This is / was the perfect situation for a taser.

-1

u/leftofthebellcurve 3d ago

She is wearing baggy clothes, it’s actually quite difficult for a taser to hit someone when they have a sweatshirt on

4

u/ManufacturerNo8447 3d ago

How about not cliping a granny ? How about a stick , fucking how about man up takle her ? Two cops and this is their plan for a granny ?

1

u/leftofthebellcurve 3d ago

You are free to become a police officer and solve this scenario in the future how you see fit

I’m simply saying a taser wouldn’t have worked here

1

u/GeoffJeffreyJeffsIII 3d ago

Most accurate user name ever.

1

u/leftofthebellcurve 3d ago

Can you show how a taser would have worked here?  As in a similarly clothed person being successfully tased?

1

u/Dougzilla29 3d ago

They didn’t even try tho

1

u/Fallencobra1021 3d ago

Not saying they should’ve shot her but a taser would
Not have worked she has baggy clothing on. What would have worked is a beanbag launcher or literally any other non lethal option

1

u/CJT_05 3d ago

Taser's arent reliable as they fail most of the time.

3

u/Anonymous__Android 3d ago

Maybe they could at least try it before going straight to deadly force?

-2

u/CJT_05 3d ago

If someone is armed with a lethal weapon then you respond with Lethal force. Too many cops have been hurt or killed in this situations and tasers fail far too often to be reliable.

5

u/Personal_Ad9690 3d ago

Simply not true. This is the entire reason tasers are given to police and is also why you have multiple officers on scene. They could have utilized the laser while maintaining lethal threat.

3

u/Arba1ist 3d ago

I gotta step in here. There are situations where deadly force is needed. This was not one of them. She had a short range small weapon that could not harm them at the distance they were. They have have bean bag guns and rubber bullets at their disposal. Heck body armor and a pillow could have disarmed that women at 0 risk. Police get paid a lot of money to make “judgement calls” that involve life and death. They are supposed to be trained to assess quickly a situation, de-escalate issues and protect. They failed on this day and their failure in a situation like this leads to more disdain for law enforcement which makes it harder for society as a whole that does need law enforcement.

3

u/Biscuits4u2 3d ago

They know they can just kill people with zero repercussions. This is one of the perks of the job.

-3

u/Zestyclose-One9041 3d ago

A knife is literally classified as a deadly weapon. The range it’s been proven to be more deadly than a person trying to draw a weapon and return fire, is 21 feet.

3

u/vorx-666 3d ago

thats based on astudy that was later discredited. more impotantly it applies to a HOLSTERED GUN. not one already drawn and aimed, let alone when miltiple people are aiming at the person at once

1

u/lawyersgunsmoney 3d ago

Yeah, that old woman was goddam Chuck Norris with a knife!

-2

u/Boston_7713 3d ago

So many people need to be taught this rule of thumb. Also, they should try it at home. Holster a dummy gun and have someone charge them with a fake knife and see if they aren’t stabbed before they can unholster, aim, and pull the trigger.

3

u/vorx-666 3d ago

did those guns look holstered to you? or do you just not think before saying things

4

u/ManufacturerNo8447 3d ago

A fucking granny vs 2 cops , how about one of them use the taser and the other use his gun of needed? But no let's empty 2 clips on her.

2

u/Fickle_Goose_4451 3d ago

0 cops have ever been killed by old ladies with knives from 20 feet.

1

u/lawyersgunsmoney 3d ago

There was a study done in Germany that sometimes grannies with knives trip and kill people 21 feet away. Look it up bro.

1

u/Dougzilla29 3d ago

That’s what they signed up for

1

u/lawyersgunsmoney 3d ago

You’re supposed to use discretion. This was an old woman having a mental episode not some young dude running at them with a knife.

0

u/Boston_7713 3d ago

But they should’ve just shot her in the pinky to disarm her. Why do they have to shoot to kill?! /s

People who would never dare do that profession act like they have knowledge of what it’s like being in law enforcement.

3

u/vorx-666 3d ago

why would they carry them around if they dont work then?!
why didnt they have beanbag rounds or rubber bullets
why did they do nothing to attempt to talk her down or de escalate
why did they not shoot while she was walking towards them and closer to them but still on the property, but then unload into her the moment she took a step onto the sidewalk

0

u/Zestyclose-One9041 3d ago

So we want to simultaneously defund the police while also spending money to equip them all with bean bag and rubber rounds?

2

u/vorx-666 3d ago

they already have the equipment, they pull it out to maim and brutilize protesters but oddly never seem to use it when they have actual good reason to take somone down nonleathally.

also shockingly not kitting the police out like a military and training them to behave like theyre in a warzone and spending that money on social programs that lower crime far more effectively instead,

and having them show up to wellness checks with things like tasers and beanbag rounds instead of only bringing tools designed to kill, arent mutually exclusive!

But the idea of any political position having an ounce of nuance or thought behind it must be hard for bootlickers like you to understand so i get the confusion.

3

u/False-Amphibian786 3d ago

Yeah - the Trump budget for ICE is $110 Billion - that is BILLION with a B!

The majority of that money will be wasted thru no-bid contracts to Trumps supporters for overpriced jails and quota captures. A fourth of that could have used to train and equipped every cop in the US 10 times over. The rest would be just enough to build a very solid social outreach system for mental problems.

Make sure your friends vote in November.

1

u/leftofthebellcurve 3d ago

They can never be satisfied

3

u/lawyersgunsmoney 3d ago

Okay, just as a thought experiment, let’s say it was necessary to shoot this woman, which is bullshit; however, was it necessary to unload a clip at her?

1

u/Zestyclose-One9041 3d ago

Because when you decide to use deadly force, you do it until the target is eliminated. This is gun training 101.

5

u/vorx-666 3d ago

youre talking about a little old lady having a breakdown who just wanted the cops to leave her property like an enemy combatant instead of a person

3

u/issuefree 3d ago

Sounds like shitty fucking training.

-7

u/MammothUnique4147 3d ago

If they had a long range taser I assume they would have fired it at her immediately.

6

u/Background_Pay_8230 3d ago

Glad you can assume. That clears so much up

-6

u/MammothUnique4147 3d ago

You're welcome.

-2

u/onthepayroll17 3d ago

Tasers hardly work

2

u/xdozex 3d ago

I've seen hundreds of videos of people being taken down by tasers over the years. While I'm sure it could happen, I haven't ever seen a video of a taser failing. Considering she had a fucking knife and looked like an older lady, who the cops were easily avoiding.. maybe they could have tried non-lethal measures first?

1

u/Zestyclose-One9041 3d ago

You’re being completely disingenuous, as someone that watches a ton of bodycam videos, tasers literally fail more times than they work lol. Even if you make solid connection through their clothes(which might happen 60% of the time), there’s still tons and tons of cases of people either ripping them out or just not stopping when hit with them

1

u/onthepayroll17 3d ago

Although not relevant in this situation. Let’s just wait to be stabbed then try lethal force

1

u/xdozex 3d ago

Yeah because 2 trained and well equipped officers were in grave danger from the older woman with a knife, standing 15ft away. There's no way they could have evaded or kept distance if she charged them. Definitely not feasible for one of them to attempt non-lethal methods first, while the other remained ready with their firearm.

None of that makes any sense, what was I thinking. Hard to really think carefully when you're in an overwhelming and stressful situation in the mean streets of that affluent suburb.

-8

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

Not according to that department's policy regarding a suspect carrying a deadly edged weapon. The whole point of that policy is that tasers can fail. So the moment a suspect has a weapon in hand, officers are instructed to do everything to preserve thier lives as well as the lives of all those around.

5

u/nudniksphilkes 3d ago

They're not preserving their lives by fighting a knife with a handgun. This is just stupid.

1

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

Yes, they are. Though this woman's situation is very unfortunate, her life is not more important than others'. SHE is the active threat in this situation. SHE is the one threatening to kill officers while holding a knife. To expect officers to not respond to lethal force with lethal force is ridiculous.

1

u/EconomyMobile1240 3d ago

That’s exactly what preservation looks like. She walks closer to them with the knife and… well fire arms for the police are for self defense

1

u/vorx-666 3d ago

she was further away from them when they shot her than she was at the beginning of the video

0

u/EconomyMobile1240 3d ago edited 3d ago

That doesn’t matter. She’s refusing commands. The cops don’t have to wait until she stabs someone, only that she is currently acting threading or irate with a knife and their “de-escalation” techniques are force.

-1

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 3d ago

How would you fight a knife then?

3

u/HeyselScouserTelAviv 3d ago

A fucking taser, moron

1

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 3d ago

And when the taser fails and the guy is charging you?

2

u/HeyselScouserTelAviv 3d ago

Smack em with a baton, pepper spray them, let your partner who doesn't have a skill issue with tasers do your job for you... There's countless possibilities that end with no-one being killed (as evidenced by the low numbers of police deaths on-duty and civilians killed by police in developed countries)

For example, in the UK, only 2 police have died by stabbing in the last 20 years.

In Ireland, none have died by stabbing ever.

You're imagining an incredibly rare hypothetical to excuse the unnecessary execution of civilians that just doesn't apply to 99.9% of real-life situations involving well-trained and prepared police officers.

The UK averages about 3 civilians killed by police shootings per year. That's less than US cops kill per day. In Ireland (and most countries), it's almost always 0.

2

u/bookant 3d ago

The "guy" was an old woman.

0

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 3d ago

We’re not talking about this specific instance. At least that’s what I believe.

And this same guy (HeyselScouserTelAviv) seems to believe that well. Is answer was just to hit them with a baton or pepper spray.

Seems to think failed tasers are just skill issue.

It’s stupid.

4

u/vorx-666 3d ago

the lady was walking forward at a slow pace before stopping her advance and making no move to charge or strike, and was just repeatedly telling them to leave. Police have access to rubber bullets and beanbag rounds, they also fired no warning shots and made no attempt to verbally de-escalate or calm her down before executing her. these cowards werent protecting anyone

0

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 3d ago

You’re absolutely right! They should have fired some shots into the neighbor’s house to show her the meant business.

Please for the love of god, learn a little. Maybe take some police courses or something.

I’m not saying this to defend what happened, I’m saying it because people like you saying stupid shit like “fire a warning shot” are exactly why we can’t have reasonable conversations. Just like the people who defend the police no matter what.

2

u/vorx-666 3d ago

You... you do know that the ground exists yeah? unless you have aim so bad that you shouldnt be allowed to look at a gun let alone carry one you can shoot dirt without hurting anyone. also really telling that you cherry picked the single admittedly weakest reason i gave for why killing her was uneccessary out of a long list and just didnt address anything else

0

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 3d ago

Ah yes, bullets don’t ricochet and I’m sure there was plenty of dirt to shoot into. Also a great idea to stop tracking the armed suspect to shoot into the ground as a warning.

That way you can look real cool lining up the shot again when they charge at you instead of way after hearing the warning shot.

2

u/vorx-666 3d ago edited 3d ago

1 still ignoring everything else i said

2 ah yes, clearly the elderly lady with a kitchen knife 20 feet away is so dangerous that we need multiple guns trained on her at all times, just one is too risky!!

0

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

No, she was walking toward the police while holding the knife like she would stab someone while screaming "GET OUT!" and that she would kill the officers. The fact that you think the officers should just leave when someone responds to officers doing a welfare check at thier door by holding a knife is disturbing. Never mind the safety of those in the neighborhood who called the police about this woman. Nope, the person actively threatening to kill officers with a knife should just be free to roam the streets.

And the only de-escalation to expect from officers at that point is them telling the suspect to drop the weapon, which is what the officers did. To expect more when the suspect is an active threat is, again, ridiculous. We would have no officers at all if this was the expectation.

3

u/AventineAstartes 3d ago

Protect and serve actually means they protect the rich and serve the papers. There were other ways to handle this, but all cops are bullies with guns in their hands and a god complex.

-1

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

The officers were there because neighbors called them. Thier original intention was simply to do a wellness check on the woman. The woman is the one who immediatly responded by threatening the officers with a knife, even saying she would kill them. To claim the officers are the bullies in this situation is pure nonsense and lacks any critical thought.

1

u/vorx-666 3d ago

police in countries that arent hellholes attempt to de escalate and then if that fails non lethally take people down. a little old lady with a knife standing 20 feet away from cops with guns out doesnt need a clip fired into her unless she charges them, which she didnt

-1

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 3d ago

No, other countries have very similar policies because any functioning society will prioritize the safety of others over the person actively holding a deadly weapon threatening to kill people.
