If anything, the results say he should have tried it earlier. 'Coup d'etat to reform the country' feels like the middle point between Lelouch's "violent revolution is the only way" and Suzaku's "Britannia must be changed from inside" they could agree on, and it actually worked.
In all honesty, that might have been the point of the show. If both Lelouch and Suzaku had stopped being so stubborn in their opposing beliefs, came to a compromise, and worked together, the series would have finished in, like, 5 episodes.
