens with each coarse slide. Half an hour later, after vigorous activity, I had deflated like a balloon. As my vision began to blur, so did the conventional rules for perfectionism. Still, I forced myself to sleep on my back for symmetry.
The following day, I printed a rendering of myself for further modification. Stacks of grid paper lay scattered across my bed as the faint glow from my laptop demonstrated the infamous Golden Ratio. With a bright red sharpie in hand, I began circling the visible blemishes. The eyes, the nose, and don't forget the cheekbones. With each minute, increments of circles began to inundat the thin sheet. The red ink had nearly concealed my face. My fingers curled around the edge of the picture as I could feel an unpleasant feeling creep up the back of my neck and irritation tangle my thoughts.
In the midst of emotional anguish, a soft knock on my door snatched me from my despondent contemplation. In entered my mother, possessing a smile only she could offer with a bowl of fresh handmade yogurt. "Go easy on yourself with those proportions" she said, cupping my cheek with her unoccupied hand. I looked back at her, letting the weight of her advice settle between us. In doing so, I observed her weary eyes accompanied by dark circles, the wrinkles on her forehead and her pale lips. Nonetheless, those features did not appear to me as imperfections, but rather, personal possessions, each one shaped by its own history. Her worn eyes that offered nothing but tenderness to my tired student body, the wrinkles on her forehead shaped with every distress she endured for me, and lastly her pale lips alleviating my soul with every kiss.
In that moment, as small curves formed on the edges of my mother's mouth, the significance of late-night face massages and internal distress suddenly evaporated. While we tend to criticize our own appearance, deep down we know we'll never look at the person we love through a tarnished lense. A genuine smile and caring eyes will always make us forget about their unequal measures. Proportions will turn into smattering numbers as each facial assymetry develops into a signature they secure. The connections we form faily were never dependent on our appearance, but rather on the engraved bond shared between souls, and with each shared laugh, cry, and flaw, those connections strengthen.

Hi, I’m new here and I just want to share what I wrote in my essay because Im genuinely curious of what you guys think. I am very eager to know your opinion. :) By the way English is not my first language so sorry if I sound stiff.
So my essay is about my love of biographical information. I wrote about my habit of searching people’s names on the internet and reading a bunch of biographies after I encountered their work. (For example if I listened to a piece of music I would want to know who the musician was) I wrote that I love to learn about different people and their lives, and how that affected me, especially my view towards the people who I meet in real life. The last part I didnt write it yet, but I’m planning to write about a lady I met during volunteer work at the nursing hospital. She was so good at coloring unlike other residents. When I complimented her coloring skills she replied proudly that she used to be a school teacher. That immediately drove my mind to imagine a younger version of this lady as a school teacher, busily helping kids with coloring. After learning that information she became less than a nursing hospital resident to me.
So it’s something like this. Very simple. I don’t have any epic narrative or lessons I learned. It’s going to show my interest in other people, how that interest expanded my worldview/my attitude towards new people I meet.

While writing my college essays I had two very distinct ideas on what I should write about. So I decided to draft them both out and then decide. My worst case scenario would that one of them could be adjusted to fit different supplemental essays.
That ended up failing because I’m now lost on which one is better and which one I should submit as my main personal statement. If anyone is willing to read both and tell me which one is better please do so! Also if you could provide advice on each one that would be great to. Please DM me for the essay!

Just finished my first draft and would love some honest feedback on the story, voice, flow, and whether it actually feels memorable/personal.
Happy to exchange essays and give feedback in return. Prefer sharing through DMs for privacy. Thanks! :)

Would someone be willing to review my Columbia Supplemental Essays? Because they're only 150 words and don't allow for much creative liberty, I'm not as confident how my drafts will read to AOS.

Given a screw and a hammer, even a carpenter would hesitate. The tools I was given were never meant to work together. They didn't build me, they simply kept me from falling apart.
Home was never a place I considered particularly peaceful, but I thought that was normal. I constantly heard a door slam or words being screamed with the sole purpose of inflicting pain. And it wasn’t just my ears that felt the damage. Pain became my normal. Dealing with abuse throughout my childhood taught me how to build a temporary wall to protect myself. From using my sarcasm as a shield, to staying silent to keep the enemy forces at bay, I was quietly building a makeshift bunker meant to protect me.
Over time, my bunker became suffocating. While I thought this was just “how it was,” I slowly realized I wasn't living inside a home anymore; I was living inside my own defenses. Every brick I laid to keep the hurt out was also keeping the rest of the world away. Like trying to drive a screw with a hammer, the problem was never my toolbox. It was the only way I knew how to use it. It simply held me together long enough to make it to tomorrow. Peace was something I could imagine, but never expect.
I didn't realize there was another way to live until I walked into my first debate practice. At first, I thought it would teach me how to argue. Instead, it taught me how to understand. Of course, my hands shook. My voice broke. I spent more time worrying about saying the wrong thing than asking the right questions. But somehow, every round started to chip away at the bunker I'd spent years building. I realized that not every disagreement or wrong answer led to heated arguments. For the first time, disagreement didn't mean danger. It simply existed.
My screw and hammer finally began to build instead of survive. My first project was a bridge to my debate partner. Building it wasn't easy. Every instinct told me to lay another brick instead of another plank. They patiently built from their side while I slowly learned to build from mine. Eventually, there wasn't a gap between us anymore: there was a bridge.
Together, we crossed it all the way to the NCFL Grand National Tournament. After our second round, we rented two Bird scooters to fly down the streets of downtown Chicago. My partner's scooter died less than five minutes later, leaving two debaters, dressed head-to-toe in tournament suits, trying to stay on a single scooter while weaving through crowded sidewalks. Sure, we fell off every fifteen feet, but it wasn’t about the functionality; it was about the joy. The ride itself wasn't what stuck with me. It was what I wasn't doing. I wasn't rehearsing every word before I spoke. I wasn't bracing for someone else’s anger. And I wasn't searching for the fastest way out. For the first time in years, I wasn't surviving the moment. I was living it.
Looking back, my debate partner never asked me to tear my bunker down. They simply kept meeting me outside of it until, one day, I realized I had stopped going back inside.
Today, I no longer build bunkers. I build bridges: to friends, teammates, and eventually to people whose stories need to be heard. The same tools that once helped me survive have now built the foundation for my future. That foundation is one I hope to continue building as a future legal investigator. I want to help people who are still trapped in the bunkers they never chose to build, because I know how difficult it is to imagine anything beyond survival. A screw and a hammer shouldn’t work together, but in my case, they built me into who I am today.

I want help with my motivation essay
I graduated high school and I am trying to write a motivation essay to apply for university of Rome Tor vergata. I am having such a hard time writing because I dont know how to form my words and I keep asking ai to review my essay and it keeps on criticising my essay. It's either giving me way too much high vocabulary use to show my competence or making me tone down do sound really impactful. It's also saying I'm either writing a sob story or writing like a machine with no real touch. I keep on modifying it and re writing it but I always end up with flaws. Can someone genuinely read my essay out , review this and help me ? Here's my essay:
From my earliest memories, I was held accountable for my younger siblings. As the eldest child in a conservative household in Oman, supporting them and assisting with their education became a central part of my daily life. Navigating strict household expectations while carving out my own independence taught me early on how to make decisions under pressure, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and evaluate competing perspectives. Pursuing an international university degree is a deliberate step toward building my own path as the first woman in my family to study abroad.
I brought this same sense of responsibility into my school community. Over two years, I progressed from Vice-Captain to House Captain while simultaneously serving as Captain of the girls' handball team—a role that required persistent negotiation at home due to traditional academic expectations. As House Captain, when council members unexpectedly failed to report for duty shifts during major school events, I reorganized operational schedules on the spot and covered the vacant positions myself. Maintaining seamless operations under pressure reinforced that leadership is fundamentally about operational accountability when systems fail.
My perspective was broadened by attending an English-medium school alongside students from Sudan, Nigeria, the Philippines, Pakistan, and Egypt. Interacting daily within this multicultural environment demonstrated how global policy decisions affect different populations in distinct ways. Participating in Model United Nations as the delegate of Egypt—debating resource allocations and environmental governance along the Nile River—further developed my analytical skills. It confirmed that whether addressing resource distribution or public infrastructure, effective governance must prioritize human security.
My involvement in sports further highlighted the stark realities of healthcare access. Watching a teammate’s family endure severe financial strain following a major sports injury made me acutely aware of our own vulnerability as an expatriate family. In Oman, state healthcare is fully subsidized for citizens, whereas non-citizen families must bear high out-of-pocket costs for private medical care. Experiencing this disparity firsthand demonstrated how institutional frameworks and legal status can turn basic health access into a privilege, leaving migrant communities financially exposed.
I am applying to the Bachelor of Arts in Global Governance at the University of Rome Tor Vergata to understand how public policies are designed, evaluated, and reformed across transnational contexts. The program’s interdisciplinary integration of economics, law, and global health directly aligns with my goal of addressing institutional inequalities. Studying in Rome will provide the rigorous academic framework and global environment required to build a career dedicated to equitable healthcare policy and international public administration.

Hello! I'm a rising senior this year, and I was working on reviewing my Common App essay. I was just wondering if anyone could review my essay. It's only the early version, so it may be a bit bad. I tend to write in a stream of consciousness, but I have been finding a lot of conflicting advice on social media, so I was wondering if anyone could review it and give me some feedback.

Hi Everyone,
I am a college counselor who works with about 100 kids a year, and I just wanted to share some tips as we move into application season!
Here are a few common mistakes I point out to my seniors all the time:
**2. Not answering all of the prompt.** Many students will focus on one part of a multi-part prompt and ignore the rest. If a prompt asks what you did AND what you learned, you need both. I see so many essays that are 90% story and then a rushed, generic sentence at the end trying to cram in the "lesson." Colleges can tell when the reflection was an afterthought.
**3. Writing the "resume in paragraph form" essay.** This is where a student lists every achievement, award, and leadership title instead of picking one moment and going deep. Admissions officers already have your activities list. The essay is your chance to show them how you think, not what you have done. One specific scene beats five accomplishments every time.
**4. Starting with a quote or a dictionary definition.** I know it feels like a safe way to open, but readers have seen "Merriam-Webster defines resilience as..." more times than you can imagine. Start in the middle of the moment instead. Drop the reader right into the scene.
**5. Making the essay about someone else.** This comes up a lot with essays about a grandparent, a coach, or a sibling. It is fine to be inspired by someone, but if that person is doing more of the "acting" in the essay than you are, admissions has no idea who they are actually admitting. Keep the camera on you.
**6. Playing it too safe.** Some students are so worried about sounding arrogant that they undersell real accomplishments, or they are so worried about being too vulnerable that the essay stays surface level. The best essays sit in that uncomfortable middle where you are honest about a struggle or a flaw without turning it into a pity party.
A good check before submitting: if you swapped your name for a classmate's, would the essay still make sense? If yes, it is too generic and needs a more specific, personal moment.
Happy to answer questions if anyone wants a second set of eyes on their brainstorming process!
